View Full Version : Favourite comics without super heroes

What are yours? Mine are as follows:

Sandman by Neil Gaiman - Probably the only comic book series I like more than Watchmen. It's seriously fantastic. It follows the character Dream, one of the "Endless" who are basically gods. Dream is the Endless of dreams and stories, and as such, a lot of the comics are stories about other characters in other situations, with Dream himself making only a small appearance. It's one of the most amazing things ever written and everyone needs to read it.

Strange Embrace by David Hine - This was surprisingly great. It's kind of a story within a story within a story. It starts off being about a boy who works at his parents' store, and moves on to follow the life story of a telepath he meets, and then becomes the story of one old man whose mind the telepath once read. It's pretty creepy and the climax of the story will send chills down your spine. It's only an eight issue mini series, and once you start reading it, it's difficult to stop before you hit the end. This is another one that comes highly recommended.

Y - the Last Man by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra - This is about the last man on earth, after every other male (human or animal) has died, leaving only women, him and his male monkey. Of course, being the only man left, he's incredibly important and humanity's only chance to repopulate the earth. Definitely worth checking out.

Does it have to be in traditional comic book form?

If not, My favorite comic ever is Calvin and Hobbes. Though that might be diqualified because Calvin is Stupendous Man.

I also like Dilbert, if only for the Dogbert.

There's no such thing :mad2: Superheroes or gtfo.

Oh, I like Runaways I guess. They have powers and aliases but no official team name, and they don't really do superhero stuff. I'm not sure if they count or not. Buffy Season 8? Sure, why not.

Does Scott Pilgrim count? It gets rather surreal and there are fight scenes but no superheroes as such. It's very funny, full of nicely sarcastic characters (Wallace Wells!) and I love all the little music references.

Agreed. One of the best things I've ever read; comic or otherwise.

Been meaning to check out Y the Last Man for a long time. I think I may have to pick up the first trade before long.

Transmetropolitan, by Warren Ellis and Darick Robertson. Big surprise, huh? From gross-out humour, through political shenanigans, to personal tragedies, Ellis' Hunter S. Thompson-style character takes us on a wild ride through a futuristic New York, now known colloquially as The City. It's just a seriously great read, from start to finish.

Hitman, by Garth Ennis and John McCrea. Technically, the main character has powers, and there are the occasionaly superhero appearances (Batman, Catwoman, Etrigan, Green Lantern, Lobo and Superman all show up at some point in the series), but they're not common and the series really isn't about that (besides, Sandman has superheroes in it too, so nyer =P). What it is about though, is friendship and loyalty, bred in the face of violence, and the harsh realities of living such a lifestyle. Oh, and clubbing baby seals.

The Punisher, v3 to v5 #60, by Garth Ennis and various artists. Again, cameos from some more traditional of Marvels superheroes (Spider-Man, Daredevil and Wolverine, to be precise), but mostly Ennis' long run writing Frank Castle has been focused on dealing with more real-world based crime, especially v5, published on the Marvel Max line. The Punisher will never be written better than this, I swear it.

I actually enjoyed Lucifer, by Mike Carey, the spin-off from Sandman, a lot more than the base series, though that certainly had its own highpoints too. Definitely worth recommending I think.

Though what I'm a huge fan of, is the whole layperson's view of the superhero world subgenre, stuff like Marvels, Gotham Central, etc. Superheroes are often too idealised (Superman), or too self-involved (Spider-Man), but it's the human element that often ties these series together. What would Superman be without Lois Lane? What would Spider-Man be without <s>Mary-Jane</s> Aunt May? It's always the "normal" characters that are the far more interesting I find, and the ones that find themselves inside worlds with such bizarre superheroes can have some very interesting tales to tell.

Preacher, or Sin City.

Also, I randomly happened upon this zombie comic called Pieces for Mom: A Tale of the Undead recently. Which I recommend. It's short and fun, but hard to find. If anyone wants it, I'll send it over AIM or whatever.

Batman. Unless you count being obscenely rich as a super power.

Just because he doesn't have super powers, that doesn't mean he's not a super hero. xP

My favrotie comics minus superheroes would have to be Sinfest, Nuklear Power, and VG Cats. Garfield minus Garfield is hilarious too. John seems even more like a depressed lunatic.

Look what part of his body his eyes are focused on in the second panel garfield minus garfield (http://garfieldminusgarfield.net/post/26271173)

If you aren't reading Fables (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fables_(comic)), you need to start immediately.

It has the best story of any currently ongoing comic I've read (including superhero ones) and the visuals (especially the covers, which are the best of any comic I've ever seen) are absolutely beautiful.

Fables was awesome until the whole Adversary plot overtook the book, killing my enjoyment of it. I still think it was a crappy reveal, but irregardless, the story has only gotten worse and worse since then.

It's still better than the spinoff though, Jack of Fables.
