I've been meaning to get back into the groove of things anime-wise. I've taken a break from the scene and outside of keeping in touch with a few of the more long winded and commercially successful series (Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Death Note... etc.) out there I can safely say I am out of the loop.

Recently, a friend brought back my senses by lending me Galaxy Railways and as huge Leji Matsumoto fan, it brought back some interest into the anime scene.

But I find it boring to just ask for some suggestions and I've always been pretty good about choosing good series. Instead I want you to warn me about series that are just downright terrible. I don't generally run into bad anime too much but then again I'm pretty picky. About the only series I can say I never cared for were Blue Gender (bad Starship Troopers knock off), Onegai Teacher (The Standstills!!!), Fushugi Yugi (Miyaka...), and S-CRY-ed (just bad...)

So what series do you feel is best for an avid anime fan to avoid in the future?

I kind of gave up one anime about a year ago but here are some I've watched in the last five years that were highly recommended but were, in fact, not very good:

Saikano/She: The Ultimate Weapon
Rahxephon
Galaxy Angel
Haibane Renmei

Eiken. It's just... god, words can't even describe how terrible it is.

And Haibane Renmei is awesome, you whorebag. >=|

So is S-Cry-ed! :mad2:

Though Blue Seed, Blue Gender, any gundam that isn't G or Wing, and FLCL. (Yes, you ahve probably seen it and loved it, jsut like the rest of the anime community.I still hate it though. :P)

And to be different, I will suggest to you a good anime movie you are not likely to ever see suggested here, Voices of a Distant Star. :p

Unless I'm reading this backwards, you're saying that people should avoid Gundam shows that are not G Gundam or Gundam Wing, which are probably the <img src="http://forums.eyesonff.com/images/smilies/rpg_009.gif" alt="skull" /><img src="http://forums.eyesonff.com/images/smilies/rpg_009.gif" alt="skull" /><img src="http://forums.eyesonff.com/images/smilies/rpg_009.gif" alt="skull" /><img src="http://forums.eyesonff.com/images/smilies/rpg_009.gif" alt="skull" />tiest full-length Gundam series out there. I mean, at least G Gundam has some goofiness and originality to it, but there's no saving Gundam Wing. It's cliche adolescent garbage.

I'll throw Rurouni Kenshin out there. Fun characters, and probably 20 or 30 good episodes. The rest is lame and predictable filler.

I can't say I particulary cared for Saikano (specially its ending, am I the only person who feels the series should have ended two episodes early?) and I did enjoy Rahxephon if only cause it starts off as a blatant Evangelion rip-off (even copying scenes directly from the series) and then becomes its own thing as it goes along. I actually enjoyed it. I'll try to stay clear of Galaxy Angel but Haibane Renmei? That was anime gold baby :p

So is S-Cry-ed! :mad2:
Its not cheesy enough to be funny, its not serious enough to be interesting or thought provoking. Its just bad. The last battle between the two leads was also completely unnecessary :p

I have seen it and loved it. I also enjoyed this director's follow up film "The Place Promised in our Dreams". Both were really good and I recommend them to everyone. :)

I can't say I'm fond of of the U.C. timeline and despite Wing being an alternative telling of the original Gundam and its movie "Char's Counterattack" I actually like Wing for its politics and its focus on soldiers in warfare.

Except for Wing and G, I think the only Gundams I ever liked were War in the Pocket and Stardust Memory. Seed is ok but its set-up is way too long (same problem with original) and by then, Cartoon Network started airing it at 3am where I was and then decided that no one liked it and took it off the air. :rolleyes2

This does remind me of another series I didn't like... Gundam 08th MS Team. Though it easily has the best Mobile Suit battles of almost any Gundam I've seen, its plot and cast are terrible. Its easily the worst telling of "Romeo and Juliet" I've ever seen. Even having the voice talents of one of Japan's top female Voice Actresses couldn't save it.

As for Kenshin... that's pretty spot on, no real point watching it after the Kyoto story arc.

