The FF-2 team realizes that many of you may not be acquainted with us, so we decided to do this month's introduction post!.
We are posting this a little early just so that people have time to see it in the middle of various other hi-jinx going on. You still start playing on April 1st, but really it's close enough now that if you don't read this post thoroughly and start early, we won't dock you <del>anything</del> much ;).
My name is Maria, and the rest of my friends will introduce you to this month's challenges and plays!</div>
<div style ="min-height: 74px; border: solid 2px black; background: #111344; width: 450px; padding: 2px; color: Rose;" ><div style ="float: right; padding: 3px;"><img src="http://www.eyesonff.com/ff2/images/2-lionheart-f.gif"/></div> <quote>I hope being your brother I'm more than just a . . . "friend".</quote>
<p>Here are some tasks you may find "challenging" or merely "daunting" as the case may be~<br/>

<div style ="min-height: 74px; border: solid 2px black; background: #3d3600; width: 450px; padding: 2px; color: #ffffdd;" ><div style ="float: left; padding: 3px;"><img src="http://www.eyesonff.com/ff2/images/2-guy-f.gif"/></div> <quote>Um, I don't know if he wanted to be introduced, but that was Lionheart just then. . I call him Lionhe for short. . My name is Guy! I really love animals, and if you have any questions at all about the animals in this game, I would do my best to answer them!
Oh sorry, I'm not supposed to talk about that I guess. . What I will talk about then is how long you have to play and how you're expected to behave while playing!
The Eyes On Forum Staff would like to remind all participants that April 30th is the last day to submit screenshots of your completed game. April 1st is the first day to submit screenshots for your starting lineup (This isn't a fool!). They like to make you guys play these on short months to make sure you get your hineys in gear and so they don't have to worry about these events for an extra day.
They would like to ask that you don't immediately just jump to cheating. We don't mind if you go after some of these goals by using certain well-known bugs in this game as long as you tell us before hand, but you can't expect to be as well rewarded. Just be honest! Also if you use an emulator and run it at turbo speed, don't take advantage of that to try and be the first to the finish.
Also, remember that our fora are a great place to get information about games! Ask here before you go to gamefaqs, or even look at the frontsite! (Or DJZen's site :))
Now Frioniel has something he wants to say as well, and you probably should listen. (Him I call Frioni)</quote></div>

<ol><li>When you begin the game, please post a digital camera picture or a screenshot in this thread of your game that has your party clearly visible on the screen. You MUST do this to be eligible for participation in the Challenges.</li>
<li>You must also post a picture from the END of the game in this thread with your same party being displayed.</li>
<li>You CAN play the game on an emulator, and you CAN give us a screenshot of that. Just recall that Eyes on Final Fantasy does not condone the discussion of ROMs on its message boards. </li>
<li>There is no fourth rule.</li>
<li>Different challenges will be higher rated on different platforms because of inherent difficulty, a detailed chart will be posted later.</li></ol><small><small><small style ="color: #402200;">I swear I don't have a crush on Maria. . .</small></small></small></p></quote></div>

YES!!, I'm very excited to play this game. However, I'm left with a few questions.
1. Will the challenges be divided under Gold/Silver stars like in EoP-FF1?
2. Does maxed weapons and magic also mean max in every weapon and spell type?
3. How can you get all stats maxed when all play styles reduce at least one stat?
I clearly haven't played FF2 so some questions may sound dumb. BTW, I want to go for an emulated NES run with a translation patch (Neo Demiforce v1.1 to be exact). Is that allowed?
rubah
03-29-2008, 07:17 PM
Max stats refers to HP and MP, sorry!
Yes there will be silver/gold distinctions but they need to be decided first.
we'll also work out what max weapons/magic means. Probably it'll be like 1/4 of both to level 16 or something not ridiculous.
You can use a rom if you want; most people did/probably will

Damn your chrono, you're going to usurp my claim as main FF2 head around nyar.
Anywaysum, I'm a slightly sociopathic sort. Ergo I'm going to be playing the original NES version. I'll also be subjecting myself to the following challenges;
No Physical attacks
Last character slot only (with three characters, this is Guy)
Starting stats/basic equipment (whatever is found in the first town. You can go Knuckles for your weapon.)
I don't know if I'll be the quickest (I've got time off soon though), the quirkiest (if Rantzien's playing he wins by default) or if I have the best character names (hint; it's a grid-based system). I'll leave that up to the judges.
Well, I'm off to get my butt handed to me. Chow!

