No thread yet? How strange.

Very well then, it begins now. 21 days to release and things are really, really starting to hot up. I give you this Kotaku article to whet your appetites: Holy Lord (http://kotaku.com/376220/hands-on-with-gta-multiplayer-city-of-chaos).

Highlights: GTA IV has multiplayer that does not require PC mods to play. GTA IV has original multiplayer modes that don't seem gimmicky. GTA IV has multiplayer modes which capitalize on the open-world environment, rather than trying to shoehorn some sort of uninspiring race mode into the game where your cars can't even be damaged or some sort.

I already expected GTA IV to be incredible. Everything up to this point looks amazing, and I've been anticipating it for months. Now, however, the multiplayer is just... whoa. Whoa. Whoa like foa.

ITT: Gush about GTA IV, anecdotes about how it's likely to ruin your life, laugh at Joel, and I guess throw in some discussion about the series as a whole.

I've enjoyed all of the GTAs. I won't be able to get anywhere near the 360 when my brother buys it. :(

I must build a new computer. This one can barely handle the graphical mastery of EoFF.

I am completely stoked, though at the same time I get the feeling they are going to sacrifice physics and model agility for graphics. Then I realize I dont care, because I am going to be mugging old ladies and not tipping their daughters when I get a health boost in the back seat.

The multiplayer is just inspirational. We had a ring going on with some sweet death match modules we whipped up, and it would be fun if GTA: SA wasn't such a latency whore.

Really? O_o it's seemed to me like they're doing the opposite. They're going all out on detail and physics, which is why the graphics, though great, aren't quite the best the system has ever seen.

Highly excited to finally have ragdoll physics :D

I am quite jittery for this game. Though I'm all in it for the single campaign. Multiplayer sounds nice, but I doubt I'll fuss with it much. I don't like deathmatches, and being on a team makes me paranoid I'm the Latoya Jackson and everyone else is Janet. But for those who dig that kind of thing, it's going to be bliss.

I haven't played a GTA game since III. I'm sure I'll wet my pants at what a huge jump this game will feel like to me since I skipped all the in betweens.

Oh God, I was already worried that this game would screw me over since it's coming out right before my finals. I was telling myself, "I'll just not open it 'til I'm done with tests." If all this hype is legit, I don't think I'll be able to resist the temptation of cracking open the box.

Highly excited to finally have ragdoll physics :DI was playing Saints Row today and my god that was awesome with the rag doll physics. GTA with that kind of physics is just going to be fan fucking tastic.

16 player free roam multiplayer. GTA is my new god. IT WAS ALREADY MY GOD. ARGH.

I was playing Saints Row today and my god that was awesome with the rag doll physics. GTA with that kind of physics is just going to be fan smurfing tastic.

I was doing the same! Those insurance fraud missions are fun. But the game needs more high places to throw people from. Hopefully this will be the case in GTA IV!

Apparently it's going to have random people in the street coming up to you and asking you to do stuff for them like in Bully.

Also I heard that you can take photos of random people, get into a cop car and look them up using the police computer or something, and get a list of crimes. Dunno how true that is, 'cause it sounds a bit out there, but apparently it's important for finding out about a target in a mission, so who knows.

I originally bought the 360 for GTA 4 (and the fact that there were no games I wanted for the ps3)

then they post-poned it until around now

I was angry

Now that it's almost out though I'm getting pretty giddy, I'm taking the day off of work when It comes out, and I already have my pre-order set

to say the least.... I'm excited

I wasn't particularly eager to get the game beforehand (though I was going to get it), but after seeing that article and a few others I am definitely looking forward to it.

In fact, it convinced me to go out and purchase my 3rd Xbox 360 last night, since that's the version I want it for.

I'll say now, I have hated every GTA to date. I never played the PSP one, or vice city stories, but they looked just as horrible as Grand Theft Auto 3.

