I didnt buy a PS3 when it came out so i thought i might as well wait until the 80gb came to the UK, its been a long wait but ive pre-ordered it today and it comes out Friday.

So the 80GB doesnt have-
Backwards Compatibility with PS2 Games
Memory Stick Card Readers
SACD Playback
Ethernet Cable
4 USB Ports, (The PS3 80GB model features 2)

Also the guy at the store said that the games are not region free but ive asked other shops and the internet says theyre all region free even the 80gb version.
Does anyone know if its just the UK 80gb that isnt region free?

Also are things that arent included like only 2 USB ports or no ethernet cable really going to make a difference to me?

Thanks:)

I'm very sure that they're not dropping region-free. The new 80gb is basically the 40gb with a bigger hard drive.

As for not having a wired ethernet jack, that only matters if you want to play online but don't have a wireless network available to you. The USB ports are only going to matter really if you want to charge four PS3 controllers at once, but really you can expand that with USB hubs (they're super cheap anyway).

The only thing that kinda kills it for me, personally, is lack of PS2 playback, but if that doesn't bug you it's not a bad deal. Though I'm kind of curious if they're going to do a price drop in the next few months for the holidays to keep up with the 360 drop.

Is this a new 80GB SKU because the 80GB SKU I have has PS2 software compatibility?

Yes, it's the one they announced at E3. Like I said, it's basically the 40gb with an 80gb drive, at the $399 price point. It's different than the previous 80gb SKU which is really evidence that Sony needs names for the SKUs that don't rely on hard drive size.

I got the 80 gig/ MotorStorm pack for Christmas and it has almost all of the features listed that the new 80 gig doesn't have.

Backwards Compatibility with PS2 Games - If you don't have your PS2 still, this'll be an issue.
Memory Stick Card Readers - Not really
SACD Playback - Again, non issue.
Ethernet Cable - You should be able to buy this separately, or if you have wireless, no big deal.
4 USB Ports, (The PS3 80GB model features 2) - If your going to get four controllers, this'll be an inconvenience, since you can only charge two at a time, but otherwise no.

Also, discs are region free.

I don't have my PS2 and was looking forward to playing my old games with PS3. But apparently I've missed my chance. I'm sure I'm a low percentage of potential customers. But Sony's probably losing us regardless. Right now a new PS2 is a better option for me. And it'd be stupid and expensive to buy both

I actually waited to get my 80GB PS3 when it came back to the US with the PS3/metal gear solid 4 combo. I paid $600, same as when they came out around christmas last year, only with a free game. I actually got this one, because i knew it had backwards compatability with both PS2/PS1 games.. Not sure if that is the case there in UK