I'm not sure what you mean by this xD Can you or can't you use them in what context?
*adds a no-item challenge*
Certain items, such as the Mage staff, can be used to cast spells in battle much like the HEAL helm in FF1. I'm asking can you use these in the context of an "Initial Equipment" challenge? Also when you say "No Item" does that mean you can't learn spells since they too are items you use.
rubah
04-01-2008, 06:40 PM
Okay I figure I should put this up before too much longer:
"Classes" in ff2:
Paladin: Swords user with low level white magic (defined for this to be any white magic spell excluding ultima and holy and not levelled up past level 6)
White Mage: Back row white magic user. (Can equip any weapon, but can't be taken out of the back row, so you might as well not equip anything but a bow xD)
Black Mage: Back row black magic user. (Can equip any weapon, but can't be taken out of the back row, so you might as well not equip anything but a bow xD)
Red Mage: Low level black and white magic user, equips swords, bows, knives, and canes)
Monk: No weapons user (no shields either), low level white magic (no spells above level 5)
Berserker: dual axes at all times, no magic, can't equip items
Items, while equipped, do not count as equipment unless you're playing as a berserker for these challenges. Spellbooks won't count as items if you only use them to learn magic, that is, don't keep them in your inventory and use them as items in battle.

Alright, didn't really have time to play today, but meh...
http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/4341/97724269ea5.png
And so it has begun! Seeing as how I only played this game once and never really got into it, I decided not to do any excesive challenges. Also, this game features a hidden cameo in which I took part.
http://img253.imageshack.us/img253/842/69638123eb3.png
I felt in an inventive mood today, so I named my characters accordingly:
Frioniel -> Apple
Lionheart -> Pear
Maria -> Cherry
Guy -> Banana
Hear their names and tremble! Together, they form the allmighty Fruitbasket!! Nothing and noone can stand in their way...
http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/6758/24848929tt8.png

Yes there is. And I started it this morning! Pictures are coming later this evening.
Kishi doesn't like it because of the graphics but for once I'll go blatantly against him and declare that I love the PSP version's graphics just as much as I loved FFI's. If you've never played the game, it is THE version to go with. It's even got FMV's, and in a higher resolution than the PSX version's, at that.

You need a thing that's called Custom Firmware Expander. When you've got that, you hold screen+note and make screenshots in .bmp format that you can find in the Pictures folder in the root of your memcard (I think the CFE creates it.)
Make sure you update your firmware at least to 3.71 M33-4, and that you get the latest CFE, because the old one wouldn't let me take in-game shots. There should also be something able to make you take movies but I don't know much about that.
About the Star Wars names... I think the princess is Leila in Italian, while Ian/Han is probably my mistake. But well, if you really want to be picky it should have been Obi Wan, not just Obi. Even though, by the way he talks, pehaps I'd better have called him Yoda  if it weren't that Yoda is wise and not some sort of caveman.

Captain Maxx Power
04-04-2008, 06:22 PM
By the chest hair of Thor this is frustrating.
I had to do the same bit three times over because of glitches. The first time my party was messed up so the first battle crashed after Minwu left. The second was due to a mess up when I tried to reload the ROM after I realised I wasn't able to backtrack in time and my ROM save overwrote itself with an earlier version, and the third for the same reason as the first.
OK two things; firstly I will be using frameskipping to maintain my sanity. Unlike a standard game of FF2 I'm going to be doing a LOT of grinding out of necessity, and the standard speed of the game means it can take me an age to get it done. So to make sure I finish by the end of the month I'm going to be using frameskip primarily to zoom past long-winded fights. Secondly in regards to the equipment challenge again; can party members that join you use the equipment they have when they join or do they have to de-equip them and use the starter town stuff?

In the northern part of the map there should be a long straight of line that loops across the edge and connected the main land mass in a loop. Along that long narrow part you should find the Dreadnaught. Use the Pass item on the guy at the door and go from there.

