View Full Version : FFIV DS: Is it worth it?

So I've been reading some importers reviews of this game, and there's really nothing that makes the game stand out. In fact they added far more in the GBA version than they did in this version. I've never felt graphics would make a game better, so if really all they did was update the graphics, is there really any reason to get this game? FFIV was never an outstanding game to me. And I already own the GBA version...
Honestly I think I might have to pass on this game.

It's pretty much just a presentation upgrade, yeah. There are a few cool features like harder boss battles, a couple of new scenes that help fill out some backstories and a new (admitably fairly tacked on) ability system but if you didn't like the original I can't see this version winning you over.
Like FFIII DS, it's one for the fans.

It just depends on how big a fan you are of Final Fantasy IV. I gave that game a 9.5/10, so I'm getting Final Fantasy IV for the DS the day it comes out. It's a personal choice.
By the way, don't forget that in Japan they released Final Fantasy IV: The After, a cellphone sequel. It's released in episodes, I hope we get this game!

except one major difference. I was never able to own a copy of FFIII until it was released for the DS in america. FFIV however I have copies of on multiple systems. I like the game, but just for a graphics upgrade doesn't seem worth it. Especially with other new original games coming out around the same time, even FFTA2, another game by the same company!

they're mostly minor changes if you ask me
FFIV GBA added new dungeon and more story stuff and the ability to change your characters out. That adds far more to the game IMO. 99% of the changes for the DS version are nothing significant.
The only really major change I can see, is the decant ability system.

I'm sure you can buy it used in a couple years for $9.99 if you don't think it's worth it now.

If I remember right, they said that the GBA version was missing about 1/3 of the original script, along with the PS version. They said they would correct this in the DS version. Am I right or am I just crazy or something.

They said that the original game (and all subsequent ports) was only about 25% of what they originally planned. Whether that means story wise or overall content is rather ambiguous.
Either way, what actually ended up in the DS version is nothing like what they implied. Although they did say they were going to try to put 'some' of the cut content into the game so I guess they didn't exactly lie.

I think u don't need to ask if the DS version of this game worth it... if u are a big fan of this game, will be awesome to play it just even if there is no change at all on the script, items, dungeons, and that stuff... 'cause just seeing ur loved characters in a 3D enviroment is awesome!
Of course, if u are not a great fan of FFIV, u can just play the snes, gba, or ds version with no need to play them all...

I guess the big question I really mean to ask is, with brand new original games coming out around the same time, like FFTA 2, is it worth buying another copy of a game I've played countless times. Did they really add enough new stuff to warrant buying it among many new games/titles coming out at the same time?
I liked FFIV, but I didn't love it, and it would not kill me to wait til it dropped dramatically in price to get it. I still haven't bought New Super Mario Bros because it is still 35 dollars, and I do not feel it is worth 35 compared to other titles

Between the Decant Item system and completely revised boss battles, FFIV DS is like a whole new game. The GBA port was a hack job, but this is a true remake.

I pretty much was going to say the same thing. I haven't played it, though. However, from what I read, it sounds like it is going to be worth it. Can't wait untill next month.
I'm sick of just watching people play it on Youtube! :mad2:

You can learn some abilities like Darkness and others. As in learn I mean like Kain having Darkness and Rydia having Bahamut in the action menu.

No. There are two (technically three) new optional bosses but you fight them in established locations.

I will be purchasing this. But I have to admit, I've been spoiled by the GBA version due to the fact that near the end you can switch out party members and felt quite disappointed that the DS version didnt include it =(

How much did you pay for your Playstation to enjoy this/these game(s)? :P j/k
Hey, on YouTube they have people playing this game in english. Some videos are as old as January. How might this be possible? Has it been released in AU/UK or something?