Well, Street Fighter II V is pretty bad. But it's so cheesy you may actually have fun with it.

I thought Mahoromatic was pretty terrible outside of an episode or two that was inexplicably quality.

I found the opposite. I really liked the first 5 or so episodes but as the series went on it started to become more and more convoluted until it had became mindless nonsense by the end. I'm still amazed that they managed to come up with an ending even worse then Evangelion's.

You haven't watched Gasaraki have you? That is a series that becomes a convulated mess with a more WTF?! ending than Eva and Rahxephon. Not to mention its incredibly slow pace and dry dialogue makes it so only the most dedicated and deranged will ever see it to its end.

I understand its a difficult series to get into and the plot just gets crazier as the series goes but I love alot of the ideas that start to come about in it. Its far from perfect though.

I already know to avoid Peach Girl as I was not too impressed by the premise or the plot summary I read for the first few manga. I can't say Mahoromatic appeals to me but I always felt if I met someone who actually has it, I would watch a few episodes to see how I feel. The way I see Mahoromatic, it's a satire of overused anime clichés-- from maids to androids/robots to oversized breasts. When you look at it that way, it's excellent.

Hmm lets see.... I hated with much much hate that evagenalon (spelling?) show I can't watch 2 seconds of it. I also hated final fantasy unlimited like how I hated spirirts within. Orphan wasn't very good (well the voice acting at least) I hated wedding peach cause it's a sailor moon rip off. Code geass bored me I hated Rahxephonand I really REALLY hate Blood + I only watched 1-24 just for Haji and David and I really hated the movie blood that took place before it cause Saya looked like a dirty little beaner that had an attitude problem. I didn't like most of the gundums, well pretty much them all besides seed. Geeze I'm a hater. I probably got tons more that I can't think of.

I actually liked Gasaraki a lot. I would have liked to see more of Meth though. And there's this strange parallel between the Gowa family and the Boeuvle family from FFT.

I remember in my anime club watching Digital Devil, just for the title. That's about all that's good about it. As far as Gundam goes, Double Zeta is about the worst. War in the Pocket rules, but I can see why it's not popular: it focuses on the impact of war on a few people instead of trying for an epic space opera.

I have issues with Genocyber and Fist of the North Star, not for the writing, which was generally good, but for the excessive graphic violence. The strange thing is I love horror but hate gore.

What's with all the Galaxy Angel hate?

I know it isn't the deepest or most linear anime out there but the random humour and the cuteness make up for it. Unless you don't appreciate that either. I personally don't get how anyone could hate the random humour in Galaxy Angel (even though I'm a really serious person in general I actually can't help smiling at the ridiculous antics in Galaxy Angel).

I guess if you're after anime with really deep storylines that make sense it's understandable. Otherwise, I'm sure that most people would enjoy watching Galaxy Angel.

SoulTaker had such potential and then it broke one of my story rules. Your major plot twist can't involve Atlantis (I'm looking at you Escaflowne) or aliens... It had such potential to be a cool mystical occult series and instead its a psychedelic alien-fest

I guess the most recent disappointment I can think of is Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu - it looks great at times with the animation and art styles, and some of the references to other series is a nicety, but the amount of pointless stereotypical characters and scenes, and somewhat generic storyline behind the initial concept ruined it :p

cl_out, you expected something good out of it? The recent seasons have been loaded with moe-blob shows, and I fail to see why this one would be exceptional in any regard. We all knew from the start there couldn't have been a School Days ending. The German dude pissed me off, though.

I would recommend the Pokemon anime to not be seen, but with a qualification. It's a crudely animated half-hour commercial for the games with three main protagonists who are uninteresting and dull. But it has one redeeming feature: Team Rocket. But for the fact that those loveable goofballs are in there are the only reason I watched it at all. So watch just the episodes where they're the main focus.

I'm a fan of Rachael Lillis, but I've discovered in other anime she can only do two voices: her grown-up 'Jessie' voice and her little-girl 'Misty' voice.