I found out that I didn't name my characters mistakenly: in the originally dubbed Italian version, Han was really Ian and Leia was called Leila. But this time I gave them the original names, for the joy of all you Star Wars otaku. :P

Pff. I quickly grew dissatisfied with my savefile and I restarted the game. Meantime, can somebody expert give me some spoiler-free tips?
Absolutely.
- In most cases, weapons > magic. They don't cost MP, can usually kill any monster with one hit provided you have the latest weapon, and there's very few enemies that have very high defense
- If you don't want to fuss with offensive magic for a few select fights then have a few magic spell tomes in your inventory. Using them as items will cast a high-level variety of that spell
- When you find the Curse sword, KEEP IT! Don't sell it, even though it's hit^ sucks. It's uber-useful in Boss battles (see below)
- Give EVERYONE in your party Cure, Life and Teleport. Cure should be levelled up where possible, Life and Teleport don't level them only use them as you need them
- Keep an eye on your evasion. For front-line characters evasion > defense for the most part. You can equip things like the Cuirass-type armours, Thief Gloves, Black Garb etc to give yourself decent defense whilst retaining your evasion stat
- If you find a dungeon is too hard and you're low on HP/MP, Teleport out, Save, go to the nearest town, rest and try again. Most dungeons in FF2, due to the levelling system, can be attempted over and over until you managed to get through to the end
- If you need to powerlevel I suggest the following; For MP early on, just keep casting in a battle until all your MP is used up. Preferrably you'll want to cast a defensive spell so the enemy doesn't die. For HP/MP later in the game you can use the Swap/Change magic in the dungeons in Bafsk, which is the easiest dungeon to get to for low-level enemies which you can then "swap" with to get gains in both HP and MP. To level weapon skills, have someone with the Blink spell, higher levels are better. Get into a battle with something like a Flan (high defense, you can find Black variants around Mystidia), and cast Blink on them a few times. You can then get your characters to swing at them perpetually. Do so until you feel you've done enough. Remember you can only gain one level per battle, so don't go overboard thinking you can get 16 levels in one sitting. You can do the same thing with offensive magic spells by using the Shell magic repeatedly to raise the Magic Defense of a target.
- For the most part attempting to level-up the fourth member of your party is pointless. Minwu is nearly always stronger than your party, Josef is about even, and after that all of the temporary members are generally weak. Richard is probably the one most worth levelling since one of the dungeons you have to do with him is very difficult, and of course Leonheart since he's with you for the hardest dungeon in possibly all of FF2.
- If you're after all-out offense in boss battles, have someone cast Haste and then stack Berserk as much as possible. Whoever has the highest sword skill equip the Curse sword and have them attack until Curse is inflicted. Then switch it out for another weapon. The stacking of Berserk along with Curse will allow you to do massive amounts of damage to the point of being overkill.

yay, finally finished - healing staff on Maria and ribbons on the rest made the last battle disappointingly easy though :p Also, equipping 2 weapons per character seemed to make things go faster for me, so that's what I did most of the game (healing staff being the obvious exception) :p

Well I've endeavoured to pull myself away from the tribulations of WoW in order to try and get somewhere. It doesn't help I'm currently undergoing the hardest challenge possible (no physical attacks, initial equipment, last-character only AND the NES version to boot), so progress is super slow.

Our story picks up sometime after the Dreadnaught has laid some waste, and I've ventured into the frozen lands of the north. This constituted a few days worth of grinding Josef. Incidentally I really like Josef as a character because he's one of the few RPG characters with a noticeably receeded hairline. What will all these spikey blonde haircuts and long grey do's we forget the reality of baldness in a fair majority of men. Josef wears his mop, or lack thereof loud and proud. We salute you sir!

This is me getting to the other side of the ice-field, where I am now currently levelling TPW for the trip to Cashuon Castle. Thanks. I'm currently grinding Guy in order to make the trek over to Mystidia to pick up spells such as Holy (which is stronger than the basic elemental spells and doesn't lower Vitality due to being a White Magic spell) and Swap (essential for decent levelling). If my calculations are correct I'll need four of each spell; one for Guy, one for Gordon, one for Leila and one for Richard. Since as soon as I get the characters I need to start using them I need them to learn the spells ASAP. I'm dreading doing Leviathan since I can't remember if there's an Inn there which will make levelling Richard impossible and thusly I'll have to rely on item-based spells.

I am going to have to do some serious levelling to get even close to Mystidia. With no armour and little evasion I'm taking well in excess of 500 damage per hit per monster each round of battle (somewhere close to 1000 points of damage per turn). I'm going to need to uberlevel my HP and my Fire spell so I can dispatch them appropriately. Expect me to take some time...