Yet will all the things they are adding into IV I've been reading and hearing about, I think my hatred of GTA may change, as I really seem to want this game.

Loony BoB
04-17-2008, 11:18 AM
I might get it, but I don't think it supports local multiplayer (ie, two controllers on the same Xbox 360) so I probably won't get to do much multiplayer online as it would end up with Danielle and I fighting over the controller. :p

So if the review is correct in that the only real advance on the other GTAs is the multiplayer stuff and Danielle and I can't both play at the same time, then it's not much of an advance for me. Still, here's hoping there is eventually a Windows release so we can both hitch on that way.

Spuuky

The other advance is that it is MASSIVE. Plus pedestrians are meaningful.

Loony BoB
04-17-2008, 12:44 PM
From what I understand, based on the GTA IV review by FHM since they got a play-through themselves, it's not as large as the likes of GTA San Andreas.

Cz
04-17-2008, 02:24 PM
It's not as large in terms of sheer space, but that's because much of SA's map was empty countryside in which very little happened. The urbanised area of GTAIV looks to be about as large as the three cities of San Andreas combined, and you just know that every street of it is going to be packed with stuff to do.

Besides, the big advances are in the new physics engine and the revised combat system. That's more important than multiplayer to me, but I think I'm in the minority.:p

Ricky Gervais's stand up stuff is brilliant. I can't wait to go and see him in game. I'm definitely going to shoot him in the crotch once he's finished, though.

Also registration for Rockstar Social Club (https://socialclub.rockstargames.com/) is now open. (only works in IE at the moment) It's basically a stat tracking service, like bungie.net for Halo 3.

IGN: Grand Theft Auto IV Preview (http://uk.xbox360.ign.com/articles/868/868607p1.html)

IGN's got some info on multiplayer modes not mentioned in the OP so yeah take a look. Turf War is the one that appeals to me most, I guess.

Also the game has now been leaked so gameplay videos are online. Time to go watch while doing naughty things to myself in anticipation.

EDIT: Mmmm goodness. I love the way Niko leans when he turns when he runs. Dismounting from bikes into objects looks to be absolutely sick as well. The guy playing seemed to lose control and do 180 skids a lot though, but whether that was intentional or because they've made car handling more realistic I don't know.

You are hard as nailsDC Frank Carter does not play by the rules. He is a renegade. A loose cannon. One might call the fellow in question a maverick. But damnit, he gets results.

Just watching a stream of some guy play online. It was awesome. He was in this battle with some guy, then the cops show up. Our guy just nicks the cop car and drives off, leaving the other player in a gun battle with cops. He also just jumped off the Empire State Building.

What was the reason?

To me, a game that scores 100 should only ever be a game that you feel nothing can really be added to. This is why I prefer a 10/10 scoring system. If you're using a 100/100 scoring system, it should be made up of various 10/10 scoring systems for sound, graphics, gameplay, etc.

DK
04-28-2008, 06:09 PM
So far the game is pretty much living up to the hype for me. The banter between the cousins and the dialogue in the game in general is awesome. And there's such an amazing depth of :skull::skull::skull::skull: to do, before I even went out and about in LC I watched 10 minutes of the TV which is utterly hilarious. The cover system is great, the hand to hand combat is great, hell just going out and getting drunk with Roman is great.

The only thing I have a problem with so far is the driving, the handling of cars seems to be poor and they've done some stupid thing whereby the camera is no longer locked behind the car as you drive, so when you try and turn a corner the camera keeps looking ahead in the direction you were previously going. If they have long failridden race missions or car chases (which they always do) I can see it becoming a massive, massive pain in the arse. It's just not a good thing.

That aside, everything is great. I am going to get some food now and then after i'm done I will be playing all night http://img.photobucket.com/albums/1003/sickhappy/valid-1.gif

The reason was that the next GTAs (Vice City and San Andreas equivalents) might be even better. Which is silly because nothing ever deserves a score at all then. You can only review something based on the time you review it in, not the future.

