If FFVII were made into a LIVE ACTION film, would you like it? If so, what would your picks for the cast be?

No, not a good idea.

This has been a perennial topic on this forum.

I agree that it wouldn't be a good idea, mainly due to that stylized video games don't translate well into live action movies (Super Mario Brothers and Street Fighter come to mind). Also there's an utter lack of need, since AC was made and computer animation seems to suit the setting and story.

That being said it's a crying shame they didn't tap Denis Leary for the English dub of Cid in AC. He's done voice-over work before so I'm suprised nobody thought of it.

its not actually happening, its hypothetical.

after watching Sweeny Todd i think Johnny Depp could pull of Vincent.
And Jason Isacc's would be a good Sephiroth.

Re-read the original post. And anyway, it's not even a good idea for hypothetical discussion.

That's probably because we have more advanced technology than they did back then. Perhaps they can now better emulate the appearances of the fictional characters.

And they did make a Transformers movie, and it sold well. What's the difference?

No doubt but real actors are often distracting in a stylized setting. Animation works better because it's inheirently stylized.

Transformers was a toy line first, then animated series and movies, with video games as tie-ins. Not quite the same as a direct adaptation of a video game.

It's not impossible to do a live action adaptation of a video game; it's just hard to do it well.

Continuing with voice acting suggestions I think Ron Pearlman would be great for Rude; he's got a wonderfully laconic voice.

Wow some good suggestions by BG-57 and PeneloRatsbane in here, Dennis Leary as Cid would be great, I really didn't like the actor they gave him, trying to make him all cowboy and such.

But yeah, I don't really think we need one, for videogames I would much rather have CG, I don't know why, but as BG stated, and Rocco Lamponi said in the Godfather pt. II

"Difficult, but not impossible"

Here are my picks for the cast:

Hugh Jackman-Sephiroth
Michael Johns (American Idol 2008 finalist)-Cloud Strife
Carly Smithson (American Idol 2008 finalist)-Tifa Lockhart
Hayden Christensen-Vincent Valentine
Adam Gontier (Three Days Grace vocalist)-Zack Fair
Holly Brook (singer featured in Fort Minor)-Aerith Gainsborough
Wyclef Jean-Barret Wallace
Devon Aoki-Yuffie Kisaragi

Even if they made another CG movie like its sequel Advent Children, I'd still like the characters to look like and be voiced by the above selections.

CG movie = Characters from the FF7 universe. They AREN'T going to make the characters look like real life actors. Imagine how pissed off the FF fans would be if they were expecting to see Vincent, and instead saw HAYDEN. Also, the actors you've chosen sound unsuitable to me.

In a recent interview, a guy from FFVII's team at Square-Enix, said that the last title of the Compilation will be presented in a "new format".

Can you imagine if they make it a live-action movie?

Poor us.

What about Michael, Carly, and Hugh?

Raebus
05-23-2008, 11:52 PM
Hugh Jackman = He looks nothing like sephiroth and I can't imagine him playing him.

I don't know about the rest. A live action film would just be terrible, completely and utterly terrible.

I think the reason Squeenix were so pissed off about that live action version of the Tifa fight scene is that it basically showed them up by making them think "Crap, we could've easily done Advent Children live action, saved tons of time and money, and it would've been just as good."

But me? I'd rather see it serialised in anime form like Star Ocean 2 was.

Yeah, Cloud's spiky haiir must be challenging to emulate... maybe that cane be a wing and then his real hair is long like Vincent's, except he's blonde.

If it was to be a film it would be crap. But if it were a trilogy or perhaps even as big as the star wars saga (a "sesilogy" I think) then if may be able to fit the storyline in.

In fact I think that any FF movies that square enix makes in the future should be trilogies.

err..you'd want to put american idol finalists in a movie? people with probably little to no acting experience? That doesn't seem like a good choice at all to me, even when ignoring the fact that I hate everything that is American Idol...

Barret is twenty years younger thanMr. T.Fixed.

It'd be tough to match character appearances with real-life actors, so there'd always be some controversy or dispute. Many of the popular choices are simply way too old to convincingly portray the roles they're suggested for. Johnny Depp, for instance, doesn't have the smooth twenty-something features needed for Vincent anymore.

It'd probably work better with lesser-known actors who look the part, rather than by shoehorning known stars into unsuitable roles. In a recent interview, a guy from FFVII's team at Square-Enix, said that the last title of the Compilation will be presented in a "new format".That could mean anything from the PS3 to a hardcover novel:p Both of those would be 'new' as far as the compilation's concerned...

BG-57

That's why my list of suggestions is so narrow; it's hard to find people who match both the voice and appearance of the characters (especially the original character designs).

That being said, I wonder if Juliette Binoche would make a good voice actress for Aeris. She has a waifish innocent quality about her that would complement the character. Except maybe the accent would be a problem?

Tifa has always been a problem for me; she's such a contradiction in terms of appearance and personality. Seeing Hillary Swank in Million Dollar Baby has convinced me she could do the physical part but I'm not sure she has the right voice.

I had a random thought on the way home from work today about Tim Curry playing Hojo. I might buy that.

either of those Hojos would be amazing, also, carly actually might make a good Tifa, but Micheal as Cloud fails