Do you know that if you have maria in the back row and she has not gained hp since the beginning of the game, and you buy her fire and she casts it on herself, she will die? And then when Minh revives her the next round, she will cast it on herself again and die again. And then when minh revives her the next round, she will cast it on herself again and die again ad infinitum.
I'll post my screenshot of beginningness after a while(I forgot to make it of the character naming screen so I just got one of base stat window xD)
[edit- I did some equipment optimization. My party was set up like this: Frioniel- dual shields, handful of armor, Maria- bow no armor, Guy- axe+sword, the rest of the armor, Minh- cane, no armor.
I realized that guy's evasion was pathetic, thus he was the only one frioniel could hurt. I also realized that he had such pathetic evastion because of all the armors on him. Once i took those all off it was much higher xD I gave minh's copper armor (formerly on guy) to maria since it has a +5 mdef (see fire incident above) and she's not going to be evading any attacks in the back row anyways. I gave frioniel the sword and one of his shields, you can't live off of dual shields forever (but it is level 3 now I think xD) and Guy got the hat left, trading 2% evasion for 1 def point. I'm not sure if I like that deal or not, selling armors is a lot more lucrative (I'm kinda bitter because I had to pay 146 out of my 147 gold at the inn because minh ran out of mp xD)
Does anyone else notice a tendancy for the 4th and 3rd place characters to be hit much more often?

I keep forgetting to take pictures of my progress. I found the Mithril and purchased Mithril weapons and armour for everyone, the Dreadnaught is complete and now I'm on my way to see Hilda back at Altair. I guess this is where I will end up losing Mindu. I'm liking it so far. :cat:

Do you know that if you have maria in the back row and she has not gained hp since the beginning of the game, and you buy her fire and she casts it on herself, she will die? And then when Minh revives her the next round, she will cast it on herself again and die again. And then when minh revives her the next round, she will cast it on herself again and die again ad infinitum.
Just have Minwu revive her and leave her at that. If she was at full HP when the battle started and she is revived from dead, the game will count that as her losing almost all of her HP and more likely as not give you a HP increase. You don't need to whittle your characters down to single digit HP every time you want an increase, just a fair percentage (I tend to find anything below a 50% drop will almost guarantee an increase).

Deist Cavern was quite challenging, but I managed to get through it. Was not expecting this however:

I ran into a few of these double Hill Gigas' fights and they would just wear me down, I had to warp out after a while.
Beat the boss(es) down there, which was again quite hard. Went back to Altair for an erotic scene with Hilda and Jude and then, bang! lol wut.
Hilda is gone again, what the hell is going on? Gordon is back now and here is my team:

I didn't tell her to cast it but once, the first time before I knew she did 20dmg with fire xD :p That was the problem xD The game thought she hadn't cast it yet and had her finish the command over and over xD It was a huge waste of mp.

It's kinda interesting to try and play this for the first time without using the cancel/select bug on purpose xD (sometimes I'm just really indecisive about what actions to take xD) I realize now why spells are cast so late. Besides taking longer to prepare, this way you can avoid wasting all your mp if you cast a spell that doesn't get played until after the battle ends xD

I need to know this right this very second; You said that their is a "base equipment" challenge in which you can only buy the first set of armour/weapons from the first town. HOWEVER I need to know, for the sake of my current challenge if this includes temporary characters. Right now the next character I'll get, Gordon, will have significantly better equipment than was available from the starting town. Will I need to de-equip him of his better stuff and use the starting town stuff to still be in the running to complete that challenge?

When I do, which should be in about a week, I'll try to get as far as possible. Once again, sorry for all the delay.
BTW, up until now I've played this game without select-cancel bug, straying from the designated path and WITHOUT PUNCHING MY OWN TEAM MEMBERS IN THE FACE!! (I know, this is going to be a heck of a grind fest, but I'll try to lay off of it until I'm REALLY runnig out of time)

Heal is pretty important to level up if you don't want to be stuck carrying around three goldneedles in some of the later dungeons/towers. I have nightmares about an incident that happened to me shortly after I got richard. Haste and Berserk would probably be good to level up so you could cast them 4 at a time and have them all be effective. MP will level up faster when you get your spells to higher level and cast them. That's one reason I've been enjoying playing maria as a back-row magearcher, sometimes I just get her to take off backrow monsters with her magics so that the rest of the party can meet halfway in the middle of the group xD
The levelling system is so subtle it's impressive. You have to imagine that the map was designed like it was on purpose, to force you out of your path and give you chances to level up when venturing place to place. At least if you don't waste all your money on the airship and ferry between palm and poft. If only it didn't take up so much time xD I think it's a better situation than in ff1 though, because at least you CAN take initiative yourself and speed up the process.