Khumar you are a failbag and I hope that you get cancer of the controller.

04-28-2008, 06:41 PM
I for one already have a negative to it which is that it does not allow for splitscreen so both Danielle and I can play. So if they forgot about that aspect then there you go, a reason for at least -1 point! Danielle and I need to get a second Xbox 360 and TV someday. Or just wait for it to come out on PC...

DK
04-28-2008, 06:45 PM
Only GTA has never been a splitscreen game and doesn't need to start now. Multiplayer is only a nice bonus, but the game is essentially single player sandbox heaven. :monster:

Ah Suxley, it's not nice to throw around such terms when clearly the one without the hookups is the "failbag". Wallow in your own lack of GTAIV, Failmaster H.

Madame Adequate
04-28-2008, 06:45 PM
I also wanted splitscreen but to be completely honest I can't see myself marking it down on that account. Given what it seems to do technically, I just don't see how splitscreen would be possible without majorly compromising things. Given how much they've put into XBL multiplayer, I can forgive them for this.

Additionally:

A "10" is not a score we give out very often. In fact, the last time we gave a 10 to a console game was Soul Calibur in 1999. A 10 doesn't mean a game is perfect -- it means a game is pushing boundaries, expanding a genre, and doing many things to a level so far above and beyond its competitors that they overshadows any flaws. Certainly, GTA IV has some issues, the most noticeable being the occasional flaw in the cover system, but there are many more pieces of GTA IV that are better than anything I've seen from a game in the past decade. We don't give 10s often -- just to games that merit the score.

(sotto voce Suikoden II will still be better)

Psychotic
04-28-2008, 07:11 PM
Splitscreen would be ridiculous. Rendering one Liberty City is pushing it, let alone two. The only option would be what they had in San Andreas and while that was fun, playing against people online would lead to you being absolutely dicked.

Uh, I think that most people don't have it on account of it not being released until the 29th. Which is still 2 1/2 hours away. that seems to be the consensus among game critics and average joes who had copies from broken street dates, and of course pirates. Some even comment that it "impossibly exceeds expectations" but we'll have to see. In any case, tomorrow is going to be a remarkable day for gaming for many of us.

The only option would be what they had in San Andreas and while that was fun, playing against people online would lead to you being absolutely dicked.

I was thinking about that, I guess they could but they'd have to make a limit to how far the two of you could go. In SA the only limit (I think) was the boundaries of the minigame. Basically whoever's with you at your spot would have to be working with you at all times instead of splitting up.

Now I'm not saying there aren't any Khumars around who have ways of violating the street date - because there most emphatically are :mad2: - but most of us schlubs have little choice.
Im guessing that alot of people have downloaded the leaked version off the internet also.

Or the fact that New Zealand and Australia are in completely different timezones and get it before everyone else.

I was also about to jack some guy's car but after pulling him out, I backed off for some reason. I can't remember what it was. Anyway, the guy chases after me trying to batter me, so I ran down the street where I saw two cop cars. Stood right in front of them, and let him punch me. Four cops immediately pile out, guns pointed at the other guy. He surrenders, is forced into the back of one of the police cars and they drive off. Meanwhile I go back and take his car.

If you can find a helicopter, get near the Statue of Happiness(Liberty) and try to get it so you can eject onto the second story doors. There's a plaque that says "No Hidden Content Here" That's the door you need to go in. Then, climb the ladder and you can see a chained up heart, and it's still beating!

I did the same. Was Michelle pissed at Niko for getting drunk with you? Or was that just me?

Man, I'm glad I listened to the advice of mags and put subtitles on, because I would have even less of a clue about what Little Jacob is talking about without them.

I don't think Michelle was pissed at Niko, from what I could gather. I took her to another bar and again Niko got drunk as hell, again his reaction was great.

