So yeah, Disney has released a little teaser (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJl0JJt69ro&feature=related&fmt=18) for it. Thoughts?

Personally, I'm overjoyed to see a return to 2D. And the traditional musical style, with songs the characters actually sing! Composed by Randy Newman! Oh, and did I mention it's written and directed by the same guys as Aladdin and The Little Mermaid?

I'm so excited. :3

Eh, I'm glad for a new 2D princess movie. I'm more waiting for Rapunzel to start making it's pretty face.

I personally miss the old british fairytale disney movies, this one's suppose to be based in New Orleans and such, it just doesn't appeal to me at all. Yeah I'll see it, but I'm not really stoked about it.

I want to see this movie, but I don't have high expectations for it! =O

I can't stop watching the teaser.

I don't think it's going to be quite up there, but it ought to be pretty good nonetheless.

I'm really looking forward to it. As DMKA said the people working on it are very capable, plus Alan Menken is making the music! Also, just the return to 2D and the fact that it takes place in New Orleans (= jazz) are really cool.

I'm less than enthused about he New Orleans setting. I'm excited about a black princess, but I wish they would've gone with some traditional African fairytale or something, like they did when they made their Chinese princess (Mulan).

What really pisses me off about this movie, though, is all the crap Disney is getting for it. She stared out as a chamber maid named Maddy, but Disney was forced to change it because people bitched that apparently that job and name aren't good enough for a black person! Fine for all the white princesses (and one Chinese) that had that same position though. Some are bitching that her butt's too big, or her lips are too big. I thought those were good things?! I know I like 'em.

Just pisses me off that we finally get a black princess but you can't read or watch anything about this movie without someone popping up and complaining that it's racist.

Other than that I'm excited though. I hope they start cranking out 2-Ds again.

I agree. It's annoying, really. But then again, it is a sensitive subject and should be handled as one.. which I'm more than sure that Disney is capable of.

So far the bug is my favorite character. "Ooh! Dat's a catchy title righ' dere!"

Disney did some of the best 2D animation I have ever seen. Ever. I was miffed when I heard they weren't gonna be doing any more and were gonna concentrate on CGI. While the 3D characters are clearly distinguishable as being Disney-style with shadows and a plastic look, it lacks the overall charm and colourful vibrance of their 2D works.

Long may it continue.

Sounds like they actually want just a really tanned white girl o.0

Hope there's no singing..

Actually no. I'm not interested in this movie really. I'm with Avarice. New Orleans doesn't do it for me. So they can ruin it if they want. So I hope Rapunzel is the one they don't ruin with doofy songs...

The premise looks promising, and it'll be interesting to see how this Disney movie will turn out. It's nice to see hand-drawn animation back (and hopefully there will be more movies of that sort in the future).

It's also nice to see the good ol' musical format getting back on its feet, because music (both songs and score) have always been an important part of the Disney experience. It's kind of unfortunate that Menken was replaced by Randy Newman, but I hope that Newman will deliver a soundtrack similar to Cats Don't Dance, because that has been his only decent soundtrack for animated films so far. However, I still keep wondering what Menken might've come up with if he had been allowed to score the movie.

I hope that political correctness doesn't affect the movie too much and that the changes they've made so far will not be repeated later on. Disney has a good team (voices, story and animation), so this might turn into a hit. I just hope that the whole thing won't crumble under all that pressure, but only time will tell what the result will be.

I agree, especially since, I like Maddy. MADDY IS A CUTE NAME! And it would of been perfectly befitting, since it takes place in the 1920s French Quarter (Maddy = Madiline). Even still, despite all the butthurt ultra PC stupidity, I still has mah high hopes. And YAY for Disney FINALLY having a black princess (or hell, a black protagonist period).

Despite everything, I'm still looking forward to this far more than any film in years. :excited:

What I don't understand is that... well if you're going to have a black princess you'd want her to have black FEATURES. Last time I checked, black people had bigger lips, they PRIDE themselves on big butts and big hips. You seriously can't have it all ways, either have your black princess based off what black people look like, or make a white princess and color her black.

I don't think there were asians everywhere complaining about Mulan's tiny boobs, slanted eyes, and round face, if there were, I don't remember them.

Personally, the whole complaining is one thing that really killed my want to see this movie.

Also, my neice is named Madison, we call her Maddy. Yeah she's blonde hair, blue eyes and white as a ghost.

Shlup

Your niece is clearly low-class, Avarice, since Maddy is such a low-class name that it's very use is insulting to the entire black community*.

Ooooh she gonna boycott it. Disney's shakin' in their boots about now.

Never mind the fact that Cinderella was practically a slave for most of the movie and had talking rats to keep her company, that Belle was a prisoner in the Beast's castle, the Snow White was stuck cleaning after seven smelly little homos, that Mulan was a social disaster who almost nobody could stand to be around for five minutes until she became a transvestite, if a black girl is anything short of a God, it's racist right? I hate people.

Eh, that joke got old years ago. Disney wasn't a Nazi (despite what notorious and hilarious books such as Hollywood's Dark Prince might claim). xD

Anyway, the earlier drafts of Tiana did show more "stereotypical" black features such as bigger lips etc. but these were revised after Disney received complaints from people for alleged racist portrayals of blacks. I don't think that the current look of Tiana is worse: yes, she might look more as if she was a white person who was painted black (if compared to the earlier draft in any case), but I don't think the changes affected the character's spirit (at least judging from the sneak peek). I also recognize features of Mulan from her mannerisms, but that is understandable because both Mulan and Tiana were animated by the same guy, Mark Henn.

By the way, speaking of the animators, this article (http://www.laughingplace.com/News-ID512290.asp) (it has some spoilers, btw) shows us which talented animators are working on the film, and I have to say that I'm quite impressed, because most of them are top tier animators who have given us many memorable characters in the past. I'm thrilled to see one of my favourites, Andreas Deja (animator of Jafar, Scar and Lilo among other things), among them and I look forward to seeing the results on screen.

This film acts both as an introduction of the first black Disney princess and it also signals the return of traditional animation. However, this is also somewhat problematic. Disney has to make sure to not offend blacks (that's why they're going through all this hyper PC craze; they just can't afford to get bad word-of-mouth at this stage) and they also have to make profit. If the film doesn't turn out to be successful, Disney might assume that the general public isn't interested in seeing traditionally animated films anymore, and this is one of the reasons why many of Disney's top animators are defending the project and pouring their hearts into it in order to make it into a classic. However, the audience might expect too much from the film and hence it could flop (a sad case being Treasure Planet which is a good film but which was shunned by the general public), or the Disney crew might try to turn it into a classic too desperately and hence they could end up with a confusing mess.

I for one am going to see the film, and I'm hoping to see the return of good stories and traditional animation with musical roots. :)

Oh please, you should've seen the anti-Nazi propaganda that Disney cranked out during the second world war! That stuff got banned!

I don't know if Walt was an anti semite or not or if that's just a rumour. I know he was a blatant sexist though.

I am very excited for this movie :snowman:. The racist stuff is very silly. Jasmine was shown forced to bow to and in chains and went all sex object to trick Jafar and nobody said jack about it. If Jasmine had been black, the universe would have collapsed.

I really hope this movie does well :( I'm going to adopt some children just to force them to see this and make them love it so more movies like this get made.

EDIT-BTW, a black friend of mine said he was offended that people are freaking in his own words, "You know, if these people worked so hard to be seen as intelligent and capable human beings, why do they act like a three year old when people are trying to present them as capable and intelligent human beings? I don't get it. I'm pissed at the black people writing this garbage because after they are finally seen as equals NOBODY can please them."
