Also, just in case this turns out to be a lie some time over the next few hours, if there was a DS port, what would you like to see in it? New dungeons? New playable characters? Etcetera?

*rocks back and forth*

This is a rumor. OR IS IT? I don't know, but I really don't want to get my hopes up.

I don't think new playable characters would make me enjoy it any more (probably less, actually). However, new dungeons and side quests (and/or character developing side quest type deals) would be rad. Maybe new weapons and equipment, or new abilities. New monsters. NEW EVERYTHING.

Anyway, here's to hoping it isn't just a port. If I want to play Chrono Trigger as it is I'll do it on a TV. Gimme more side quest, character development, difficulty, and general awesomeness and I'll be quite happy, thank you very much.

I've been wanting to play this game for the longest time, but due to my dislike of emulators and being in the wrong part of the world I haven't been able to, apart from the very early stages of it, so I'll be delighted if it does come out on the DS.

I was actually thinking the other day about which ports I'd like to see come out on the DS, and Chrono Trigger was top of my list. :p

The whole game will be a new experience for me, so I'll be fine with it as it is.

What's the expected US release date, late 2009..?

Is this going to be a 3D remake or just a straight port? It baffles me why Square go to so much effort to port and remake their games when they could be making brand new ones. I would much, much prefer it if Square made a brand new Chrono title instead of a port. Its not like im going to buy this or anything. Its just the same game I beat years ago after all.

Im surprised people arent angered by Square. Chrono Trigger should of been put on the VC. Putting it on the DS is a ploy by Square to charge you four times the amount they would on the VC.

If I didn't find myself having to force myself to keep playing Chrono Trigger once I hit Zeal, I'd agree with you entirely. As it stands, though, I wouldn't be buying either version. :P

Apparently it's a port with extras. And not only that, it's due out in America this holiday season!

It baffles me why Square go to so much effort to port and remake their games when they could be making brand new ones. I would much, much prefer it if Square made a brand new Chrono title instead of a port.

The thing is that the key people who made the Chrono games don't work for Squenix anymore. Sure they could make some with new people, but I do recall Square saying some time ago that they wouldn't do it because it wouldn't have the 'heart' of the original games. Though times have changed since then, so I wouldn't put it past them once CTDS proves to be successful.

Absolutely agree. But this is another one of my 'you're right, but I understand why they do it' things. Simple fact: there are far more DSes out there than there are people with Wiis and internet access. Squenix isn't gonna put anything on there that they *know* will sell off of a shelf, unless it's something that they originally intended to put on there (like 'My Life as a King'). I highly doubt "King's Knight" (which is on the VC) would sell too well on a shelf today, no matter how prettied up it was.

As Roto pointed out though, it's not going to be a 'straight port', otherwise there really would be no good reason to not put it on the VC. VC games are untouched, presented exactly (with few exceptions (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_Console#Differences_from_original_games)) how they were when they were first released. So by adding random junk to the game, I can imagine them kind of having an 'oops, oh well we can't put this on virtual console now' attitude.

I'm glad they're not putting it in 3d like the FF remakes.

I am most pleased. I'm not quite sure what I want from it to be honest. For them not to screw it up would be nice. So would some extra dungeons and character development. One thing I always liked about CT was how each character seemed to have their own specific time in the limelight both through the plot itself and through the sidequests. Despite not knowing what I want, I'm really looking forward to it.

A port of CC might be nice as well, so I can actually play that.

that seems what it's like from the Square-Enix press release and what all the sites are saying.

I'm glad they're doing it, I know alot of people will be thrilled, but I'd be more inclined to buy a remake. CT has great graphics as it is (just cause it's not 3d doesn't mean it's not good graphics), so I think the emulator on my PS3's Linux or my laptop with some speakers will due just fine.

Doesn't seem to hard to find it to me. Brand new, even!

You could play it on your PS3 with backward compatibility, play it on an emulator on your PC, or hack it to the PSP! I'm doing the third option with my copy; I have a perfectly working PS2, but you can't beat portability.

I love the way this, SE's most shameless cash-grab yet, is the thing that has redeemed them in the eyes of many naysayers. When it's Final Fantasy they're "milking the cash cow" but when it's Chrono Trigger they're "making the game accessible for the younger generation".

