View Full Version : Okay, For A Second Let's Just Say The Plausible Becomes Fact...
And that Final Fantasy VII is being remade. For PS3, PSP, GBA whatever, that's not what this thread's about.
What happens with Aeir[s/th]'s name? Does it stay traditional as Aeris or does it get even more awkward to pronounce with Aerith?
Which do you prefer, regardless of Square[Enix]'s choice?
Also, this isn't meant to be the topic of this thread but more of a sub-topic: Can they please, please, PLEASE change Barret's dialogue so he doesn't pronouce symbols and talk about "%$!@ pizzas"?

I'd imagine since she's Aerith in Kingdom Hearts and FF7:CC they'd have her as Aerith in a remake.
As for me, I like Aerith.

I like Aeris. It's easier on my tongue.

I'd imagine that a remake would have her as Aerith, since that'd become her 'official' name in all regions regardless of how it was localised in the original English translation.
One hopes that a remake would fix the myriad of grammatical fluffs throughout the game, too - there's quite a lot of dialogue that's awkward, sometimes to the point of being in broken English. Though I'm sure the internet's crawling with geeks who'll demand that they keep "this guy are sick" and similarly silly errors, and they'll make a big angry petition to demand that S-E not fix anything at all.

meh I have always refered to her as Aerith.
I think it should stay Aeris. That way people will pronounce it Aeris. And we won't have any of those "What?! Its pronounced THIS??" crap going on like we do with Tidus and apparently I've been mispronouncing Cecil's name all these years. Screw that crap. Aerith is pronounced as Aeris. Spell it how it sounds :(
On the other hand if it were pronounced the way its spelled. Aerith has a softer friendlier feel to it than Aeris. Too bad that's irrelevant. Otherwise I might be okay with the inevitable change
It'll be Aerith. Regardless of opinions

Didn't they fix those in the PC version anyway? And I don't remember a huge fuss, most of the people seemed to prefer that translation.
And it would be Aerith, though I'd much prefer Aeris, for the reasons Vyk stated. Although I'd actually prefer the pronunciation of Aeris to Aerith as well.

Apparently they fixed the most glaring typos in the PC translation, but didn't actually correct all the grammatical errors or unintentionally clunky or ambiguous lines.

Not sure o.o
...but didn't even think about Barret. It just wouldn't be Barret if they changed his dialogue xD
Same goes for Cid.
(I just hope he'll still say "Sit your ass down in that chair and drink your goddamned TEA!" xD)

I say Aeris. Or I change her name to "I Die L8r" for instant lulz.
Kingdom Hearts isn't canon, and like many Star Wars fans refuse to accept the three prequels, I refuse to accept the Compilation.

In the original game, it should have been "Aerith" from the very start. The default name showing up as "Aeris" in the North American localization is the direct result of a translation error, which is common in such localizations of various games in the series. In the Japanese version, it was, in fact, Aerith. Had there not been a translation error with her name, this would not be an issue of debate.
As for my opinion, I prefer Aerith, but only in part for the reason stated in the last few sentences.

The default name showing up as "Aeris" in the North American localization is the direct result of a translation errorNot an error, as such, but a deliberate choice to deviate from the original script for the sake of aesthetic comfort. Kind of like how Cloud is called Clad in the French translation - not a mistranslation, but simply a localisation choice:)

I'm sure, IN THEORY if there were to be a remake, then they'd have voice actors, meaning renaming the characters would be verrrryyy difficult

I'd assume Aerith considering thats what she was in every other game in the series.

However, official Japanese materials were using the spelling "Aerith", and developers have stated that the name in roman alphabet was (almost) an anagram of the English word "Earth",[6] thus confirming that the intended spelling was indeed "Aerith".
So Aerith. :P

Well, Aeris is an anagram of Raise, which is why they will use Aeris in the remake as it's possible to Raise (or Resurrect if you like) her in that game.
But srsly, I don't care about the silly japanese, it's Aeris dammit.
But, Square has been ignoring it's lisp demographic who have no choice but to say "Raithe..." :(

doesn't matter to me, but I would prefer the original US/PS interpretation.