I did a stunt jump, and the Euphoria engine is very good, on the slow-mo I watched Niko's body react to the landing which was pretty good. Very good engine.

I also got in a cop car myself and checked out it's computer, that is so freaking neat. I couldn't find any record for Niko, yet that is. It's so cool that you can see where crimes are currently happening too.

My favourite Michelle related incident was when we came out of the caberet club after a date and I hailed a taxi and ran over and just as I was getting in the back seat she came running over after me and some dude just came steaming out of nowhere in his big car and ploughed right into her and sent her bouncing off down the street. It was hilarious.

Countryside. There's no space in the city to ever drive more than a few hundred yards without crashing
Longer health bar :(
Stealing parked cars was pretty cool the first few times, but now it's just annoying as it takes ages and you can guarantee every time someone will call the cops on you

Only real downside to this game so far is that the radio stations are crap. Talk stations seem to have like, 10 minutes worth of material before repeating themselves, and the music stations are all just bland, other than Vladivostok having a couple of decent tunes. Should never have gotten rid of the country station.

You suck balls, JNR, The Journey, Tuff Gang and Classics are all quality radio stations. Haven't even bothered giving any of the other stations a serious listen to because of those four. Probably ties with VC for me for best music in the series.

Also Hotwiring cars takes no time at all.

Nah, the radio stations in 3 were great, I happen to like the Scarface soundtrack, the pop music station was a good parody of such, and the rap station, while short, had some quality underground. Double Cleff made whatever you did cinematic, regardless.

I'm really feeling the music in this game as well. I'm surprised at how much I actually like Ukranian/east european music. The Reggeaton is actually bearable, I like Ven Bailalo alot, the contemporary and classic hip hop stations are both pretty good, some good stuff on older rock and R&B stations, I think LCHC was alright, too, gotta listen to that one more. The liberal and conservative talk stations are pretty funny, but there's a little too much filler on them if ya ask me. Outside of producing, does Lazlow actually appear on the radio?

Electro-Choc, JNR, The Journey, Liberty Rock Radio, Radio Broker, Vladivostok FM, and PLR are awesome. I am not terribly impressed with Integrity 2.0 though, and I've not given most of the channels any further listening. I think I like IF99, K109, and Tuff Gong as well.

Journey is okay. I hate reggae, jazz, funk, etc. I just want a decent rock station like V-Rock, K-DST or Radio X. Every single song was sing along fist pumping awesomeness. I just can't get into the stuff on Broker, LCHC and Liberty Rock. The songs on there are mostly bland and easily forgotten. The best rock song in the game that I've heard so far is Zhdat by Marakesh on Vladivostok and that says it all.

Blind firing is all kinds of awesome, as is ducking beneath cover as you can hear the metallic wham of bullets slamming into your cover. During one mission, after ditching my Bobcat because one of it's rear tires were blown and handling was atrocious, I was running down the middle of the street with a 3 star wanted level, and this cop car came roaring down the street and just as I was going to run to the sidewalk, the cop car swung around into a skid. The car impacted with Niko and killed him as it sent him flying.

During another mission I stole this Dodge Viper look-a-like while a guy was looking into the trunk, and once I took off the guy was holding on to the back of the car. He got thrown off during a high speed turn.

I also found a very nice car that's hidden. You can hear nitrous as you shift gears, and occasionally fire will shoot out of the exhaust. You must have the last island unlocked, Alderney I think it is. Go to the map, and zoom in on the top right hand corner. You will see a road that branches into 3; take the middle one as it ends with a large, run down house. Next to the house is a garage, go behind it and sort of hidden in the bushes is a Sultan RS.

Chaos. In a good, GTA kind of way. Anyway, I'm sure most of you XBOX peeps already have eachothers Live names, but I thought maybe we could post in here for those of us that play GTA multiplayer, although this thread has slowed a little and I have a feeling I'm going to be alone because:

Just beat the game, so don't highlight my spoilers unless you have too!