Momiji
07-03-2008, 04:51 AM
I don't see how this is a shameless cash-grab. They're making a great game that's damn near impossible to find on the SNES and unplayable on the PlayStation available, that not only adds wireless features, but makes it portable as well-- something many fans have been wanting for quite some time now.

Karellen
07-03-2008, 05:08 AM
The few new features they're adding don't justify the inevitable $40 price tag, especially when SE had the option of releasing it on virtual console for much cheaper. Maybe SE will surprise us and release it at budget price but I seriously doubt it.

Point is, ports like this are pretty much the same thing SE has been doing for a while now. I'm surprised people (and not just people here, it's like this on every RPG board I've been to) are viewing this one in a more optimistic light.

Yar
07-03-2008, 05:13 AM
This will only be its second (but first good) port. The PSX rerelease wasn't recent either. It isn't like I&II's 6 ports, or even IV's 4 ports. Now THAT'S milking the cash-bull.

SEE WHAT I DID THAR?

Momiji
07-03-2008, 05:13 AM
Well, in my case, I can't find the SNES cartridge anywhere that isn't $50+. Also, the PlayStation port is so damn awful that I can't stomach playing it for more than 30 minutes.

What's good about this is that it's portable and has a few new features. And if you don't like the price, you don't have to buy it right away (with any luck the price will decline) or at all, even-- no one said you had to. It's for the fans of the game, pretty much. I don't see anything wrong with this. And besides, old Square games are so much better than the newer ones. < /blatant opinion>

I don't like SE for most cases.

Now, when it comes to FF, I don't bitch when there are ports or remakes, I only bitch when they make a million spin offs for ever game that was deemed "popular" at some point. If an FF has a number 1-12 I won't bitch.
Yes, I am annoyed that there are like 3 FFXIII's, the only one I'll even look at is which ever one is the REAL FFXIII.

With that said, I never bothered buying FFChronicals when it came out. So I am looking totally forward to a CT port, I would love to have all my child hood games to be portable. What I would NOT like though, is to have all my child hood games being raped and forced to spawn various spin offs for the sake of money.

I agree. When ever I see Toriyama's work in anything I can automatically be like "Hey that looks like -random DBZ person" which really kills everything. Every time I looked at Chrono I thought like, Irish Goku and Marle was Bulma, and Ironically so was Lucca. Then Frog in his human form was Trunks, and Magus was vegeta. Yeah, I'm not too much of a fan of his work because everything he draws looks exactly the same, but I mainly just wanted voices and more personality in the characters. Especially wanted to see Frog draw the Masamune in 3D. :jokey:

And all I really want are a few more double and Triple techs in this game.

Hell, if there was ever a Chrono Cross remake or port, I would demand more double techs. No way in hell it sits well with me that Trigger and its 7 characters had more double techs then Cross and it's what, 20 some odd characters?

I'm optimistic, because I love this freaking game. I had to play it on the crappy PS port. Which was awful. It made it unbearable to get through a single playthrough with its incredible loading and saving times. Yes, it does matter. As for finding one on the SNES thats not going to happen, and if I'm going to rebuy this game, I wouldn't mind having something a little extra tbh.

Yeah. Jeez. It really hurts my head when people complain about companies like Capcom and Square re-releasing and rehashing old games in an attempt to just harvest money. It would be one thing if they were just money-grubbing without giving back anything decent, but for these 2 companies it's not the case. Here are some upcoming non-sequel, non-franchise (and non-cel phone :P) games from Square-Enix that would likely be impossible to properly fund without the continuous income of their rereleases:

Nanashi no Game - DS (came out today in JP, horror game)
Infinite Undiscovery (http://forums.eyesonff.com/general-square-enix/117422-infinite-undiscovery.html) - PS360
The Last Remnant (http://forums.eyesonff.com/general-square-enix/104919-last-remnant.html) - 360
Sigma Harmonics - DS (Mystery RPG)

Sure, some of you folks may not be interested in any of these, or in The World Ends With You (http://forums.eyesonff.com/general-square-enix/115364-world-ends-you-ds.html), but that's okay. Square relies on you to buy all their sure-shots so they can continue to make more unique games (or at least recoup some development costs) for those that do want more from them. I vastly prefer this strategy to Atari's, where DBZ is basically all that's keeping them (barely) afloat (http://kotaku.com/5021417/infogrames+controlled-atari-gets-49-percent-of-publishing-revenues-from-dbz).

