Topic: What are you Messenger habits/rules/things etc?

I log on and "Appear Offline" until I see someone I want to talk to. When I'm online, I am always set to "Away" so that I don't get flooded with people saying "HEY!" and the leaving. If someone adds me and I don't know them, I ask who they are. If I still don't know them, or they don't respond, I block them. For the most part, I'll do my best to try to start up a conversation with someone, but I'm quite forward and (brutally/naively) honest which repels a lot of people and stops them talking. Bah, I say! :D

Currently there are 18 people online for me. Nice people, mostly. But I can't be bothered, haha.

Anyway, I think the most common thing is the fake Away/Busy thing. If I'm actually away, I'll put Be Right Back. Otherwise I'm probably there. xD

I always log on as "appear offline" too. Problem is, I think EVERYONE does that... No wonder hardly anyone is online, because no one is online heh.

Yeah, I'm rarely set to appear online any more. :P I just can't be assed. Not that a bunch of people message me when I do appear online, though. xP

I usually sign on as appear offline. If someone add's me and I don't know who they are, I'll add them but have them blocked until I figure out who they are.

If I'm online, I'll appear as such, though often "Away" or "Busy" or some such nonsense. If I'm not online, I'll be not online. It's less confusing that way, methinks.

I have a grand total of 22 people on my AIM list. Of that twenty-two, I talk to two or three of them daily. The rest I have not talked to in months but haven't deleted them because I can't be bothered too. I only set myself to away when I am actually away because the people I talk to don't bother me that much.

One of the people I rarely talk to is a member of this message board but she hates me and hasn't logged on in a long time so she can talk to me. I hate her too.

12+29+3+88+198+61+26+29 = 446. I'm pretty sure I've merged all the duplicates by now, too!

I sometimes forget to take my away message off, but if I'm on-line, you can message me and be sure I'll see it at some point! But not too many people msg me ;.; stu and peegies and ouch mostly!

I like to punish people who do that by inviting them to mass conversations. DON'T ABUSE THE AWAY BUTTON!

That is a fantastic idea. <3 I hate people who abuse the Away button. It's like, if you don't want to talk to people, don't clutter up their MSN lists.

I am online 24/7, though set to Sleep/Class/whatever when I'm not around. I never do any "Appear Offline" crap to see if there are people on who I do/do not want to talk to, but since I actually talk to very few people anyway, it's hardly important.

I've made up a system, it's actually quite clever imo:

I put 'Online' if I'm online
I put 'Away' if I'm away
I put 'Busy' if I'm busy
I put 'Be right back' if I'll be right back
If I actually don't want to talk to anyone, I log off

If I'm playing some online game and can't reply quickly it'll say Busy. If you're really lucky you might see it say "Out to lunch" sometimes.

I'm only ever really on MSN at work, where it automatically switches me over to "busy" depending on the programs I'm using. Chances are though, that I'm not actually busy and will quite happily talk to anyone that messages me. :p

I am appearing offline 70% of the time because when I go on msn I usually have a specific person (or persons) to contact :\

Other than that, I don't really use the status options.

Unless I'm avoiding someone, I'm usually online with the available message of "Almost, but not quite, entirely unlike tea." though if I'm upset it will be "Life! Don't talk to me about life!" if I'm confused or of some strange, mixed emotion, it will be "The Guide is definitive. Reality is frequently inaccurate." If I'm on between 3AM and 4AM it might read "Nocturnal and vaguely humanoid".

I have away messages for homework, busy, and actually away, though I rarely use the last; if I'm away, my computer is sleeping.

I talk to everyone who talks to me.

Get Messenger Plus (http://www.msgpluslive.net/download/) and the Mess Patch. (http://www.mess.be/) (Especially the Mess patch, since you can use it to patch out all the crappy features you never use.)

My husband usually would always be on away. Usually because he may sign on messenger but there's a very good chance he's on the internet to do other things than talk.

Yeah, I guess people figure if you sign on no matter what, you're there to talk. That's why I just go appear offline when I don't want to talk, because it seems that no one accepts that a person on busy may be busy, or a person away may be away.

What's even better though, is that when my husband would be on Away, he'd have a message next to his name like "Sleeping" and then turn off the sound and the monitor and then when we wake up, he turns it on and has like 6 million messages. Do they not think he's sleeping?

That's one reason I like AIM, because it will tell how long someone's been idle. With MSN they could go "Well I didn't know when you went to sleep" but on AIM you could just go "Dude, it says "I'm sleeping" not only that but I've been idle for 8 hours, that means I haven't touched this computer for 8 hours, seriously do you think I was going to respond."

With MSN, there is no idle time, so people just naturally assume your on, even if you say you're not near the computer or anything. I think all messengers should incorporate the idle timer because it makes things less of a hassel.

If you're too lazy to sign off, duh :p

I haven't been on MSN much lately but I do get on every now and then. I appear offline when I'm avoiding someone or when I feel like playing ghosty. If I'm on "away" it means I'm away from the computer and will be for a long time. "Busy" is only put up if I'm on skype and I set the window to full-screen. "Be right back" if I'm going to the bathroom or getting a quick snack.

Yeah, that's about it.

Oh, and I'm ALWAYS signed into skype, because I use it every day. AIM, I'm barely on as it doesn't work for me. Trillian won't connect for me anymore either, so I suppose it's time to find a new program that's similar so I can sign into all my messengers at once and not have a clutter of windows.

You're clearly very stupid. "I don't talk to people because I can't be bothered" does not mean "I don't talk to people because I am a better person than them". Try to look into what people say a little less. Maybe then you won't come across as such an ass. Or maybe you will. You might just be an assy person, but I choose not to believe that until I've read more of your posts.

Notice how I don't judge you until I've gotten a better read of you? Shocking, isn't it?

I have a habit of just leaving half way through a conversation. I just cba putting 'brb' on every convo so I just leave, not even changing the status sometimes, so when I come back the other person has usually given up and signed off. That tickles me. If you actually wait, I will come back eventually, I'm usually downstairs watching TV or in the shower.

I always sign in as offline, just so I can see if there's anyone online worth talking to. If there is I'll change to online, if not then I sign out.

There's only one or two people that I actually will sign in purposely to talk to.

If I'm online, then I will be there almost all the time. Sometimes if I'm away, I don't bother changing my status. Not that it matters, I don't talk to anyone anyway. Nobody's gonna be wondering why I'm not answering, so I just leave. :p

I hate it when people just have their away status on for the sake of it, especially if it's someone I enjoy talking to. I often just have to take a leap of faith and talk to them, and hope they're around. xD
