A while ago before I bought this game I looked up a few reviews for it there is no way i was gonna buy it if they made it as bad as FF X-2.Anyway i came across a review saying that this game copies the plot of star wars the only evidence he supplied was the bad guys are called the empire I disregarded that thinking it was just another reason to bash the game but now ive played it and i started thinking holy hell hes right think about it. Your main character is poor lives in slums and is surrounded by desert (Tatoonie and luke skywalker ) and then meets a space pirate named balthier who owns a airship (Han Solo and the milennium falcon)along with his half animal half human thing Fran(Chewbacca)and then a princess named ashe(Princess leia) and some 40 year old swordwielder basch (Obi Wan) and a useless whiny girl Penelo(C3PO)

The areas are also based on Star Wars the place the Viera live in looks a lot like where the wookies live treehouses and all Nabredus deadlands looks like Dagobah (the planet yoda trains luke)Mt Bur Omisace is Hoth and look into my eyes and tell me Bhujerba aint Cloud City.

This game was obviously to some extent based on Star Wars discuss.

There have been numerous nods to Star Wars in various Final Fantasys over the years, so it's not much of a stretch that they might want to make more of a Star Wars tribute game.

The connections between the two stories are pretty tenuous, really. Sure there's an empire and some rebels, there's an urchin-turned-hero (kinda, though Vaan's not really the saviour of the world or anything), a slew or aerial battles, and the final dungeon is a [spoiler]giant, super-powered combat fortress[/spoilers], but that's about it.

If some of the environments looks like something out of Star Wars, that's because those films used a lot of real-world locations too. FFXII's architecture is based on a lot of actual cities.

The Viera environment closely resembles the film version of Tolkien's Lothlorien, more than anything from Episode III.

Floating islands are nothing new to fantasy; anyone who thinks Episode V invented those ought to broaden their reading a little:p Aside from the fact that both are floating and both involved in some kind of mining, Bhujerba and Cloud City are completely dissimilar.
Mt Bur Omisace is a mountain, so it's covered in snow. Just like mountains in real life. Doesn't make it a Hoth reference.

Penelo is an upbeat support character, there to watch out for Vaan and constrain his recklessness. Completely at odds with 3PO. Obi-Wan and Basch are also as dissimilar as you can get, in terms of their role in the story.

While there are some similarities, and some things showing a definite influence, I don't think it's fair to say FFXII was actually based on Star Wars. The same could apply to virtually any epic, quest-based fantasy story, including most of the other Final Fantasy titles.

The Final Fantasy franchise is laced with Star Wars references. I, however, have never experienced anything Star Wars, and I don't plan to any time soon.

It has a LOT of similarities to star wars, but I wouldn't go so far as to say its BASED on it.

Another thing that people didn't pick up on is, while Gabranth is like Darth Vader, he uses bounty hunters on the side who are after Balthier (just like Vader hiring Bubba Fett to get Han Solo). Some similarities are too striking, but its more like the creator wasn't consciously aware of his influences. I'm a story writer myself and it happens to me all the time. I get an idea and then see the film or game that I got the idea from and I'm like "oh THAT's where I saw it".

Aside from the fact that both are floating and both involved in some kind of mining, Bhujerba and Cloud City are completely dissimilar.

Bhujerba tries its best to remain neutral, uneasily allows the empire to enter, then takes charge for the rebels at the end.

I was calling this early on, too, at this point of its circulation, it's obviously more than just similarities. The executive producer for FFXII was the director of FFII, a game which had the most, or the only one with, star wars similarities than any of the original FF's (I-IV)

Only if you take a very abstract look at their roles - Luke and Vaan being as different as can be - and if you ignore the fact that many of them are established Final Fantasy tropes as well. "A man with a sword" hardly makes one the same as the other. You could just as easily argue that Star Wars is a rip-off of The Bible or The Lord of the Rings...

Cloud City, suspended in the atmosphere of a gas giant planet, was a truly neutral outpost that'd sell to all comers.
