Super Smash Bros. Brawl Tournament - Round 1

Okay, it's officially time for the...

EoFF Super Smash Bros. Brawl Tournament!

Since we had an odd number of people, the bracket is set up strangely. Zeldy sits the regular first round out and plays whoever wins between Elite Lord Sigma and Jowy. It's going to be single-elimination, just to keep things moving swiftly.

The Rules
Please contact your opponent ASAP via PM to schedule a time and date. All first-rounds should be finished and sent to me by Sunday, May 25th. In the event of special circumstances I'll be willing to extend this. For Zeldy's round, you will also be allowed a few extra days, but please still try to get these done quickly so we don't have to drag it out too long. Also, please PM me the time and date that you're playing once you've set it up.

Rounds are best two out of three. Each player needs to save a replay of the rounds they participate in. To save a replay, during the results screen, press "Z" on the gamecube controller (you'll have to look it up for the other controllers, I don't know those) to save it to your Wii or SD card. Then, send the replays to me. I'll be listing all the necessary friends codes and my Wii code later.

Matches are 2-minute time matches. Though I don't even know if you can change that during online play.

Players may choose the levels they play on, but some are explicitly disallowed. Items are also on, but again, with exceptions.

I love the stage too. It's just my wifi lags a lot, and it's a lot harder to avoid the lava if you can't see it until it hits you. Also I don't have L or R buttons, I use the remote with the nunchuk.

I think I want to leave Norfair banned. If it was just the regular lava flying around, I'd probably allow it, but the big lava wave/safe room hazard unbalances it too much. It's a fun level, though, I'll give you that :)

We haven't fought officially for the tournament yet. But we've fought a few times in the past. Our match is scheduled for friday, when we both aren't working... as I'm free more during weekdays, and him more during weekends, friday is our best match time wise.

Pokemon Trainer is a real mixed bag. I watched the replays and I still have no idea how Monol can pull off Ivysaur that well. Anytime I play with him, I just fumble around for a few seconds and swap him out for Charizard and Squirtle.
And I still don't know why you think Samus is so nerfed :p But I guess that's better left for discussion in the actual Brawl thread.

edit: Oh, and for everyone with an SD card, I can provide the regular replay files for download once I get them transferred over to my computer.

Just watched them... pretty good, but a bit painful to watch - looked like lag started to become a problem. When you got the smash ball twice in one round as Zelda I was freaking out though 'cause I knew it was over xD

If I send them you don't need an SD card, but you do need Brawl. It doesn't let you send replays unless you have both the Brawl FC and the Wii code.

Remember that if you send the same piece of data to several people at the same time, it takes up the same number of points as just sending it to one person.

I'm still not totally sure what the deal is with the points. afaik, they're just Brawl-specific. And yeah, they're free, they go back up to like 20 every day I think.. I guess it's just to keep bandwidth under control or something.

Actually, I don't think it's Brawl specific. Boom Blox also only allows a certain amount of data to be transferred each day, and it sounds like it's the same pool for all of your games.

Either way the tournament should be held a month after the European release of Brawl. That way them damn foreigners will have time to unlock all their characters and you know, actually play the game, so their American superiors can't kick their butts quite as baddly. :p

I wasn't sure if it was you or not, so I didn't save the replays.
Btw, I hate timed matches and do much better in stock. I don't watch the clock well enough to balance my percentage and damage and such to make sure I win. Stock is much easier to keep track of, as at the end of every match I had less percentage than you, and given another 30 seconds to a minute you'd have been killed again!

Actually, in friends matches you can set it to stock, it's only the random matches that you can't.

All you do is set your normal Multiplayer matches to STock, and then enter Wifi and create a room.

The default will be set to the same as on your Wii, and you can alter the number of Stock on the Wifi connection during Character Selection as you could normally.

I played a few stock rounds on the Wifi already.

Yeah, with friends you can go and click on the bar at the top just like in the normal multiplayer thing. The person in charge of the rules rotates, so you can't personally set it everytime.

i concur...there's nothing worse than being in a timed match, and you've beaten up the opponent who's sitting on about 300%, but the time runs out before you can KO them...and WAIT, if you HAD gotten that KO, you could have gone to a sudden death round to kill them, or even could have won straight up :eep: timed FTL!

in saying that, i really don't mind timed matches :p it's just in those situations that it gets me...

To lj/Evastio: Who won out of your matches? I don't need the replays necessarily, just the name of the winner.

Also, I need to rework the brackets. Stuff may be funky, but since Jowy dropped and I never heard from some of the other players, I have three people going into the next round. I might do a point system where everyone plays everyone and the kills or kill/death totals from all three determine who goes on into the final round, unless we get someone random who wants to join in. Though that'd be unfair to the people who played through the first round, admittedly.

Anyway, let me know what you guys think is best. I'd like to have it sorted out by the end of the day so we can get the next round started, but I want to hear from everyone also.

We could do.... stock matches. Each person plays the other two players twice. Kills are added together to determine the rankings. AKA, 3 stock matches, one person dies once, the other 3 times. That gives 1 person the 3 points for 3 kills, and the other only gets 1 point for 1 kill. That way no individual match will tie, and unless every match ends up 3-2 with each person winning matches, we'll have a winner.

I honestly don't care either way, the other two can play for the "title" if they want. I feel there really weren't enough people involved in this tournament, and if we can get a bunch more people, a doubles tournament would be more fun!

we'll have two tournaments
one for singles, and one for doubles. Singles first, then the doubles. I rather prefer doubles matches because then you have 4 people and things can get really crazy!

well this game comes out on a thursday here, and that's the second last day of school before two weeks holiday :exdee: would it be possible to have it within those two weeks? i know all of us PAL people would suck, but it'll just be more difficult to set up a match during school time (it's my last year [12] and i have a lot to do, next term is the busiest of the year :() if this can't happen it doesnt really matter, maybe two weeks after the release is too soon, but yeah, just puttin' that out there :p
