Discuss the great-ness that is Monty Python!

Go go go!

It's hard to discuss :p What can you say? Monty Python is one of the greatest comedic acts in history, and has basically influenced directly or indirectly everything done since in the entire realm of comedy.

YouTube - Fish License (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5MnyRZLd8A) <- Love this sketch. "And the late, great Marcel Proust... 'AD AN 'ADDOCK!"

Funny, I was just watching a bunch of Python sketches. :greenie:

Yep, classic stuff. Obviously the films get a lot of praise, and Holy Grail is one of the funniest things I've ever seen, but the TV show has a lot of great sketches that are sometimes forgotten. The Communist Quiz, Upper Class Twit of the Year, Self Defence Against Fruit...I don't think any other sketch comedy has come close since.

The show is good but sometimes a bit indulgent. The best stuff on it is gold though. I preferred the films which were all very funny, though Holy Grail could have done with a proper ending XD - but Life of Brian is one of the best comedies ever, it's pitched perfectly and and is more relevant today than ever.

I was in the room while my brother was watching the Holy Grail movie. I've never really watched it.

I did find the part where the French didn't know French humorous, as well as when they were reading the rules for counting to three. :bounce:

Oh wow, I haven't seen Monty Python in years.

Here are some of the ones that I remembered I liked, though.

I never really got into Flying Circus. I liked the Holy Grail a lot more.

"Number two: The larch."

Yeah, Monty Python rules. The Ministry of Silly Walks, the Tobacconist (Hungarian Phrasebook), and the Dirty Fork are some of my favorites.

The only thing I can think of that comes close to Python is The Two Ronnies.

Monty Python is funny in spots but overall there all a bit overrated. Some of the humor is too dated to find funny in this day and age.

I... I...

Edit: The really scary part is that when I saw Dreddz had posted, I was half-expecting some nonsense disparaging the Pythons :monster:

I actually find that it's quite similar to the humour today. The Simpsons, South Park and stuff like that are clearly inspired by Monty Python.

I wouldn't say the humour has dated really, it's certainly worn a lot better than other comedies of the 70s. If you were going to aim a criticism at the TV show it would be that it could be somewhat hit and miss at times. But dated? I don't agree.

I think Monty Python is unfunny in some parts. Though it's not overrated, as it was totally different to comedy at the time, and I have yet to see much that can rival it in terms of comedic genius. They're the Beatles of comedy, really.

Also, they're vastly funnier than most modern comedy. My god, the new stuff all sucks. ENOUGH OF THE LAME SITCOMS. I just want to see some random, funny sketches, or more decent sitcoms.

Bring on Morecambe and Wise reruns! Bring on Red Dwarf! Bring on Faulty Towers, and all the other classics! I would be quite happy if they just repeated the IT Crowd, rather than introduce new *cough crap cough* "comedy" programmes.
