Hey all. After I ace my A levels, I'll be heading off to uni. to study Philosophy (probably of Mind, because it's awesome).

Anyway, my list so far is (with the current Top 5 in bold):

Sheffield - AAB
St. Andrew's - AAB
Manchester - ABB
Leeds - ABB
Edinburgh - BBB
King's - ABB
Cardiff - BBB
Aberdeen - CCC

That's the advised list so far, which I am about to start checking out in the next few days. Basically, if anyone went or goes to any of those unis or, even better, took Philosophy at one of those unis, would you mind telling me about it? What's the place like? What's the surrounding area like? Your opinion of the staff? etc. etc.

Cheers very much.

I'm currently studying abroad at the University of Edinburgh, and it's altogether a most delightful place. I don't know anything about the philosophy department, but the actual city of Edinburgh is one of the nicest places I've ever been. The people are very friendly, there's loads to do, and for being an urban environment, it seems to be very safe.

I've visited St. Andrews, and it also seemed like a nice place. Strictly commenting on the actual city and not the university, the city seemed like it would grow to be rather boring. I don't know how much you care about that, but it's basically three streets and a golf course. Obviously, the University is very nice, but if I were planning on an actual four-year degree here, I would choose Edinburgh over St. Andrews for the reason of the city in which each is located.

What do the letters after each uni mean?

Sorry, yeah. I shoulda said. The letters represent the grades I'd need to get in. Easy peasy.

Pretty much everyone who knows anything says that Edinburgh's brilliant. And the philosophy people say that the department there is top notch too. Obviously, I'll learn a bit more when I head up there and see.

And of course, you can go look at the vandalized David Hume statue (honestly, someone put a bumper sticker on him) up on High Street for philosophical inspiration. And then the new Adam Smith one. Then the naked one on top of the Old College.

Ouch!

I've a friend at St. Andrew's, and from what she told me, I can back up Kirobaito's assessment that the actual town of St. Andrew's is about as boring as possible. She speaks glowingly of the university itself though. Then again, she also encouraged me to go to Edinburgh for a study abroad program over St. Andrew's, so there you go.

I hear St. Andrews is a great uni.

I may be of some use here!

I never went to any of these myself, going to a music conservetoire, but I have 10 brothers and sisters, a few of which are of a uni age and some of them went/are going to these unis!

Rhodri and Aled (identical twins - seriously, you can't seperate them) both went to Cardiff and they loved it. The nightlife is awesome. They both do Psychology (one forensic, one child) and it's closely linked with the Philosophy course so they have friends that do it.

Carys went to Manchester to do music, and whereas she enjoyed it, she said the city was overwhelming because it was so big.

I think the youngest, Meryn, is applying to St Andrews. We have family up there so she'd like to stay with them. It's a beautiful city, but as previously pointed out, boring as sin.

Hope it helps!

I studied at The University of Teesside for my first degree, <img src="http://forums.eyesonff.com/images/smilies/rpg_009.gif" alt="skull" /><img src="http://forums.eyesonff.com/images/smilies/rpg_009.gif" alt="skull" /><img src="http://forums.eyesonff.com/images/smilies/rpg_009.gif" alt="skull" /><img src="http://forums.eyesonff.com/images/smilies/rpg_009.gif" alt="skull" /> city, brilliant uni.

For my second degree I'm at The University of Central Lancashire, brilliant city and even better uni.