I agree with Vyk, except without the not kidding part.
First, it was never always playstation, It was SNES first then playstation, then GBA, now DS. Why is it like this? Because people who run gaming companies will market their ports/remakes toward the financially popular console. FF genre was nintendo (and le wonderswan) until 6, when 7 came out they made the wisest choice to put the next Final Fantasies on the playstation, knowing that A LOT of people bought FF's for the playstation they ported the earlier Final Fantasy's to the playstation because they know that the die-hard FF fans are going to buy it.
When they released the ports to the GBA they made a great decision, Having your childhood memories portable?! Awesome! And the people who bought these games showed that, yes having portable nostalgia is fun.
So why is it going to the DS? Because the DS is a -very- well selling system, there's no reason for them to put it on anything BUT the DS. Playstation games are gone, Ps2 games are going (if not gone) and to be honest if they made a ps3 FFIV there would be a mass hysteria from FFVII fan's due to the fact that they're constantly swarming when it comes to a Ps3 FFVII remake! If you want to keep any one happy, it's the FFVII fans and Squeenix knows this -very- well. Plus, personally, I don't think FFIV would be high on their priorities of FF remakes for the ps3, FFVII for sure, FFVI maybe.
Who are the people who are going to buy FFIV-DS? The one's who have the nostalgia factor (like me and people my age), The one's who have bought ALL the ports and remakes of FF games solely to have played them all (AKA the die hard fans), and those who just want to see an old game be remade into a 3D wonder (AKA those going after the graphics aspect.).
With that said, FFIV is my second favorite FF, My second FF game on the SNES, and one that I just all around love. I prolly won't buy it the day it comes out, but I'll get it at some point. I'm always interested in seeing what remakes can do to a game, especially one that has a nostalgia factor for me.
Its actually fitting (though has nothing to do with their reasoning) that it comes back to a Nintendo system
After watching some videos on YouTube I'm actually really interested, and just may get it next week. A DS game that's not all gimicky and pick-up-and-play'ish. Something that's going to be long and mature'ish

People like me! :D People who've played Final Fantasy before that game VII that I hear was a dull roar in the gaming industry.
Then I'm sure there is some kid who's heard of Final Fantasy, has a DS, but never has played it. He'll see this game in say a GameStop and hopefully buy it.
And maybe we can get those people who say "I-VI suck because they're not 3D wah wah wah" to play it because, hey, it's 3D.

Exactly, but not only that, with the.. well nice number of years in between FF games (numbered series games) these kinds of releases can easily bring some of the newer gamers in for the sole fact that they may have played VII-XII and now, other than spin off's the only numbers left are the one's before VII, with FFIV being on a well-bought handheld-console, it increases the chances of the younger gamers picking this game up (as they did with FFIII) to see what FF games were about BEFORE FFVII or FFVIII.
Squeenix is at least smart enough to know to release all these games a good time inbetween the numbered games, most people have beaten FFXII so now they're just waiting around for something else even interesting to pop up, I'd say this would be pretty interesting.

I'M WITH YOU THERE AMEN! (FFVII isn't the holy grail of Final Fantasy! get over it!!) Final Fantasy IV was my first and most favorite, so i for one am going to get it!
I don't feel this deserves it's own topic but it has added to its "worth it" value for me: Multi-language support!
Switching the DS' language will change the language allegedly, and I desperately am trying to learn French. Now must buy.

I have the game & there are enough changes to the way it's played to make it seem like a whole new experience. I don't know how many times I fought Scarmiglion before beating him cause the difficulty has been ramped up so much. I died in the story event to get Yang back in Baron of all things. You have to develop new strategies for alot of bosses. Not to mention the augments are nice (I gave Cecil the Counter Augment, great for boss battles).
Anyway, in short - it is definitely worth it.

I see your point but I didn't mean an uproar to break out. I was just saying I can play FF 1 - 12 on my PS2 except for 3. So I'm just kind of disapointed that its breaking off to other companies. I'm just one of those people who don't wanna buy a system just to play one game and FF is really all I play.
You should broaden your horizons then. 8-)

I ended up buying the game, and I'll be honest... it may be the first time I fully enjoy a play through of FFIV. It added a lot more customization, which was really my biggest gripe with the game. In the midst of FF1-3 picking classes, FFV picking classes, and FFVI picking characters that were different classes... this one had you stuck as a certain thing, permanently. But now that's pretty much gone as you can customize A LOT.

But to be quite honest. i liked the idea of using certain charachters at certain times. It gave you incentive to use the charachters in every way possible. I dont think i would of ever touched Cecil's white magic if it wasnt for the Dark Elf cave where he is pretty much useless besides a support healer.
Personally, i was hooked on the voice cutscenes. Adds more badassery and awesomesauce to the whole deal. There is also a diffrent vibe to the game that i enjoy, and i think all reemakes try to achieve. Its the same...but with fresh perspective i think.
Other than that, i have been playin the game old school, Ill prolly get to augments on a second run.
Fully recommend it.

I don't own the game but I've watched most of the voiced cutscenes on YouTube and I personally don't like the voice acting. It's not terrible but they really could have done better (I think the only ones I liked were Cecil and Kain). If I ever decide to buy the game, the VA will be turned off (hopefully it can be O.O)
