Mozilla is gearing up for their 'Download Day', which is when they'll officially release version 3 of their Firefox web browser (currently available as a beta). At the same time, they've also decided to go for a Guinness world record for the 'most software downloads in 24 hours'. While they haven't announced when the 'Download Day' will actually be, they have a website up where you can pledge to download it on day 1 and they can keep you updated on when it will actually happen.

Check out the site for extra details and to check out the pledges made.

Spread Firefox | Download Day 2008 (http://www.spreadfirefox.com/en-US/worldrecord)

Bermuda was at 7 pledges when I found this earlier today. It's up to 12 as of this posting...though they still don't show us on the map.

If you use firefox (and maybe even if you don't!) consider participating on the 17th

I will do if I remember, but I have an exam on that day! :(

Flying Mullet

I can download it on the 17th.

And I thought this was going to be a thread asking if you ever had any aspirations of becoming a record breaker in any category.

University of Guelph once broke the world record for most simultaneous soap bubbles blown out of those plastic wands. Guess how I know about this?

As for the topic, I will probably participate, if i can remember to. Make another poast on that day Rubahs!

I won;t participate. I just got Opera 9.5 today. So stick that in your firefox and smoke it!

If I get the next version, will I have to re-download all of my add-ons?

rubah
06-13-2008, 05:46 PM
Uh, firefox has had a 'check for updates' feature forever so you don't have to do it by hand xD There are probably some that will break because no one has updated them, but the ones that are updated have been updated to work with ff3.
(forecastfox, adblock plus, gmail notifier, firebug for example)

I think they count p2p, mullet

Cloudane
06-17-2008, 07:11 PM
I can't imagine they'd have any official counting method other than their own servers, so that rules out p2p or mirrors.

There's a 24 hour window though - once the initial rush is over (a few hours?) I reckon it'll respond fine.

Flying Mullet
06-17-2008, 07:11 PM
When was the official kick-off for the 24 hour period?

rubah

About an hour and a half ago, mulley. 10am pacific daylight time.
Index of /pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/3.0 (http://kyoto-mz-dl.sinet.ad.jp/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/3.0/)

This mirror had a page up saying 'WAIT do not download yet!' so I think it must be good now.

When I looked earlier (before it got swamped), the spreadfirefox site had a table that listed different torrents and p2p, so I can only imagine they are tracking those somehow.

Quoted from slashdot:

Since not all of us use windows and want their system in english, let's decompose that link a bit:

http://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-3.0&os=win&lang=en-US [mozilla.org]

You select your version with the GET variables. So, for other OS's:

* Linux: change os=win to os=linux
* Mac: change os=win to os=osx

For other languages, you can substitute the language variable such as en-GB for British English, de for German and fr for French. Not all of them are up right now, but they will be soon.

This is the link from the e-mail I just got for having pledged: Firefox web browser | Faster, more secure, & customizable (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/?p=downloadday)

I downloaded a couple hours ago. No different than RC3 or whatever I was on, unless there are some bugfixes or something. Still, it's awesome it's finally done.

Also, everyone should try out PicLens (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5579). Not the most practical extension, but really cool.

I should've bumped yours, except I was oblivious. It's okay, mozilla deserves two threads!

that's funny, dan; I downloaded the beta in like january and loved it! I guess they cancel out!

anyways, azar, there's not really any difference from the RC3; I've heard they're the exact same, which is kinda lame for us who have been faithfully betaing, but good for everyone else because that means that this is pretty stable, unlike how some websites are suggesting xD

I signed up for the email reminder so I downloaded it today. :P The only differences I've noticed are that it's not compatible with a bunch of my extensions and there's no little "go" butten next to the address bar. Oh, and it looks different, but I usually use a custom theme anyway.

The go button is like IE and only shows up when you need it, usually where the bookmark star is.

Also the lack of a "home" button sucks ass still.

rubah

I have a home button. Now that I think about it, you have to do something weird to get it, but I don't remember what xD It obviously wasn't difficult though!

Shoeberto

Yeah, there's definitely a Home button. Plus you can add/remove any of those buttons by right-clicking the area and going to "Customize."

According to something of theirs (the email or FAQ, can't remember), they disabled the Update mechanism for today to force people to download the full thing so that it counts towards the record.

Yes, I do hate Firefox. When I downloaded it in its early days it basically broke a lot, and I refused to trust it ever since.

Well I lie, I've since tried it again but it was still slower than every other browser I was running (hello Opera).

I like Opera because unlike a certain other browser it doesn't compel me to be a pompous wanker who thinks he's better than everyone else for using Opera, and I don't come out with pretentious http://forums.eyesonff.com/images/smilies/rpg_009.gifhttp://forums.eyesonff.com/images/smilies/rpg_009.gifhttp://forums.eyesonff.com/images/smilies/rpg_009.gifhttp://forums.eyesonff.com/images/smilies/rpg_009.gifhttp://forums.eyesonff.com/images/smilies/rpg_009.gifhttp://forums.eyesonff.com/images/smilies/rpg_009.gifhttp://forums.eyesonff.com/images/smilies/rpg_009.gifhttp://forums.eyesonff.com/images/smilies/rpg_009.gif like "my browsing experience is better". smurf your Firefox fan community, it's a piece of smurfing software, not the presidential candidate. In fact I only started using it because this site stopped working on Internet Explorer AND Firefox all of a sudden, and I couldn't post, so I had to try an alternative. It's since started working again, but I'm so used to Opera now that I just click it instinctively instead of IE.

Oh, and speed dials own everything.

Anyway, any word on how the record attempt actually went?

I know what you meant. I was kinda like when I refused to use winamp5 and kept using winamp3 despite the bugginess, lack of features, etc. You'll have to switch sometime though, because suddenly your websites won't work on that 15 year old firefox2!

Any particular reason you posted other than to troll a fan thread with anti-fan flamebait? BTW you sound as much of an Opera fanboy as us lot may sound like Firefox fanboys so... pot/kettle/black.

there's not quite so many opera fanboys, so you might as well let him say his piece xD

Well I'm using Opera to make this post (I'm using Opera for my main account and Firefox for my Mafia stuff because I usually have to be more active with that) and it's taking freaking forever for stuff to load.

I had to replace a lot of my add ons and stuff...and it looks like this theme that's supposed to be compatible with Firefox 3 doesn't work on the actual browser! I do like how the previews for the threads are as big as they are in IE now. They were so tiny before :(
