Mushihime-sama, Touhou 5: Mystic Square, Touhou 6: The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, and Touhou 7: Perfect Cherry Blossom.

I like all Touhou and CAVE shmups, but those are the ones that really stand out for me. Come to think of it, I enjoy doujin shmups a hell of a lot more than I do actual commercial ones. CAVE shmups really stand out though.

I plan on playing Triggerheart Exelica, DoDonPachi Dai-Ou-Jou, and ESPGaluda soon, as well.

EDIT: Oh, I also enjoy Giga Wing and Guwange.

There was this Toshinden 4 minigame that was actually quite amazing.

M.U.S.H.A and Thunder Force III for the Mega Drive still rank as my favourite shmups of all time. They're both quite old at this point though. Of the more recent shmups I think Gradius V was surprisingly good and probably the best shmup for the PS2.

Well, of the ones that got NTSC/PAL releases.

I imported a NTSC-J PS2 and Mushihime-sama (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Modt2TDhu8k&feature=channel) a few months ago, and it was worth every penny (cost me about $200 overall, I got a lucky buy on the game, which you cannot find anywhere other than eBay for $120+).

What's your view on manic shmups, Dreddz?
They're ok but the manic sub-genre has become so over-saturated that there is no real personality with any of them nowadays. It seems like the only differences between two manic shmups is the ship.

I'm also not the masochistic type so I choose not to torture myself for days trying to beat a manic shmup. In fact I've only ever beaten two and those were Mars Matrix and Ikaruga. And Ikaruga is barely a manic shmup anyway.

Sin and Punishment is rather nice, if it even counts. One of my favorite Shmups is Metal Slug. (It's a Shmup, right? D:) I can barely tell what a Shmup is right now. >_>

Subterranean Animism is a pain in the ass to beat, even on Easy.

I'm working on Perfect Cherry Blossom's Extra Stage-- I've come so close to beating it!

I'm also working on the 1CC of Guxt. :D
