View Full Version : Mornington Crescent Sign-Up Thread

I think there's been a lot of Mafia games going on lately so I figured that it'd be nice to try something new. I think Mornington Crescent is the perfect game to play on EoFF because it's challenging, mentally stimulating and thoroughly unique. First of all, I'd like anyone who knows how to play Mornington Crescent to ensure that if they know how to play, to remain thoroughly in the spirit of the game and to play it properly. Let's not spoil it for other people. There'll be no discussion of the rules in this thread. The only real way to get to grips with the game is by playing it. I'll allow sign-ups until 12pm on Wednesday (GMT).

Edit: May have slightly underestimated demand, so we'll look at keeping sign-ups open until we have sixteen contenders otherwise I think it might be too crowded.

We'll use this thread for signing up and we'll want a decent number of people to take part. Probably eight or more would be enough. It's usually played with only four people, but I'm sure it can easily be adapted. Before the game gets under way, I'll explain fully what variations and rules we'll be using. I know that our very own Psychotic is a strong believer in the Liverpool Variation:

This variation is more refined than the regular game, having been imported from London by stokers on the great steam cargo ships of the Industrial Revolution. When a player is Stymied by his immediate opponent, this is known as Mating, and when a player’s route is blocked, this is known as Docking. If a player is both Mated and Docked, then he is in Heseltine, and forced to miss a turn.

But I think in order to give people a proper chance, we'll avoid those rules for reasons that should be perfectly obvious to everyone. I think the best way to explain the game to you is simply by playing it. I'm also warning you now that if I see any of you even trying to use Thornton’s Controversial 3rd Amendment, I'll call the game off immediately.

Sweet jesus, Liverpool rules?

Totally in. Totally god damn in.

How much time investment will this take?

Heath
07-20-2008, 07:50 PM
Probably not too long. It depends how the game goes. I shouldn't imagine it should take any more than a few days and players can dip in and take moves as they like within reason, otherwise it'd be too difficult to co-ordinate.

I have never played or even heard of this game. It sounds wholly British and will thus be droll. Sign me up.

I'm hesitant to sign up for something I know nothing about. So for now I'm with CL. Maybe next round once I figure out what the heck is going on xD

I'd strongly encourage anyone simply watching to join in. It's the best way to learn how to play. I'll reveal slightly more in a bit.

Well in all honesty, I don't have any clue whatsoever about this, so it would be better to at least watch once to get an idea of whether I want to do it or not. :p

Heath

That's fair enough. I think that it'll all become clear after everyone has taken a few turns. :)

What is this anyway?

Thornton’s Controversial 3rd Amendment
?

DK
07-21-2008, 04:31 AM
If you don't know, don't ask. Heath is particularly passionate and vociferous in his condemnation of that particular amendment and it riles him up to no end. Best not to get him going, honestly.

DK
07-21-2008, 06:37 AM
Yeah it does so we should probably rename it "Liz's face" because that's like the gayest thing at EoFF at the moment tbf

Big D
07-21-2008, 06:45 AM
Mornington Crescent is the best game ever.

Stephen Fry is an expert at it, so I guess that does make it totally gay, but also totally awesome.

Excellent. We have our sixteen players!

Anyone who wants to get a head start might want to check out the rather excellent Mornington Crescent: Rules and Origins by N.F. Stovold, but I'm told it might be out of print. I'll have a think about the rules and variations we'll be using today and hopefully we can get a game started tonight or tomorrow!

Big D
07-21-2008, 01:40 PM
I take it you'll be chairing, Heath? Or should that be Humph?

What would you say to providing a link to a map of the underground, for those of us who want to play competitively but aren't sufficiently familiar with London?

Denmark
07-21-2008, 03:10 PM
That's the first sensible thing anyone's said in this thread so far, D.

Heath

I'll be chairing but I'll also be taking part because I wouldn't want to miss out on the fun. I'll be chairing as impartially as I can, naturally, or - in the words of Humph - until my tranquillizers wear off.

Mornington Crescent was the first station I saw.

PS: The scar on Dumbledore's knee must have been magically inflicted to cause that.

I go away for five days and something happens? Typical. :rolleyes2

Also, I thought I ought to point out that although the East London Line is closed for renovation until 2010, Barrington's Corollary creates a loophole which permits travel on this line during the Expository Phase of play, providing of course that your move doesn't cross any locked junctions. Might a house rule be introduced to fix this?

Think you should make a spot for Cz tbf as he was involved from the planning stages.

I must admit that I did worry about this at the time because Cz did say he wanted to take part during the planning so I'm willing to take backhanders involve him because I really should've added him to the list at the beginning and I don't want to remove anyone. 17 it is.

Flying Mullet
07-21-2008, 10:53 PM
But 17 isn't a nice bracket number.

See if you can find Mornington Crescent before we begin! You should have used a more up to date map - great places like King George V due to the extension of the Docklands Light Railway are missing :p

Jojee
07-22-2008, 01:05 AM
for brackets, you should go 32.

Heath
07-22-2008, 01:13 AM
Well, it's not really brackets as we'll all be involved with play at one time, just a nice round, even number, I suppose!
