After spending a large portion of time editing Diablo II and other games, I've been considering simply creating my own (due to the limitations of these old, tired games being quite apparent now that I've delved into the files).

I would like to create a game that uses the classic hack n slash formula of such games as Gauntlet, Diablo, and others along this vein.

Does anyone happen to know of any such game creation engines?

XNA Game Studio is the only thing I know about. It's free and apparently very robust, with a large support base. It's a Microsoft product, and essentially games created on it can be played on both Windows and the 360. Check 'er out here: http://creators.xna.com/Education/GettingStarted.aspx

Only thing is that I don't think it's too easy to share games you've created outside of the 'Creator's Club', unless your game is awesome enough to actually sell. Like The Dishwasher (http://www.gamevideos.com/video/id/17636).

Yeah, start learning some C# and XNA.