Holy is great if you want to grind Soul for Cure whilst still causing damage. Osmose is also uber for later dungeons since it allows you to regain massive amounts of MP quickly. Also Esuna, Basuna, Aura, Wall, Barrier and Dispel need to be levelled to at least level 6 to be wholly effective. Berserk and Haste can make your physical attackers absolutely monsters. Blink levelled enough can make your party immune to physical attacks if you don't want to use Shields/don't have enough Agility.

You determine your entire party's actions at once since these games lacked the ATB introduced in ff4. In FF2-nes, if you cancel and reselect an option, your previous option is still credited towards the levelling system. If you waffle back and forth between trying to choose whether to blast the zombie with fire or cure, selecting, backtracking and reselecting, you'll be credited for casting both black and white magic, and your spell ranks in fire and cure both will increase by however many times they were selected. And your power stat will suffer greatly xD

I've hit a major snag. It's impossible to complete Kashuon Keep without using physical attacks. R. Soul, the Boss of the Keep, absorbs all of the elemental spells. I can't think of any way to kill him not using weapons. A glance at the properties for this monster shows it absorbs all magic in general.
So.................yeah, I may have to break the "no physical attacks" rule just to finish the game.

Well here's the thing; Our friend R. Soul has natural immunity to ALL of the elements in the game. These includes the hidden one's, such as immunity to Mind, Body, Dimensional etc. What that basically means is that the ONLY spells that will do damage to him are non-elemental, of which there are three; Ultima, Flare, Drain and Holy. Ultima I won't get due to the storyline until much later. Flare and Drain are under the same proposition. The only one I could possibly get is Holy, as I could trek down to Mystidia and buy a tome of it. However, my previous experiments with trying to get down there showed that I would have to be subsantially levelled before I could even think about it. To give you some context, I would take on average 500~600 points of damage per round of battle against the enemies in that direction. If you assume I'm using Fire of around level 6~7, without using Cure at any point I would need near to maxed out HP to survive. From a purely technical perspective, it's entirely possible for me to get past this battle whilst remaining in the bounds of the challenge. However the logistics behind doing that would be near impossible.

It's an NPC in the way so that won't fly. Also most people aren't using only one character who can't equip any items he finds or could possibly buy. ;)
I'll train up my Unarmed skill to Level 3 in normal battles if you'll permit me (attempting to take him down with Level 1 would be suicide), unless you have an abject issue with me levelling it?

After getting the Bell it was time to grind Guy so I didn't end up in the same situation as I did before with the post-Ice Cave where I got back to town by the seat of my pants. This is part way through my levelling session which resulted in about 1200 HP, 270 MP, Level 7 Fire and Level 8 Cure. After that it was time to move on.

...ah damn it! As I'm sure many of you have been discovering temporary party member's stats are grossly below much of your own party. In this sense, Gordon had even more grinding to do.
http://photos-393.ll.facebook.com/photos-ll-sf2p/v233/196/26/848150393/n848150393_2793672_6621.jpg
Chocobo! I don't know if anyone's posted any pics of them, or indeed even found where the forest is. It's directly south of Kashoun Castle, but there's no visual marker in the NES version meaning I had to wander around the forest until I bumped into it. These little fellahs are super useful for getting around the map quickly early on in the game without having to deal with loads of random encounters.
Now I am a great magician, your clothes are red!
http://photos-393.ll.facebook.com/photos-ll-sf2p/v233/196/26/848150393/n848150393_2793673_6818.jpg

Now here's me setting fire to a tortoise. I'm actually making heavy use of the Magic cane as an item since it's basically a free Bolt 5. I use Fire on powerful single enemies or anything resistant to Lightning.
http://photos-393.ll.facebook.com/photos-ll-sf2p/v233/196/26/848150393/n848150393_2793676_7414.jpg

And here's the little bleeder of contention, R. Soul. Hacking the game files reveals it's completely immune to all spells, so I forced to break the "no physical attacks" rule for this fight. I levelled up my Unarmed skill to Level 3 beforehand since I would have done single digit/zero damage with anything less, plus it meant I could still follow the "No Equipment" rule as well while I was at it. For the record I actually tend to go completely naked since I need as much Evasion as possible and armour reduces the potency of your spells, so the starting equipment is completely useless for my purposes.
http://photos-393.ll.facebook.com/photos-ll-sf2p/v233/196/26/848150393/n848150393_2793679_8051.jpg

So yeah, I've finally made some serious progress for once, but the hardest parts of the game are still to come. Leila is going to need yet more uber-levelling to get herself up to speed, which will be the next step on the road. Really this challenge is less challenging and more long-winded. I wouldn't have been able to do this in reasonable time were it not for the frame-skipping available to me. It doesn't help the NES version is also a lot harder in general, and everything takes an age to level-up. But still I'm determined to get there. My claim to #1 FF2 fan will be kept by golly!

