Are any of you like me and see a topic with about ten pages of posts and do a mental-sigh at the amount of effort it would take to catch up with what is going on? Do you have any tactics to deal with these monstrosities of banal commentary?

Yeah, most opinions I see here are really of no value. Skip to the good parts, and those who have a certain credibility with me and can keep my interest long enough for me to care.

I only read the first and last couple of pages...If I miss something important, so be it.

I sigh, but I always read the whole thread through unless I am in a rush; if I'm in a rush I usually come back to the thread later and give it read when I'm not as busy. :jess:

I read the first two pages then skip to the last two pages, hoping people would have quoted anything important from the middle pages.:D
If the topic's REALLY interesting, I try to read the whole thing. But sometimes I just can't be bothered.

Set your posts-per-page to 500, then you only have one page to read instead of ten.

Depends on the subject. If it's EoEO talking about robot rights I'll read every post. If it's GenChat talking about weiner dogs I'll skim for anything amusing but otherwise read OP and the last couple of posts.

Actually, this is valid advice. Personally, I prefer to keep my posts-per-age at 100 because I prefer scrolling to clicking. Plus it's easier to glance through and find the sigs/avatars of people whom I find witty/interesting. Not that I know anyone here yet, but I'm working on it.

Right now I'm a bit daunted by the speed at which everyone posts more than anything.

It can be a bit of gloomy face experience. But I usually do it without too much sighing. I think most people on the forum say interesting things, so it's usually fun in the end :jess: Although after I post I usually don't read anymore for fear someone has quoted me and pointed out how retarded I am (I like to hide from the facts!). And I will now whoosh my cape and never return to this thread either!

If it's mandatory for me to read it the most efficient things to do is to scan for people I like reading the posts of (milf, you, mine) or giant quote pyramids as they summarize the conversation.

I usually cba with threads over like 3 pages because everything that could be said has probably been said already. Other than that I already only read posts by people I care about most of the time as it is already, even if there are only 7 posts in a thread or whatever. Selective viewing ftw

I don't even read the thread, you can be guaranteed that the majority of it will be the same 3 people posting unfunny jokes back and forth.

In most cases, I'll scan through all the pages quickly because I'm a really fast reader. If something really interests me in a thread, I'll go back and read it again to make sure I didn't miss anything.
