View Full Version : Patriot Day Dilemma

So today is Patriot Day. You know, the day those planes crashed into those buildings in New York and killed thousands of Americans?

Do you even care?!?!?

I'm less than enthused myself. The CEO of my company has ORDERED US ALL to wear red, white and blue today. Unfortunately, I don't have any combination of clothing that would allow me to wear red, white and blue and stay in business formal dress. So I'm kind of worried. :\

So umm...yeah, I dunno, what do you think of Patriot Day?

Incoming train wreck lol

A day of rememberance I guess.

All I remember about 9/11 was standing on the 20 yard line practicing marching band formations when our band teacher told us what happened.

I guess it affected people differently because it's really became "just another day" with me.

The only thing that annoys me, are people making profit off of today and those wanting to make it a holiday for like.. celebration rememberance type deal.

Oh and the fact that everyone is telling me if my daughter is born today I should change her name to something patriotic.
I understand my husbands in the army, but I'm not patriotic and hell neither is he, we also chose her name 5 months ago, I'm not going to change it just because she's born on Sept 11th. I doubt she'll be born today anyways.

It was a terrible thing which happened seven years ago. No question about it. But dressing it up in "RAH RAH RAH AREN'T WE GREAT" flag-waving does a disservice to those who died. When people can just throw on a badge pin or a certain color of clothing and think that they've shown due respect, they're less likely to take the time to really think about what happened. It's a sad case of reductionism, but such is the tendancy of patriotism.

I'm not against a day of remembrance. I'm just confused as to why patriotism/US is the focus instead of those who died.

Edit: Also, more generally on accidents with mass deaths: It's kind of sad that countries as a whole put more worth in the lives of their countrymen than those of foreigners. For example, when the 2004 tsunamis in Indian Ocean occurred, all the headlines in Sweden told not of how many had died/disappeared, but of how many Swedish people were confirmed dead or missing.

You should wear a white shirt, blue shorts and red shoes and socks so that you represent the Russian Federation.

Or wear a Union Jack shirt. That's red white and blue.

Or better yet call in sick. Sick of the omnipresence of 9/11.

Yeah, that bothers me. With wars, too. News headlines so "OH A BAZILLION AMERICAN HEROES DEAD WHAT A TRAGEDY" but they ignore that the other side is losing a whole lot more than that.

Today is a great day because I got an external hard drive with a terabyte of space on it and I am very pleased with this turn of events.

I wouldn't mind it becoming a holiday if I get the day off. :D

Fun fact: This is my 2 year join-date anniversary. WHY WASN'T I MORE PATRIOTIC WITH MY NAME! :mad2: I'M ANTI-AMERICAN.