OK lemme try and explain Aura; There are eight elements in FF2. Four are elemental (Fire, Ice, Lightning and Poison), whilst four are a bit odd (Dimensional, Mind, Body and Instant Death). Each enemy in the game has either a weakness or resistance to each of these, or perhaps they are indifferent. What Aura does is add an elemental unit to your physical attacks. If the enemy happens to be weak to that element then they will take extra damage. If not then nothing will happen to your damage output. The level of your Aura spell affects which types will be added. I don't know the exact order, but I do know once you reach Level 8 it will add all types of elemental attack. By the by, Barrier follows the same principal except it increases your defense, and Dispel again except it lowers the defense of the enemy to an element. I'm not sure what Wall does however...

Can anyone explain how raising evasion works in this game? From what I've heard before, having a high shield level is supposed to help- is evasion supposed to increase whenever you successfully dodge an attack? I've equipped my party members with two shields in the hopes it'll level up faster, but I haven't checked to see if this actually helps.

Hm, I got to Mysidia too, but I took Leila's ship. The enemies we did run into were a cakewalk, but only because they're physically beat-down-able. The cavern in "what I think is Deist but might not be because my directional sense sucks" kicked my party's ass over and over again because those stupid flans and mousses there are resistant to physical attacks, and my team hasn't trained any magic.
The number of evasions possible naturally increases like your base stat as you avoid attacks. Unlike stats it has a very low chance to increase per battle, something like 1 in 64. If you keep avoiding attacks during battles your evasion should go up. Magic evasion works in the same way, except it goes up for any kind of magic attack. An effective way of levelling it up early is to head far north of Phin until you reach the area where Wizards are. They hit you with magically attacks almost exclusively. Using this area I've managed to get my characters up to 8 or 9 magic evasion, covering them for most of the rest of the game.

Could that work for Green souls? They exclusively cast Cure IV on you and I'm trying to figure out a way to use them to level up some of my stats. I would also like to increase speed, how do i do that?

It's possible, but my gut instinct tells me Magic Def doesn't increase when you have beneficial spells cast on you. Also in regards to Agility it has a chance to increase whenever you successfully dodge an attack in battle. The more attacks you dodge the more often your Agility will go up. That's why it's worth having mages in the front row, otherwise their Agility goes down and they end up last in order which can be deadly if you're relying on them for healing.

Would you guys believe that gordon and guy have the most MP of anyone?
Other stats:
Frioniel has a shield equipped (diamond), his evasion is 2-73%. Guy also has a shield equipped (gold). His evasion is 3-38%. maria does not have a shield equipped and never has. She does have gold armor on (being in the back row). Her evasion is 1-00%. Gordon had a shield equipped for about two weapon levels and his evasion is 1-23%. The lesson learned? Always equip your shields when you can. And don't equip armor when you don't need it.

Captain Maxx Power

In this game, Evasion > Defense. However you can still get away with decent Defense whilst retaining your Evasion. Some of the least evasion reducing armours are as follows;
All Shields
Copper Cuirass
Silver Cuirass
Ruby Cuirass
Gold Cuirass
Diamond Cuirass
White/Black Robe
Power Vest
Black Garb*
Mythril Helm
Giant's Helm
Twist Headband
Gold Hairpin
Ribbon
Thief's Gloves*
Protection Ring
Power Armlet
Items tagged with * will actually increase your Evasion, provided your Agility hasn't capped at 99 yet. Everything else will only reduce your Evasion by 0~5%. Really you shouldn't have to use anything but the armours given above unless your Agility is already high enough to break the 99% cap whilst still equipping the heavier armours.

I've unlocked the Jade passage and cleaned it out of treasure and bosses. I went just far enough into Pandemonium to get a single treasure and unlock the collections data on it.
Looks like I have 9 treasure chests left to go. I think it's time I start stocking up on Elixirs (Ethers take up a large amount of inventory). I expect I'll need to do two more trips through Pandemonium.
Do you need to beat the game to get 100% on Items, Bestiary, and Art collections?
On another note, the Quicksave function is a lifesaver in this game. I can't imagine how frustrating it would be to play through the final dungeon without it.