I don't mind if game companies keep 'taking', however shameless it may appear (it is business after all), as long as they 'give' something worthwhile back once in a while.

One thing I don't agree with though, is how Squenix DS games are $10 more than all other 3rd party games, or $5 more than Nintendo's own top quality games. Since there aren't any particularly significant enhancements to Chrono Trigger (like being in 3D), I really hope they don't add their normal 'tax' to the title.

Akira Toriyama's characters look fine the first time you see his work. After that, though, you just see three different characters wearing new cloths and hairstyles. I don't know why Japan is so crazy about him.

I'm pretty sure Japan doesn't like him just because of his art :P just that his art is easily recognizable. It's all about Dragon Ball and by extension, Dragon Quest. 'Japan' practically grew up with those two franchises, so having Toriyama's art on anything that isn't already related to those two is counting on tugging those nostalgic heartstrings.

When you think of characters he's made, you likely think the most about 'Hero' characters or certain villains, generally people who should be relatively conservative in design so to appeal easier to a broader audience. I feel his personal style shines through when he's not confined having to make something look 'normal', particularly his Monster designs. He's a very creative guy when it comes to that, and I think he probably prefers drawing Monsters where he can do whatever he wants rather than humanoid heroes who have to look a certain way.

I think his art is just overexposed, and I can see how people can get bored of it or even be repelled by it. I still like it.

I'm conflicted with this... I actually own both the PS1 and original SNES copies, I don't really care for extra uber hard dungeons, and I hate multiplayer outside of fighting games, I also can't imagine any new content that would make me buy it cause I thought the original was pretty flawless. On the other hand, if this does well... Maybe SE will use the cash to bring back the original core team and make a third game in the series.

Also, a portable CT is not a bad idea but... I've only like previous ports caused they offered better translations. The GBA remakes of IV-VI and FFT only appeal to me cause they offer better and far more engaging translations. CT actually has a pretty accurate translation if memory serves me correct so it can't offer better insight to the plot.

I am happy its not being turned to 3D cause the original was so damn pretty it still puts some games to shame even today and I've never been one to believe in the foolish notion that 3D is somehow better that 2D graphics.

Edit: about the only thing that would make me pick this game up is if they actually have an extended story that explains the 10 years leading up to CC. This is highly unlikely though.

Looks like the Japanese page is ready. It started the countdown, and looks like we are just 50 hours away of the information explosion.

I have only played the playstation game, and I loved it so much. About a year ago however, I realized I have much less patience for things now, because I couldn't sit through the long wait before fights. I bet that would be fixed sooo....

OH. MY. GOD. YES!!!

I am definently getting this!

Square Enix did a pretty good job putting together a teaser trailer that doesn't tell us anything about the game at all. Well, beyond confirming that the graphics aren't being changed.

What's there to tell? It's a port. I am finally happy that I'll be able to buy it for a console (handheld) now, as CT nor CC ever came out in PAL regions.

I would have thought they would want to show off how they plan on implementing the DS features, since from what I can tell that's their main selling point this time around.

Lord, FFIII and IV DS have touch screen features and neither was ever stressed as selling points. Granted both games had shoddy touch screen features but I doubt they would do anything really special with CT. Like the other two, I'm certain Wi-Fi will be more of the selling point.

Yasunori Mitsuda On Chrono Trigger DS: 'Finally!' (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3168602)

"I was in a slump because I couldn't compose anything, I was going to the hospital regularly for stomach ulcers while I worked, I had a hard-drive crash and lost nearly 40 in-progress tracks...great, I guess I'm only remembering the negative things! But when the entire staff gathered around to watch the ending, I wound up crying anyway (a lot of other staffers were just as deeply moved). I think all of us put a lot of our emotion into the game."