I spared Darko, but went after Dimitri. Apparently Roman dies instead of Kate if you deal with him instead. The difference between Darko and Dimitri was that Darko was nothing, just a stain. Dimitri, that fucker was still going around hurting people without regrets, he just had to go. Last mission was fucking cool with the motorbike jump onto the helicopter! Disappointed Packie wasn't with us though, I'd have thought he would have wanted revenge for his sister. Oh well.

As for the other kill choices, I iced Playboy. Mostly because Dan told me to, but eh, even if he hadn't I would've done so anyway, 'cause Niko seemed to like Dwayne. As for Francis vs Derrick, I went with killing Derrick. Francis was slime, but Derrick was going to rat him out. Snitches get stitches!

This game genuinely made me stop and think about my choices. It was incredibly powerful. I mean sure, the gameplay is world class, we all know that, but wow, the story was fantastic too, and I actually ended up caring about Niko and Roman.

I iced Playboy because he was a prick and I didn't want to kill someone who was going to become a friend to Niko because I was curious about what bonus he would give you, Francis because he annoyed the piss out of me and I also iced Darko just because I didn't like that he sold them out for $1000. Although I don't know what Niko is moaning about because he was wiping people out for less than that at the start of the game the big hypocrite! And then yeah I went for revenge as well. Was so happy when I found out Roman dies if you choose money because I love Roman and if he died I would have been mortified.

smurf man... I chose the money. I killed Darko because he sickened me and after all that work I couldn't bear to walk away, but later Roman was... very convincing when it came to the Dimitry matter. When he said "Killing Darko didn't help, did it?" or something like that, I went with the money, not revenge.

Roman died. Roman fucking died.

It's smurfed up. It's all smurfed up. I actually feel like :skull::skull::skull::skull: in real life right now. =/ I don't even know if I consider that a good thing or not. I mean yeah it's got emotions out of me, but they're not enjoyable ones.

smurf. FUCK! Why didn't I listen to that fucking Irish WHORE and get her killed? I don't even fucking like Kate!

Haha sucks to be you.

It's a lot of fun to do the co-op missions with three other people who aren't inbred retards! Also it's a lot of fun to make blockades in GTA Race. I came in last and still got more money than the guy who came in first.

Tell you one thing about the story that feels unfinished though. Bulgarin. I was expecting to take him down as the final boss when the game didn't end after taking down Dimitri. Pegorino is a pretty :skull::skull::skull::skull:ty final boss. Got nothin' on Catalina, Sonny and Tenpenny.

Hahaha, I'm so late in here.

I just got it today. Loving it so far. It's so fun and fast paced. The graphics and things like TV and dating at the bowling alley and crap is amazing, and I've only dipped my toes into this game, since it's all still kind of tutorial-ish.

The music is awesome. Fleetwood Mac at the bowling alley? Hell yes.

I see you guys already ended the game as well huh? I really don't have anything to say but the fact that I personally think that was the best GTA I've ever played. Although, a lot of people I know suggest that it was nowhere near as good as San Andras or however the hell you spell it. Anyway, great game. If anyone waits to play me in an online match, my PSN name is TypoonThaReapa. Forgot the H lol. Just send me a friend request and met me in the game so I can put a cap in whoever's ass.

I saw Sephex play this game this weekend and I played it some myself. The game is a lot smaller than every preview I had read made it out to be which makes me very happy.

I know the game is suppose to be more realistic but I wish the cars felt like the drove faster. I just wish more cars sped up faster like in GTA III. The taxi was a decently fast car in that game and ever game since has made me long for those taxis XD

Now that I have played it and have seen all the things I can do, it is a brand new era of torture for the citizenry XD

Top speeds are still very, very high, but I agree that it takes a long time to reach that point. When my friendn Barry got hold of an Infernus he tried to get it to top speed - and kept running out of road. I think I've seen the top speed of only three or four road vehicles.