Yknow this is how Dubya got into power. You may have noticed something odd about this picture. Yes, there are indeed two Gordons. It seems the programmers didn't have the foresight to replace the "active" party member sprite with another should one of your members leave the party to walk about. This happens a lot since I tend to have only the last member slot active. So now Gordon has left us (the deserting bugger), we're off to sail the seven seas to save a serpent or something similar.

Pirates! Like many things in the world, it turns out they're weak to fire. As it happens Square got it wrong here, as Pirate are immune to fire. And any other element. Infact, if this was realistic the party should've lost automatically.
http://photos-f.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v233/196/26/848150393/n848150393_2847157_9004.jpg

With Leila now in tow I spent a LONG time levelling her stats, namely her HP, in order to reach here; Mystidia. And look who inhabits this place. Red Mages....sort of. Well they're mages in red, but we all know they're just Black Mages whose clothes are at the laundromat. Still, Mystidia offers two very useful spells; Change, which is crucial for quick levelling, and Holy, which is the most powerful spell you can get at this point and allows you to grind Soul for a more potent Cure spell. Since it lowers Strength and I'm not using physical attacks it also has the benefit of leaving my Vitality stat intact, which would otherwise be ravaged by continued use of Black Magic spells.
So once I had the Change spell I could carry on using it just outside of Altae to get guaranteed HP and MP increases allowing me to reach the heady cap of...
http://photos-h.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v233/196/26/848150393/n848150393_2847159_9420.jpg
9B5 MP? Yes, for those who know you're computing, this is a case of a display overflow. B is the hexadecimal representation of the value 11. So what I have here is 1015 MP. That means the cap may be 1024, at which point an MP increase could cause my MP to roll back to 0, which wouldn't be a good thing. Ergo I can only level my characters using this method so far.
So anyway, time to find dragons.
http://photos-a.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v233/196/26/848150393/n848150393_2847160_9626.jpg
...I think that's a dragon. Kinda looks like Sloth from the Goonies. Wouldn't that be awesome though, if Sloth joined your party? He'd have a special spell that would play a digitised version of "HEY YOU GUYS!". Wickedcool.
Deist Cavern was an ARSE to get through. It took three attempts, not because it was particularly hard, but because my emulator has this annoying habit of loading the wrong save state by accident (I only ever use save states in places where I'd normally be able to save in the game i.e. the world map because the ROM takes an age to get past the title screen for some reason and it's quicker), so I ended up loading a save state before the dungeon was finished. Ergo I had to traverse it all over again. Thank goodness for the turbo button, otherwise I would have lost my rag.
http://photos-b.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v233/196/26/848150393/n848150393_2847161_9840.jpg

You'll notice my MP count in this battle. Yes, this dungeon was so hardcore, I used up over 800 MP just to get to the end. I have no idea how the later, decidedly longer and harder dungeons will go. Most likely I will have to stock up on Elixirs or get the Osmose spell to keep myself afloat.

O look, it's Kary from FF1. I had to revive my other party members because the game wouldn't let me advance without doing so, but I just ended up killing them off with Guy's own Fire spell. This was a close battle due to Layla getting Conf. all the time, which I presume means confragulated.

A piece of advice before you go, although it does contain spoilers:
You should save right outside the atoll and remove Leila's equipment.
I've scoured Pandemonium and managed to find another 8 treasure chests, so my item completion is now at 99% with one treasure to go. I've got four monsters to add to the bestiary (I assume one of them is the final boss), and about three concept sketches (again I assume one is of the final boss).

As is becoming par for the course with me, I've hit a major snag. I've tried to go to the Arena with Gordon but the game demands that one of the three main characters are revived to advance since Gordon leaves when you find Hilda. The problem is that Guy, who would be replacing Gordon, is severely under-levelled to get out of the Arena (you have to hoof it out as Exit doesn't work) and head back to the boat and all the way back to Altea. In all honesty I don't think it's overly feasible. I will try it by buying an Elixir to heal Guy back up to full health/magic when I revive him and take a bazillion Holy tomes to hopefully burn through the enemies with them, but if that doesn't work....I'm really not sure if I'll be able to advance.

