This is something that i dont feel is explained very well in the game.
What exactly are the GF?? Are the spirits? gods? demons? Where do they come from? are they self aware? do they have a society like the espers from 6? are they immortal?

i basicly dunno any of this and wonder what all you lot think?

GFs are powerful magical beasts, who choose to join your party (or allow themselves to be junctioned). They are definitely self-aware, as can be seen with Ifrit, Bahamut and others. Because most people, with the exception of sorcerers, do not have the ability to use magic, Dr Odine found a way to junction these GFs to one's mind, and therefore allow one to use magic through the GFs.

When junctioned they live in the person's mind, and that is why they can cause memory loss.

So: GFs are self-aware magical beings that allow themselves to be junctioned to a human's mind, to supplement the person's ability through para-magic.

GF is designed to assist the party in killing "evil" things.

The game discusses them as 'independent energy sources'--odine studied them, but he never looked into whether they had 'society', or what they really were. That seems to very--they're powerful beings who are, yes, self-aware. The conversations with Ifrit and with Bahamut, for instance, display their sentience, and Ifrit not only knows what he is, but is aware of Shiva's presence.
