Eyes on Plays Final Fantasy IV!

We've all been anxiously waiting to play FFIV (I know I have), and with the release of the European DS game as of yesterday, now we can. Due to this late release date, Eyes on Plays will be extended into October. Probably October 10th. This might change though so keep an eye on this post.


Anyways, this is it! Here is the obligatory stuff.


Eyes on Plays Final Fantasy Fanatsy IV Rules


When you begin the game, please post a digital camera picture or a screenshot in this thread of your game that has your party clearly visible on the screen. You MUST do this to be eligible for participation in the Challenges; we have to be able to see the names, classes, etc. of your party so we can compare it to your finishing party, and make sure you don't just stick in a memory card or load up a save state without putting in the effort.
That's right, you must also post a picture from the END of the game in this thread with your same party being displayed. This way we can confirm whether or not you met the criteria for any/all of the challenges: what level your party is, what class they are, etc.
You CAN play the game on an emulator, and you CAN give us a screenshot of that. Just don't go talking about where you got the rom (http://www.eyesonff.com/ffmq/ffmq.rar), mmkay? ADDENDUM: Also, don't go using frameskip on us. That's just plain wrong.
You can achieve as many challenges as you want, and yes, you will be able to show off your winnings in some manner once this event is over.



I myself have not played FFIV before so the following challenges may change if another mod who knows better decides to change them. Again, keep an eye on this post.

Gold Star Challenges

* Obtain all call monsters
* Obtain pink tail
* Level 99 Dark Knight Cecil
* Single character (Cecil)
* For non-GBA(and I'm not sure about DS) versions:
LV 99 Palom, Poram, Yang, Cid, Edward or Tellah

Silver Star Challenges

* Two front/three back always formation
* Paladin Cecil only allowed to equip bows
* For non-GBA(and I'm not sure about DS) versions:
LV 99 Fusoya
* Completion of game

Wheee! I'ma play the GBA version. According to my other save file it took me about 11 hours to get to the moon, which is pretty close to the end of the game, so I'm not expecting this to be too time consuming. xP Those of you who can't run, though, will probably take a bit longer. :P

This one of my favorite games of all time. I've probably played it more times than any other game. I've played SNES, PS, and GBA versions. This time I will try the DS version, which looks awesome.

Of the challenges I will try for the all call monsters and pink tail ones. I don't want to do any of the restrictive ones since this is my first playthrough of this version.

Carrying on we make it through a gnarly cave and fight with a relative of Kishi.

After some plot points about some guy named Golbez who is trying to usurp our heroes of being the biggest bad asses in the world, we carry on until DD leaves us and a new ally joins us.

After Lancea mops the floor with Leeza, using his new skills of Evil Bad Ass, a villain bad ass shows up. Golbez, who is like Leeza + Kain + everyone else combined. Golbez quickly makes quick work of the whole party with his superior awesome skills. And before he leaves he takes KoShia as a trophy!

The game is hard, but well balanced meaning that the difficulty is compensated by a lot of fun in exploring the dungeons. Too bad that not being able to change names lowers the degree of customization you can give to games.

Well then, last time on <s>Lost</s> FF IV. Our heroes were attacked by Leviathan after getting ready to mount an assault against Golbez. Leeza was left stranded.

After some exploration, Leeza realizes she has appeared at Mysidia, that place full of mages she torched at the start of the game. Ya this'll go over real well.

In order to stop Golbez from stealing the last crystal, the team decides to go to his crib while he's away and steal the ones he has already taken. Clever stuff.

During the fight with one of his minions, the evil doctor Lugaborg who turns innocent people into monsters (typical german stereotyping), I totally forgot to take a screenshot until the very end.

Eventually, I met up with the beast.

The Octommamoth hurt for a little bit, but all I had to use was one potion and I swiftly finished it off with a 500 Damage Critical. Bye Kishi!

After leaving the cave, I'm greeted with the pleasant site of watching a weak kingdom get completely OWNed by the Red Wings. Their entire force wiped out with a few bombs.

Anyway, some sissy in the castle told me that if we steal this Antlion's egg, its own flesh and blood, it's SEED, it won't attack us and it'll heal my girlfriend. Total BS. But since I'm human and I like swords, I decided killing it would be pretty nice.