In related news, I'm afraid to say that I won't be able to complete my challenge. I didn't have the foresight to level-up Guy for the Arena. To be fair I would have had to grind him A LOT in order to get to the end given that his evasion stat is 5% and he takes about 300 damage per enemy per turn. To survive an average encounter I'd need about 9000+ HP provided I didn't stop to heal. So I'm afraid I'm out of this game playthrough, which is very frustrating for me personally. But then again it's taken a long time for me to get even this far, and I don't know if I would have gotten through the whole of April. I may however put up some of the content from the PSP version in terms of the optional dungeons that I notice no one has mentioned yet.

I'll love you the most if I fiind out that you unequipped Ricard before letting him blast himself into oblivion. :D Thanks, Maxx! You're great as usual and thanks to you I can finish this challenge without having to spend a lot of money or fighting with PSP discussion boards, most of which are so messed up I cannot even make my way in them.
Yep, I didn't touch the bonus dungeons yet so please add stuff from them ;-), because I don't think I'll be in time. But if you just abandoned the challenge from now on and started using all the characters, whould you have a chance to finish the game? I think you showed the limits of FF II to humankind, and you deserve a recognizement for this even if you should not finish the game in time.

I must be overtrained to the max cause the bosses weren't that hard.

Yes, Ultima, now I can own everything. Oh wait it's on level 1 nevermind. Absolutely crap and pointless leveling system in this game.
Oh well, here's my team:

If it's any consolation Captain Maxx, I won't meet my goal either, mainly because it looks like I have to play through the game twice, and I don't have enough time left.
Sergeant Hartman, you are plenty overleveled. Your stats are higher than mine was in the final dungeon.

Maxx, can you send me a non-compressed shot of the returned Emperor speaking? I want to make a forum avatar out of it.

My spells are all around 5/6/7, and I can finish the game like that. Why the hell do they need to go up to level 16?

Need... to... finish... in time...
Edit: How do I defeat Death Riders? Seems to me that no matter what I do, every single time I meet them it's sure death for my party.

I know it's not on topic and of course I know there are only two days left in the month, but feel free to just start now and finish in May sometime (or later). :)

Maybe more leveling? I've got my party so that two characters can do enough physical damage to take out one Death Rider. So long as I only run into two or less I can beat them easily enough.

Pandemonium.

I'll be starting there tonight. Yay! :)
I'm not sure if I'm levelled up enough, but I have no time for that so I'll have to try with what I've got.

If all of your characters' HP is over 1000, you should be able to manage going through Pandemonium. Defeating the Emperor is a whole different story though (unless you use the Blood Sword).

My guys (and Maria) are all over 1000 HP and I use the Blood Sword almost all the time as the second weapon. We'll see if I make it through. :)

Something about a Blood Sword, you say? I'll try that when I get home because the Emperor is decimating my party.

The Blood Sword gives you back some HP with each hit. Every little bit helps.
EDIT: All of my playing tonight was a waste. I got defeated by Lampias. I couldn't keep up with the healing and reviving so it doesn't look like I'll be finishing this tomorrow either.

Game beaten! And without the Blood Sword. The Emperor was no piece of cake, though. I'll upload images in the evening.

Bwarhar. I beat that fool using the Blood Sword but I'd say I probably could've done it without it. I've been in the habit of buffing my guys with "All" type spells instead of using them on one person at a time. I used Berserk, Aura, and Haste on Fryin' and that seemed to make a crap-ton of difference. I didn't get a pic of him dying but I got the dialogue afterward. Yay!

Is there any short cut to Pandemonium or is the Jade Passage the only way in?

As long as the challenge is only for the completion of game, I believe it is okay to keep going into May.

Oh come on, I barely could do that, and with no bonus dungeons at all, too, without attempting to beat the NES version with an impossible setup like you did.

You'll always have an honorary crown from me Maxx. The way you played was nigh impossible and very impressive. I don't have the patience for what you did in that game.

Overtime info:
Finally found Iron Giant in Pandemonium. Went looking in the wrong room. I thought he was in the hidden room with the Masamune chest, but he's encountered in the next room west with the pillar. The funny thing is, he kept running away from my overleveled party! I finally managed to pin one down long enough to add completion data. :D
Currently I have 98% Bestiary, 100% Items, and 98% Artwork.
I still need Mantis King (#88) and Goblin Prince (#98). I looked around the woods and ocean around Kas'ion, but no luck so far. Should I be looking inside the castle?
Also does anyone know where the Mantis King lurks? They're not the strongest in the Mantis class, so I suspect they're from an earlier dungeon or maybe on the world map somewhere.

The Eoff FF II bestiary (http://www.eyesonff.com/ff2/bestiary.php) should be able to hel you.
