Imagine I'm a stubborn old man(stubborner and older than I am now) and that I've never played FFVIII, or any Final Fantasy for that matter. Why should I play it? What's so great about it? Why should I play it instead of another Final Fantasy as my first foray into this series?

Because it has a gunblade.

Because it has a great storyline, is fun to play, is pretty straight forward to use without being to easy (the draw system), and is romantic (if you don't romance, though that won't convince you).

Why is the storyline great? Why is it fun to play? What's straight-forward about it that makes it fun to play? Mushy stuff, eh? Are there boobies?

Because it has a pretty neat card game as a mini-game in the game itself. You old peepz like card games, right?

If Final Fantasy VII was consider the best game for Playstation, and FF8 is the one after it then the graphics are much more improved and teh story is also great... Aerith just doesn't die!

faster paced than gin rummy. uses numbers & elements & stuff. can be enjoyable if you get into it.

viii also has immensely powerful sorceresses who can bend time and space.

FF8 is set in a crazily sci-fi world that is reminescent of late 1990s America with just enough magic to set it apart.

you start off as a student in a military academy, and you must work your way to the top of your class by completing various missions that are assigned as the game goes on. Not only does this form the modus operandi of the plot, but also is how you earn money in-game, so if you want those new weapons, you better succeed, SOLDIERSeeD!

Not only will you be treated to some excellent FMVs for the year (1999), but also a budding romance, excellent battle system, addictive card game, intricate (but not overbearing) politics, and a trip to outer space.

I love it~

Faster than Gin Rummy? Will I need to take my medication to play it?

Why is the battle system excellent? Why is the card game addictive? how are the politics intricate? I like outer space.

No :( It's not better than Rummy either (because, who are we kidding.. Rummy is ultimate win), but it's still pretty darn good and simple. Also, there are pretty pictures on the cards. Old peepz like to look at pretty things, right?

The battle system is excellent like this:
Your magic comes in discrete units which you can absorb from enemies and from natural springs in the world. This is actually called "paramagic" in comparison to "magic" which is what a breed of women called sorceresses are inherently able to use and is not discrete. paramagic is basically science attached to your head.

This doctor scientist invented a way to attach the paramagic to your brain by entering into arcane agreements with mystical beasts. In doing this, you are able to jump high, look better, and perform better in bed. The battle system is centered around this beast/mind arrangement; they allow you to use commands other than 'attack', passively use magic to focus your strength, vitality, health, spiritual defense, and provide elemental and status barriers as well.

The discrete units when absorbed (or "Drawn") are added to a pool, and when that pool is attached to a specific statistic, the more that is in the pool, the more your stat is augmented, giving you amazing free reign to develop your characters as you'd like.

The card game is addictive because 1) it is simple to pick up and 2) it behooves you to become addicted to it, for purposes of gaining items.

the politics are intricate because they begin from the very first hour of the game in obscure references in text books and govern almost every single event of the game, instead of being a mystical quest arbitrarily set by some vague demiforce. You are children of fate, but that fate takes a large form in the governments of the world.

The outer space is sexcellent.

No. Faster was a poor choice of words. It's not played at a faster pace than Gin Rummy, it's just shorter. Takes less time, not faster.

I didn't know old people played anything except for the Wii though.

Why is the story great?

It has action, romance, funny moments, it's never boring! There is always a little detail that will keep us playing this game :)

The only reason you should play this game is if you don't have Final fantasy VII.

no i'm joking of course, its good fun it has a strange romance between two soldiers called Biggs and Wedge, it has a cool village with these guys that look like mutated Guado. Quistis has an awesome ownage scene. Squall and Rinoa grooving is lovely. Seifer is a legend and hearing him rip it out of Zell is always rewarding. ohhh there is a song about a train, Mysterious Laguna and Raine who is like an older version of Tifa.
loads of reasons why this game rocks!

I'd say FFVIII is worth playing for a number of reasons. The story has enough complexity to draw you in, and actually make you care about the characters and their world. It's also a plot with a lot of action, and a lot of deception. That's +2 male-ness right there. In fact, one group of heroes in the game is a trio of men who're war buddies and drinking buddies. Some aspects of the story are interactive, too - by controlling the main character, you can influence the direction of some conversations, and also choose who to talk to while exploring a new town or area. That's another part that's worth mentioning - the game takes place in a wholly original fantasy world, with numerous towns, cities, ruins, and wildernesses to navigate and explore.

The plot and characters aren't all the game has to offer, though. Actually controlling the heroes during combat is an involved process, since you control all of their actions and not simply their ability to attack. Outside of actual combat, you can also manage and control the characters' various strengths and specialties, in great detail if you so choose.

~So, that's how I'd market the game to someone of Mullet's 'demographic'.

Why should it be your first Final Fantasy? It shouldn't. There's no other answer.

Why should it be played at all? If you love the franchise and want to complete them all, I wouldn't go so far as to say you'd be wasting your time by playing it. However, if you only have a passing interest in the series, than you can skip it. Sure, it has it's moments, but you won't be missing much.

1) A gun Blade really isn't a gun. It's a vibrating sword.

2) Yes, the plot is complex, so complex it has been convulted to the point that poeple think the hot lady is really the evil baddie from a future so far away there is no way it could be her.

3) This card game is no where near as awesome as Gin Rummy.

4) This so called paramagic is rarely going to be used, as if you use it it will weaken you, and to regain you're power you will need to re-draw it from an enemy or draw point.

5) You're main character is a tool.

6) The best reason to play this game is to laugh at the horrid story.

7) The second best reason is Rinoa is really hot, hot enough to make a man your age want to get out the old viagra bottle.

8) Zell is cool.
