I haven't seen all of it yet. However, what I have seen is absolutely beautiful in an aesthetic sense, and is hysterical as well.

I've loved everything I've seen of it so far. Maybe I should finish it soon...

Since I'm an aniholic, I tend to jump at the start of every season and start watching about 12 shows at once, I tend to watch the first episode of about 10 and then download the series as it comes out but not watch anymore, and watch 1 half way through and complete one. the case with this show is I watched the first ep, maybe 2, downloaded it as it came out, and the sequel too. It is decent though, I've been meaning to catch up on it, but with about another 150 series in my list to watch, it's a bit hard at times to keep up.

Pretty much me, though I've seen more than one episode. It's very stylish, but it seems uneven. It's funny at times, but at other times it overdoes it or doesn't do enough. The first episode had a Gurren-Lagann reference (among the oooooodles of other references) if you didn't pause to read the chalk boards, you're missing them. Though if you're not exactly an avid fansub-following person (as evidence by you just getting through Red Garden and starting SZS), you probably wouldn't get most of the in-jokes anyway. The one episode of 'Zoku' (the sequel) that I've seen featured a rather elaborate Evangelion reference (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=aP-reR-VgO8). It was pretty amazing. One of the few moments where the show really shines and gets me a little upset that it has such inconsistent content quality (depending on your tastes).

Generally though, it's in my category of 'stuff to watch when I have nothing else to watch'. Hardly a write-off, but low priority for me.

Try looking at some *new* new stuff. I think you might like Toshokan Sensou/Library War which is currently airing. For something slightly older but still one of the best comedies of recent years, look for Ouran High School Host Club if you haven't seen that yet. Ouran is made by the same people who made RahXephon, FMA and Eureka 7, and a RahXephon character makes a minor cameo in it. Nodame Cantabile is also excellent, and more maturely-aimed. It aired for a full season last year, but it's getting a sequel follow-up later this year (they leave Japan and go to Europe). Good stuff.

Nonono, Quon (from RahXephon) indirectly shows up in Ouran (http://i29.:bou::bou::bou::bou::bou::bou::bou::bou::bou::bou::bou::bou:/xddz02.jpg), not Toshokan Sensou.

I personally have trouble getting into shows that rely too much on referential gags to try to be funny. I've tried to struggle through Lucky Star many times, Hayate kind of wore me out (though I did watch the episode where they did the Gurren-Lagann parody...I'm sure you can see where my powerful interest triggers are), and I never even tried KimiAru. I tend to prefer things where you go 'hey, that's actually really clever' rather than 'hey, that looks just like this other thing from somewhere else' or 'lol he fell'.

The director of SZS, Akiyuki Shinbo (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=1610), seems to have a reputation for being a little twisted when he's given the freedom to do so. (Someone here is a MoonPhase fan, he did that too) In SZS, he went wild. A lot of it hit me the wrong way, but some of the things did impress me. But as I did mention before, it was pretty uneven.

I think it's a good idea if you find a show you really like, look into the people who created it. Not just the company, though at times that can be a good indicator, but the directors, writers, designers, music composers, even the voice actors themselves. Find out what *other* stuff they've worked on, because if you liked this one aspect of this show, there's a decent chance you might find something else they've done that you would like. Or even follow them as they go on to make new things. It's one of the best ways to broaden your viewing and see something that might not get talked about much.

You could have just said 'Momiji'. (Moon Phase is one of my very favorites!) :p

I didn't know Shinbo had anything to do with Tsukuyomi -Moon Phase- though-- I'll have to watch the credits again. It says he was also on the staff for Mahou Sensei Negima! as well. (Another one of my favorites).

SZS is hilarious, but it's quite random at some times. I found that I enjoyed the first season slightly more than the second. As for in-jokes and references, there's a near endless amount of them. Even the scribblings on the chalkboard are references to something else. I could just go back and watch my subs again and read all of them, but the on-going jokes (spoken) were usually one I could understand. This is definitely one of the shows where sub quality (assuming you can't read Japanese yourself) is important. a.f.k. translates everything without breaking the mood of the show, but as far as I know, they stopped at episode four of the second season. Something about placement drama on the torrents list and the subber ragequitting.

Fortunately, as this will NEVER be licensed, it'll be up on Veoh for quite some time. anon subs seemed to sub everything they saw (content, I mean) after episode eight or nine. You could imagine my disbelief and anger when episodes could not be found subbed, even after two months after the latest airdate.
