How easily do you recognise sarcasm on the forums?

I think I do it pretty well e.g. I knew that Bunny guy was being sarcastic from his first post, but other people didnt realise it.

It can be hard to tell sometimes.

^(I was being sarcastic there)

I'm only sarcastic half the time. I do appreciate being made an example of.

I wonder if Lychon was being sarcastic the whole time before he got banned. I doubt it, though. Indeed, it's hard to detect sarcasm on the net nowadays, that's why it's not a good idea to become sarcastic in certain situations.

However, it certainly would be easier to detect sarcasm if they have used some random smilies. Or, another way to detect sarcasm is to check whether were they being logical or not towards specific topics.

I can't see sarcasm online, but it's obvious IRL. I'm also quite skilled at being sarcastic, I use it to my advantage to take stabs at people without them knowing :D

Oh, and sometimes smilies can make sarcasm easier to see. (My whole post wasn't sarcastic, BTW)

I can tell that's sarcasm. Or is it? Oh god, the internet sucks :D

I usually word things in a way where if it's NOT sarcasm, then it'll look like I'm just being a super mega-asshole.

If anyone thinks I'm just being a super mega-asshole, you know.. just ride with that thought and have fun.

Avarice-ness, you think you can get on the internet with a cell phone while you're delivering your baby and post a thread about it while it's happening?

Sure why not?

Not only will I make a post, but I'll even make a thread about the process of being in massive pain and how it's quite amazing that I'm even able to type on my cell phone while being in it.

It will be the most epic thread EVER.

I wouldn't say I'm particularly sarcastic, but in online conversations I tend to punctuate a lot of my statements with the ':P' symbol to show that I'm not entirely serious about whatever I just said. It's more effective on MSN messenger since that symbol is kind of a goofy smiling face.

I have trouble detecting sarcasm from people online that I don't know. I've learned not to overestimate the intelligence of the anonymous masses.

I have kind of a hard time detecting sarcasm, if it's out of character of someone to use it. But generally, Roto/Dan/Bunny, yeah. I'm onto your sarcasm, boys.

I prefer satire

I don't mean to generalise, but I found that most Americans tend not to catch sarcasm online. I guess we Brits have it down to a T though.

I used to think sarcasm was awesome cool when I was about twelve, but it's not very clever. It's extremely irritating when people do nothing except for sarcasm for extended periods of time. If a more humourous and intelligent piss taking mechanism can be employed, then it should.

I really wanted to believe the best of Bunnies x) I knew it was most likely that she was a troll, but just in case she was a sensitive n00blet that may one day have grown into a valuable member, I wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt.

I can appreciate this sentiment for the most part.
However, I don't think I can tell when I'm being sarcastic anymore.

Thanks a lot, man! I really appreciate your opinion.

IRL, people cant tell I'm being sarcastic half the time. Which makes me sound stupid. :(

I need sarcasm to survive. My sarcasm seems to be oriented on hyperbole rather than simply stressing a word in a sentence. ("Yeah, THAT'll work." :rolleyes2")

Sarcasm is so ridiculously hard to convey on the internets.

Pretty easily I think.. or at least I hope! :shifty:

It can be somewhat hard to detect sometimes, but most of the times it's pretty obvious.
