View Full Version : yaoi overload

(I hope this thread is suitable :p )

Now I'm all for a bit of cute boy-on-boy action, but the fact that any two male characters in a game have to get a huge yaoi fandom is starting to bug me a little. I can't browse icon communities without seeing Sora x Riku or Axel and someone or whoever it is now. I joined Ouendan communities and checked out some of the fanart - so much of it is to do with the agents being gay or something.

And there's Phoenix Wright of course... it just seems every game with two or more male characters gets this, and maybe it's just me but it's ruining my innocent view of the game ;_; And it's not like I seek it out, people are making loads of icons and fanart and fanfics about them in any community about the game.

As I said, not that I'm against it, and it's kinda cute, but it keeps making me look at the game differently and feel all weird, cos its a GAME and it's suddenly making it more adultlike XD ... why must all male characters be subjected to this?? Why not more cute stuff of the real couple like Sora and Kairi? :(

Thoughts?

Whatever satisfies the fans, I suppose. Yaoi's not my thing, but that's not to say that no one else can like it. :D

I don't think it's any more prevalent than other cases of shipping, such as Auron and Lulu or Rikku / Gipal to name a few. It's just a bit more noticeable because it is "homo".

Harry Potter fans even have mixed species shipping like Buckbeak and Sirius ;)

I don't like most unofficial shippings, be they male x female, male x male, or female x female. I think it has more to do about fans shipping characters that have absolutely nothing in common and lusting about the pairings than the fact it's an homosexual (or heterosexual) pairing.

That or I don't like that these fans need to over-sexualize every relationship. What happened to people being just friends (or rivals) without wanting to get into the other person's pants? :(

I agree, but I would say that there is a fair amount of people who place people in relationships without them being too sexual. I think there's a view that they're predominately sexual, but there is a fair amount of non-sexual stuff out there if you look for it.

That stuff is pretty lame.

That said, I once used a MarthxRoy sig and avy on a Smash Bros. forum.

No you see, thats a bad thing. Because they will still be gay, making it just plain disturbing.

Sasuke x Itachi anyone?

Trust me on this, being family will NOT help the situation any.

Ouch!

I think the point was that he was talking about characters who were already brothers and complaining that people extrapolate sibling love and devotion into romantic entanglements.

Harry Potter fans aren't real people. They'll ship Harry/Whomping Willow if they feel like it.*

No, really though, I used to slash characters left and right. Not usually in video games, but I think I still have cloud/sephiroth and aeris/tifa as LJ interests (I really must fix that). Part of it has to do with having fun looking for subtext. Actually, most of it did. Though a part of it also has to do with sexualising the characters, yes.

I've mostly grown out of that phase, but I'll still look twice at two people who seem to be filling the air with UST no matter the sex of either of the characters.

*I have seen a Harry/WW fanfic (though I didn't read it due to fear), and I'm a huge Harry Potter fan, so the mockery here was said in jest.

HOMO JANAI~
I love yaoi, but only cute yaoi pairings. Like for instance in FF, SquallxCloud, SquallxSeifer TidusxAuron are hot. There are some that scare me like pairings such as SquallxCid, ZidanexAmarant, SteinerxVivi. xD

But yeah, when I'm playing games or watching anime I've built a certain radar to snoop around the relationship between guys. I also read too much on their gestures when guys interact in the game OHOHOHO! Is this bad? :(

I'd agree.

For the most part I prefer original pairings that derive from visual novel style games and manga. Though I do on occasion enough reading DJs with slashes of my favourite characters. I think a part of it has to do with fantastical projections. Sometimes there is some basis for it and it is just exaggerated. Though there are some that I just wonder where the hell do they come from. It is also interesting, this happens in manga from time to time, when the author will make their own DJ and partner up the characters. Maki Murakami is famous for doing this with her Gravitation series. Though from what I understand they are basically all hardcore sex.

Not all of it is just sex, you can find a lot of cute stuff too that is very softcore.

What puzzles me is Sora and Roxas pairings, cuz in the end isn't it he just doing himself?

Erm, no. Most yaoi is all the same anyway. I think it's because after the yaoi comics craze in Japan with the whole culture for Japanese women connected to that, there's stopped being so many mainstream comics where yaoi is canon (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on this point), so the fans are reflecting it onto other stuff. In my opinion, it's just a popular form of fanstuff, but generally worse than other fanstuff. I do find it annoying when canon is disregarded completely, but you're not being forced to look at anything (MILF's Grindeldore situation notwithstanding) so it's not really a big deal for me.

And then you just get people like Frodo and Sam, who are totally doing it anyway.

Yeah that's kinda my main thing with it really xD

Well apparently there's a big thing with those two main guys. I don't know their names. Here's one:
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a3/lolerskate/icons/PhoenixandMilesforcryingoutloudYGal.jpg
Phoenix and Miles apparently :p
I saw loads of icons on a kingdom hearts icon journal (where I also see lots of sora/roxas riku/whoever pairings).

And I noticed the fanart drawn on an Ouendan community I joined was primarily just yaoi too.

Actually, cute yaoi doesn't bother me so much it is kinda cute sometimes. But I'd like it more if they were a real couple in the game. I know you can make up whatever you want with those characters but... people who actually think they were secretly in love or something. (sorry Aicha, I dont know if they are XD )

And like the icon above some of it's pretty sexual and naked which I suppose bothered me more. It's a GAMEE. They should not be naked. It's a game that could be for any age! It's not like I looked for it I suppose I just have to accept if I belong to these communities for fans of the games I'll also come across it.

I really don't mind it even existing, each to their own, but I personally would like to keep my innocent view of game characters, with the relationships they are intended to have. :p

Don't get me wrong, I like porn, but I like to keep it separate from my games!

Aicha is my wife

There's an overabundance of everything on the internet, pairings included.

I think the pairings are cute. I'd gamble that most don't actually believe they're plausible. Fluffy pictures of Seifer and Squall make me go "aww", but it's not like I truly think they harbor secret love for each other. Sora and Riku have a rival big brother and little brother relationship, but pictures of them fucking each other like crazy coconuts are still cute to me. That doesn't mean I actually believe they do that in their freetime.

That's why it's fan made. It's no different than all the other fan made crap that's never gonna happen. Male slayers in the Buffyverse. Voldemort and Harry becoming BFF. Auron getting plugged into the FFVII universe. Hanson and the Jonas Brothers getting into gangsta fights. It's all the same ridiculous fanwank.

It's going to happen with anything popular. It probably happens because a lot of girls and fags think it's adorable, and there aren't really alternatives. There's an authentic gay character in games about once every 100 years, and they're usually token. Just like how guys thinks lesbians are hot, so slash hentai is created. It's the same thing as cartoon porn with random, original characters, just people have a previous connection with established characters so it's spicier.

There are people who like it, and those that don't, and I get both sides. It can be taken too seriously on both sides, as I don't see it as something that merits passionate attention. I fit into the middle where I like it but recognize it isn't gonna happen. Most are probably in there with me. At least, I hope so

Kids found a new way to say "I hate you dad" to themselves and under their breath. Art is so expressive, its gay. (pun totally vindicates word use.)

Really, I don't mind, because I have eyelids.

Like the first thing I get when I do an image search for "Phoenix Wright" is a picture of a threeway with Gant, Edgeworth, and Phoenix. If I search for "Phoenix Wright Miles Edgeworth" I get a ton of pictures of Phoenix and Edgeworth gazing into each others' eyes. :P It's not hard to find.