I set the focus on my camera to "macro". Macro shots are extremely close shots. This way I can take clean pictures of the screen. I don't know what happens when you take pics with a camera phone, but mine has the option as far as I can remember. You seem to take pictures of your TV though. A good camera with auto focus ought to do the trick.




Sorry for the extremely small pictures. If it's an inconvenience, just tell me. Anyway, I'll keep ya'll posted, since I had to restart I'm gonna have to high step it to Fabul xD
If you're using an emulator, you should be able to stretch the window and make it bigger without losing quality. Which emulator are you using?

Note to anyone doing solo Cecil. I've tried it myself and there was a point where I found it impossible to get any further. When you have to go to the Sealed Caved in the Underworld there's monsters there that can kill you consistently in two turns. Even after grinding excessively I still couldn't take them down in two rounds. So if you manage to get that far and past that section then kudos to you.

My camera works like this: when you press the button lightly, it focuses. When wou press the button more firmly, it takes the shot. When picturing a static subject like a DS screen I always check that the camera's well in focus before taking the picture.

Actually it's the Emulator that's taking the screenshots, not the [ PrtScrn ] Button. ( I play on x2 window size, but that doesn't effect the screenshot. )

If you hate the smallness then I'll start manually taking screenshots, but you're gonna have to bear with me for a while--I already have some continuing from where I left off to the Fabul invasion, but pretty much anything after Leviathan will be larger from now on. :D

Small screenshots are no problem for me. But some emulators only stretch the window like the one you are using now, others actually augment the number of pixels used to render the graphics, which in turn lets you take bigger screenshots. One such emulator for the SNES is ZSNES. I'm not aware if any GBA emulator does that though.

I was out again today, but I managed to get some playing done. I didn't have my camera with me, so I never got a picture of Cid saying "First my airship and now my Hobag." That's very sad.

First shot is of the party at the final save point. Other one is a crumbling last boss. Finally took Zeromus down after 3 tries. Going straight through the game and skipping The Land of Summoned Monsters and Bahamut's Cave left me gimped compared to a normal playthrough. Rydia is extra baggage in the fight anyway since she has crazy low HP and can't cast damaging spells without being countered with Nuke. Being the hot chick she is, I left her face-down after the first round of banging. Time of 10 hours 30 minutes right before the final battle. Yay! :choc2:

So we take a key that will apparently lead us to the underworld that needs to be used at a certain spot. After about 20 minutes we give up and decide to chuck the key down some well and go onto plan B, dig a hole until we reach the underworld.

Before we get to talk to the king, we must fight the queen, who is difficult until you cast reflect onto her, so she continually casts Armor and cure3 on your team and makes it impossible for you to lose.

Victory in this battle awards us with the Asura summon, which when called, casts life or cure3 on your team. Completely useless then.

Mom Bomb has been replaced with the Golbez fight after getting Rydia back. How the heck are you supposed to beat that guy with 2 characters? I can't Phoenix down Rosa because his next -ra spell just kills her. I wish I had the item that casts reflect. It would be so easy. :(

We then headed into a rather boring cave except for the fact that the walls and doors were really monsters trying to eat us! We go to the moon and wander around in the vacuum of space perfectly fine. We eventually go into the only structure on the entirety of the moon where we meet a man inside there....a mysterious old man...

Okay after a long ordeal ( sorry Leeza ) I finally managed to record the Scarmiglione fight! But, to my surprise ( not really ) I clicked "Finish Video" in WMM and it seems to have frozen up. Let's all pray that it works and now that I know what to do, the others should come a lot faster. ( And hopefully I'll play a lot more. )

Indeed. But it's not over yet!

After saving the world our heroes went on to lead rich fulfilling lives.

Leeza started the first ever school for bad asses and later burned down Mysidia and Mt. Ordeals for revenge on taking her bad ass Dark Knight skills away.

Lancea went on to star in several other games as the bad ass rival to the hero. One day however while performing a shoot, he jumped up too high and was caught in the turbines of a 747. He will be missed....in pieces. :(

Momiji went on to become a pop culture idol throughout the world, eventually using her summoned powers to conquer all of the Bahamas.

DD is still dead.

Kaiser went on to redesign the giant of Ba-bil and create a whole new line of weaponry based on giant robot technology. Eventually these new weapons were used to conquer the dwarves who had decided to scrap all their weapons.

