Ok go this site and listen to the virtual hair cut (http://weblog.404creative.com/2007/06/03/auditory-illusions-holophonic-recordings/). YOU NEED HEADPHONES FOR THIS OTHERWISE IT WILL NOT WORK!
Also, close your eyes.

Its called holophony, or a holophonic sound recording.
Its recorded using a boom mic stand which resembles a persons head, with two microphones in the ears. Thats all that is needed to create this. The rest as 'Luigi' mentioned is done in your head :D

That is insane. At the very beginning I could have sworn there was somebody in the room behind me knocking on the wall.

I wasn't expecting to be impressed, but whoa. It was actually kind of creepy.

I was afraid it'd be like a blood-curdling scream or something.

I got goose-bumps when he tried to suffocate me by putting my head in a plastic bag.

I had my eyes closed when I listened and felt the same thing.

That was really cool. I jumped when he whispered the name of the algorithm they're using in my ear. xD

I wasn't impressed at first, but then he used the electric razor and it did.

You get the best results if you close your eyes and there are no other sounds in the room, I listened to this a couple months ago, it really is amazing.

Ehmmm, try the womans voice, no idea what shes saying, but she sounds hot!
And the matchbox one made me think I was tied to a chair and after having petrol poured on me, he was like taunting me by walking around and playing with his matches! O_O

Sounds like a repeat of "Mary Jane" and then "Say no more" in a whisper.

Pretty interesting stuff.

Totally awesome, I closed my eyes and thought I was in the barber shop. That one was my favorite.

It's easier to listen to a second time because you're brain isn't as surprised by it all I think. I didn't squirm as much but it is definitely still just as cool.

I make the fourth person to admit to it. xD

And I like the Matchbox one, I mean I can easily understand the left and right thing, that's not hard, what got me was the matchbox shaking up and down, that seems like it would be harder to do.

That's pretty crazy awesome. Also, full agree with this:

I dont its possible to use it for games yet, seeing as how everything has to be recorded this way, and cant be generated or mix and matched.
Also it would mean youd HAVE to play with headphones.

Slothy

Valve could use it while putting you in the characters shoes but giving you no control over where you moved. Otherwise if they wanted to use this they'd have to somehow record everything from every angle the player could possibly be at from the sound source as well as distance and mix and match on the fly. I highly doubt that would ever be feasible, so software simulations are still the best way to go for games.

The one that's at the National University of Singapore scares me! xD The sound of the cars driving by felt so real that I thought a car was gonna run me over. xD I got scared, seriously.