I'm about 75% through this game. It's beautiful alright but when it comes down to it, it's really just more of the same.

Def the best story in a GTA game so far.

I'm really getting into the online mode. I played a game of Team Mafiya Work with three teams of five, and it was a real blast. Also, disturbingly enough, I'm actually enjoying racing...properly. I'm :skull::skull::skull::skull: at it, well, I'm okay as long as I avoid the huge collision that invariably occurs at the start, which I usually don't, but for some reason I'm really liking this. Funny, as the last racing game I owned was Gran Turismo 2 on the PS1.

There's something beautiful in being in a race, and having some mouthy American (although this adjective is probably unnecessary! You could probably guess that) prick leading the race and taunting everyone "DO YOU NEED HELP DRIVING, PURPLE?" etc. etc. and then turning one's car around, slamming him head on at the last bend and pinning him to the wall, and having him scream obscenities at you as everyone else drives past, laughing and honking.

I'm not sure if "You fucking fucker I'll fucking find you and fucking...KILL ALL OF YOU!" is as good as "PsychoticWalrus, I'm going to rape your mum!" but hey, nothing is.

I haven't played IV yet, but I'd imagine I'll end up the same way. I mean, when I beat SA, I didn't really have the same satisfaction as when I beat VC.

Anybody watch any TV in-game yet? I sat down and watched nearly 10 minutes of some cartoon about space marines last night while I was doing other stuff.

It was kind of lame, nothing compared to the radio stations, but I kept watching it to see how long it would go on. And it went on.

Just beat it, I think the game left something to be desired, it just made me think how over the top the missions got towards the end in San Andreas, and I really didn't feel it this time.

At first I was a little upset about my ending, but I much rather preferred it than the other one. Overall, I have to say they're both a little poor, I think they should've done alot better.

It's still a great game, I might go for 100% since I got not too much left.

I doubt it's going to be able to top Metal Gear Solid 4 or FFXIII, but I still feel it managed to surpass expectations.

Is it still possible to date Kate after Roman dies? I haven't decided on who I should kill off.

Psychotic
05-29-2008, 11:24 PM
I'm not sure because I didn't do that, but from what I've heard She's pissed off at you because you did the deal instead of sticking to your principles. Interestingly enough, people have dated Kate after she snuffs it. Apparently she's called them up as "Unknown Caller". I think you need to have asked her out on a date right before she dies or something but I could be wrong!

Kill her anyway. Roman is boss and his car service is very useful, especially because his driver is the only one who doesn't get scared when you do drivebys out of it.

On that note, it is a lot of fun to call up Dwayne's goons, and Roman's cab driver, and the four of you have an adventure where you drive the entire way across the map from Alderney to the airport with six stars. I've only managed to get to the bridge from Algonquin to Broker/Dukes. :( But it has been awesome every time.

The choice is easy. Kill Kate. Roman dying basically wrecked GTA IV for me and I can't bring myself to even play it again properly. All I do is stick in cheats and dick around on killing sprees.

I got the game recently and I just beat it yesterday.

I did both ending scenarios. After I saw the choice, I loaded my auto save file and made a back up and started it again. It sucks that there wasn't really a happy ending...or really much of an ending at all. It didn't feel like there was ultimate resolution this time around or like there was much of a bad guy. Dimitri was there here and there in the background but Catalina betrayed you at the start of III, Sonny was screwing you and taking a lot from you in Vice City, Samuel L Jackson was a pain to CJ from the start. I just felt like Dimitri was in the background for 3 missions and really didn't amount to a final boss or ultimate whatever.

Maybe in 360 downloadable content there will be a whole new set of missions where Bulgerian comes after you and your unresolved feud with him comes to a head and he gets more involved in screwing you over every which way. Maybe then more resolution would be felt XP

Now off to do extra stuff and run around and kill people online XD Free mode sounds insanely hilarious XD Check out this glitch XD
