What do you name your characters (and vehicles)?

So how do you decide to name your party members?

Most of the time if the choice is given, people rename the main character after themselves. And the main female of the story is named after their significant other at the time. And the rest of the characters get named after close friends and family. (most of this being from a guys point of view while playing, except the latter)

So how do you decide what to name your characters, and also the vehicles and ships you get to rename?

I used to name the main character after myself when I was younger, but now I either leave them on default or I name them after the main characters in my self-writ novel.

lulz factor. Or if I think someone's name is particularly stupid I'll change it to something better. I refuse to call Garnet from FFIX by her other name. It's just ugly and uninspired. Hell even something like Falchion would have been marginally cooler.

I always name the lead male character "Half." I have a list of names I like that I won't bore you with, but I use them on the other characters, trying to match the name to the personality as much as I can. For example, if I have a female thief/assassin type character, I'll go with "Samhain."

Or, if it's a game like Ogre Battle 64 where you get to name dozens of characters, I'll name the males after mythological gods and the females.... either goddesses or, umm... porn stars. Shut up, I was 18-22 once, of course I went through that phase. And what male wouldn't want to watch Miko Lee and Jenna Haze fight ogres? Good God, I am so glad message boards are anonymous.

Defaults, typically. Only exception is III, because those names are terrible. :nonono: For III, in order, I typically go with Camero, Klyde, Val, and Marcus, which incidentally are my I names.

Depends on the game. If it's something like FF1 where the names serve only to tell your party members apart and the characters have no interaction with the story whatsoever, I'll make a sentence:

Oh....
My....
God!!
DIE!!

Or

Sh**he
ad! Gi
mme my
cake!!

Obviously, use of friends' names is a big one for me. I like saving the world with my friends ^^

Vehicles stay as they are.

I always use the defaults if there are some. But if the name is completely horrible, I will change it on occasion.

My friend casey, on the other hand, ALWAYS changes the names for lolz. Always. And they're always the same:

Asshat.
Doofer.
SooooooooCoooooool (how many "o's" are possible).
Deeeeeeez Nutz

Generally stick with the defaults unless I'm specifically having a silly playthrough. Such as naming every character in FFVII Sephiroth. Or following the suggestion of Nemesis the Warlock and calling Amarant "Bumrash" so he introduces himself as "The Flaming Bumrash." I have used friends names before. In my first playthrough of FFI (Dawn of Souls) I named the characters after people that happened to be in #eoff at the time. David was a White Mage.

red XIII= fluffy or fido lol
i named barret mr t. also lol

I rename my FF VI characters to actually give them lowercase letters in their names.

Lately I've been naming the main character after people from my RPG Maker 2003 game. (Eiutah)

Most of the time I will make up names on the spot and use them for my games later down the road (Zacht, Staven, Tiana, Tjara, etc...)

Of course there's the obvious ones...
Cloud=Spikey/Chocobutt/Zack
Barret= Mistah T
RedXIII= Nanaki
Vivi= Puck ("Puck, huh? Kinda funny name... anyway my name's Puck!")
Steiner= Rusty (R-R-RUSTY!? MY NAME IS SIR ADELBERT RUSTY!)
Garnet=Garnet (Hmmm secret identity.... ooh! I know! I'll use my REAL name!)