Now that's passion. I wish more game designers would get ulcers and cry over their games.

I don't have much interest in this game. At the very least they should add some more animation frames to make things a bit smoother and up the resolution on...everything. This isn't the 16bit era anymore and they can do more than just a lazy port with a new dungeon and gimmicky features like multiplayer.

They didn't have to make it 3D but they could have done more still. I will not be picking this up unless some earth shattering news hits.

On display at the Los Angeles Convention Center at Concourse 401 from July 15 – 17, the following titles will have playable kiosks: CHRONO TRIGGER®, DRAGON QUEST®: The Chapters of the Chosen™, FINAL FANTASY® IV, INFINITE UNDISCOVERY and SONG SUMMONER: The Unsung Heroes. With five playable titles of the show floor, Square Enix offers a wealth of deep and engaging experiences for a variety of platforms.

meaning anyone who lives in/near LA should go play and tell us about these fancy "new" things... like touch screen controls.

Why? The original North American release had a brilliant translation.

For the time, yes, but it still had many mistakes/censorship which should be fixed. Besides, a lot of text was left out of the NA due to the size limitations of the SNES cartrige.

Besides if Square wants us to pay the full price for a SNES game, its the least they could do.

They did say that various minor changes have been made. Considering it's an impression based on the very beginning of the game, it's kind of hard to tell how many changes have been made to the overall script.

They said they were tweaking it some, so I figure the errors that were left in (which I didn't think there were "many" of), will get cleaned up.

Paying the price of a DS game to get a handheld version of my favorite game of all time is a bargain. ;)

I still haven't noticed any word on a PAL release yet; by the looks of the recent chatter in this thread putting the game in a region it's not previously been could be about the only "new" thing they could do for the DS version.

But then I remember the SNES FFs being repackaged for the PSX and having no localisation for the rest of Europe. If memory serves, mainland European gamers still had to play in English!

From this, along with the mention of crudely recycling the SNES translation, we can deduce that it will only be released in Japanese and English, and therefore only Japan and the US.

Bastards.

(Now somebody will post a news article that's about a week old confirming that there will in fact be a PAL release)

As much as I love Chrono Trigger and Cross, it seems to me that this is just the same game I've played over and over again. It's a great game, but I already own it. What are they going to do different with it? After playing the FFIII and IV DS versions I was hoping they would remake it with something new to look at. I never bothered buying any of the Gameboy Advanced stuff for the mere fact that it's the same games we have for SNES, just with a couple minor changes. So what are they changing in this Chono Trigger?

Not much at all. A bonus dungeon and online play. The only reason I'm planning on getting it is because I don't own it. >_>

I used to say the same thing about the GBA ports but seriously the new translations and extra content have all been pretty bad ass. My only complaint with them was IV had nerfed difficulty (I don't remember Zeromus being that easy, even on the SNES WTF?!), V's extra classes appear so late in the game its difficult to appreciate them, and VI had the Celes' torture scene removed for no good reason. Other than that they are all fantastic games.

As for CT, it just doesn't seem to be offering anything new that's really worthwhile. So I only feel I would pick it up because I have a portable version of one of the best RPGs of all time.

Btw... I am curious to know what was lost from translation cause outside of a few funky translations, I've never heard of any major censorship for the title. Just curious to know.

The only instances of censorship I can think of are already obvious, like characters getting drunk on "soup" and "pop."

I can definitely not wait for this! 'Specially since it's coming out a short time before my birthday. I've been wanting to play it, but the HUGE load times on the psx version were just unbearable. I'm super-psyched for this. Though...I still need to get FFIVDS. Oh well.

I don't know how to feel about this. I like the spirit SE put in Chrono Trigger to port it, but please, why would someone buy it if they emulate it? I guess it comes down to the people who like to own that little piece of gaming legend. I am definitely gonna pick this game up. It's The best rpg to date, i don't think any other has challenged it yet. Some have come close, but none have done right, what this game has.

Multiplayer?

I notice that the original was singleplayer but the DS remake is multiplayer. Anyone know how this will work? Will it be something more like Secret of Mana style or something lame where you have to have already beat the game with both characters or something?