KoShia and Leeza went out for a while longer, but eventually broke up. Looking for real work KoShia became a commercial pilot and flew 747's all day. Poor Lancea. :(

Heath left Mysidia before Leeza came and destroyed it, and found his way to Troia. He found the pub with all the dancers and became the manager of the joint. Heath can be found spending his days relaxing with about 12 Jess recolors.

Rubah went on to steal the Lunar Whale and created the worlds first fast food delivery service. She called it MFC, Mysidian Fried Chocobo.

GoBo returned to rebuild his kingdom, and before ascending the throne it was found out he was really a chocobo in a human disguise. He was cast out and eventually picked up by Rubah...Yum. :choc2:

NoName went on to become a martial arts sensation bigger then Jet Li, Jackie Chan, and Bruce Lee combined. To date he has stared in on over 2,363,473 martial arts movies. NoName eventually died when he said he was bigger then Chuck Norris. Cause of death was decapitation through round house kick to the head. :(

rXp went on to star in every single ninja related game and movie in history. He never did hook up with Momiji though. :(

qwerty went back to the moon and helped convert it into a Death Star, then left Earth's orbit to go do battle with Space Nazi's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4KEueJnsu80).

After defeating the dastardly Scarmiglione, our Hero had reached the summit of Mt. Ordeals and supposedly gained unimaginable power! Strong enough to defeat Golbez right?

WRONG.

After going along the Devil Road to Baron, he decided it was time to test this power on some cronies in a bar. His attack animation even looks cooler! But, to my surprise, it was less damage than when he was a follower of the Darkness.

The end! I beat this game in about 23 hours and 40 minutes :) Less than 24 hours and that wasn't even a speed playthrough. I got all the extra summons, best weapons and everything.

Your time is under 17 hours just before Zeromus. Did you leave the game running for 6-7 hours just to make sure you were prepared for the final battle?

Video Game time vs Real World time. Most earlier FFs do that and probably later but I never checked. I always wondered what part of the game the timer didn't track. The transition between fights? Opening menus? I have no idea, but they're never accurate. There were also some little breaks in there for food, moderating here and stuffs.

So yeah, I really enjoyed this more than I thought I was going to. I still hate FFIV's inventory system, but it's a jolly fun game and definitely one of the more challenging Final Fantasy games, though it looks like I had a pretty easy time compared to you people on the DS. I leveled Cecil to 52 and then it was no problem with just him and Rydia. :)

I think my average FFIV playthroughs were around 20-24 hours on the in-game clock when I found everything in game. I'm not sure about FFV, but FFVI is 30-40, depending upon how much leveling and spell teaching you do with your characters. I want to say FFVII is 40-50 hours and it's just getting longer from there.

Anything that isn't part of the main story is a sidequest, i.e. Land of Summoned Monsters, Sylph Cave, Bahamut, etc...

The only way I've won most boss battles is strategy. And slow, always spam a boss with slow.
Update: At giant of Babil, where my ass was rather promptly kicked. Going back to level and whatnot.

I was finally able to beat the game by a stroke of pure luck (Kain was Jumping while Zeromus launched Meteor, killing the rest of the party, and when he came down he gave the decisive strike). Nice!

If you give Cecil the draw attack augment and then cast reflect on him. All the battles with the doors are a breeze.

So a character with enough Spirit can not be killed by Ninth dimension...? That never happened to me once. I thought it was instant death and that it was all about being fast. :o

Hey all, I am still trying to finish this game. I'm at the final battle with Zeromus and nothing is happening. I've been trying to fight him for half an hour already but all I managed to do was load everyone up with Haste, Blink, Shell, Protect, Reflect and anything else I could think of. All of my attacks on him net a 0 and he just floats there and sputters a bit but is not attacking. Isn't he supposed to blast me with something by now? Or is he supposed to just float there and then hit me when I'm getting all bored of attacking him with nothing happening? Do I have some sort of glitch here right at the end of the game? I've been playing it all fucking day so that I can get on to FFV so it would really piss me off if I have a glitch!

Have you used The Crystal on him yet? This first form exists only so you can steal Dark Matter, and for an attempt at the makers to introduce cutscenery into a battle.

If all else fails, levelgrind a lot near the last save point. I had a lot of trouble with Zeromus before doing that.

Then again, you're playing the DS version-- I haven't. So I don't know how hard it is in comparison. FFIV is pretty cruel in general, though. :p

Not really. Everyone else seemed to manage at far less than that. :) I was at 94 though by the time I finished because you level up pretty quick in there.
