View Full Version : Good girls and boys having seizures:

Murder increased the avatar size allowance, and we should promptly change our avatars to take advantage of the extra twenty pixels we get (within two weeks, he said)! =O

If you want your avatar resized, but you can't do it yourself, just let someone know; if you provide the original image that your avatar was made from, your new avatar will look even better!

If you need help in resizing your avatar, feel free to contact Shlupquack, Marshall Banana, Momiji, or Tavrobel and they will be able to assist you.

Rye mentioned in the other thread that she's willing to help, too!

Rantzien is also helping, I believe!

Because the KB allowance hasn't changed, here are tips for saving an avatar that's 80x80 and within 10 KB:

By the way, I found out the hard way that using Adobe ImageReady's "Save Optimized Image As" will actually enable you to use images that otherwise wouldn't fit within the filesize here.

For those using Photoshop and not ImageReady, use the Save For Web/Device option to get a good quality .gif or .png. I save all mine as PNG-8 and they are all under the filesize constraint and still pretty :D

For transparency on EoFF you should be using PNG-8 or GIF. PNG-8 has slightly better compression last I checked for much the same quality.

GIF is used for animations, duh.

JPEG is used for just about anything that doesn't use transparency(it generally has a better color palette and can be set up to fit within just about any size limit/quality).

PNG-24 is used for complex transparencies that look bad on GIF(you can build around it if you know GIF's limitations but for most people complex transparency is best in PNG-24). However, good luck getting PNG-24 images in under our size restraints. It isn't all that difficult to end up with a small signature with a simple transparency that is 50+kb size. And I have seen PNG-24 signatures that width and height wise would fit here that possess 300 or more kb in size.

PNG-24 is also used for any image if size doesn't matter. It is a standardized loseless file type that is readable in practically any software(unlike many loseless file types).

on my profile, it's 60x67, on my edit avatar page, it's 70x79! WHERE WILL THE MADNESS END

Yeah, it looks like it does drop in size while viewing profiles.

Edit: Apparently, it's just scaled to fit 60 by 60 in profiles, so you have nothing to worry about. :D

80x80 is nicer than 60x60, but why not just go 100x100?
It's not because we need another 20 pixels, it's just because it's so much easier to obtain 100x100 avatars since they're everywhere. You can use LJ avatars, avatars from other forums, etc. I hate not being able to use a lot of awesome avatars that I see. :3

I think that sprite based avatars would be kinda ugly if they are enlarged, so I'll keep Ivysaur as he is.

I think it's safe to assume that people who use sprites as avatars are excluded from considering if enough people use the extra 2800 pixels.

I promise not to cast my vote to regress unless I really do think the change sucks.

The increased use of annoying animated .gifs is pretty much making the decision for us though.

I'll be keeping my avatar the same because I use the same size on every other forum I go to and I also have variations that I would also have to redo. It has nothing to do with being a stickler. I really do encourage you all to go to the increased size, and not use annoying animations. It would be less work for me that way because I'll probably be the one who has to switch all the user groups back if we do go back.

Momiji

I've only seen two new .gifs so far, and that's Allie's and Aaron's. It's not like that's even very relevant to the avatar size, since one can have annoying .gifs at pretty much any size. The rest of the new .gifs belong to those who already had animated avatars to begin with. :p

There are still a few avatars that I need to resize/edit, but I haven't done anything during these past couple of days, because I wanted a break from Photoshop and such.

Levian still gets a Mega Man avatar (I think I have a neat idea); Shiny still gets a bigger Totoro; and Bunny still gets a bigger version of his avatar with a Christmas edit.

The increased use of annoying animated .gifs is pretty much making the decision for us though.

It's animated torture I tells you.

Momiji
12-07-2008, 07:07 AM
Seriously. This place is becoming more animated than Munty's sig. (The difference is-- I like Munty's sig)

The upsetting thing is, this has nothing to do with the larger avatars, since there was no increased kb size permitted to support them. However, the admins are going to see it that way, and we may as well wave goodbye to our newly acquired privilege.

Jojee
12-07-2008, 07:14 AM
Whine whine whine :rolleyes2

As you said, this has nothing to do with the larger avatars. And I agree with Jesswee, there aren't an abundance more of animated avatars than before. Even Sheep had an animated avatar before at 60x60, and he only wanted the flashing sig because of the whiners

Although if we do go back to 60x60 (and I don't even care about the size really, just the reaction), I will make sure to make an animated avatar and sig request thread and get as many people to wear them as I can. ^^;;

Momiji
12-07-2008, 07:21 AM
I'm not whining. I'm throwing out an advisory.

No, I think the size and animated avatars are completely irrelevant-- but I'm positive the admins who are against this change will see this as a perfect reason to go back to 60x60. And though you don't care about the size, some of us do.

Jojee
12-07-2008, 07:23 AM
If you can see that it's irrelevant, I'm sure the admins can see it too.

If they're just using it as an excuse to go back to 60x60, then it's quite clear they are simply against it, period, and will find some excuse at some time anyway.

Momiji
12-07-2008, 07:26 AM
So just abuse it so we lose them faster? Great job.

Jojee
12-07-2008, 07:29 AM
Who's abusing? Honey, I've pretty much always used animation. Sheep has often used animation as well. The only difference between before and now are people whining. And yes, I will make use it to make statement against the whiners if I feel like procrastinating enough. ^_^;

Marshall Banana
12-07-2008, 07:29 AM
The difference between then and now is: a few people have animated avatars that are square images instead of sprites, which Jojee or I have made. The rest of the GIFs are sprites, which have always been around, but most of them are smaller. Only a few people are using the avatars that Jojee and I have made, though, I think.

Because of the staff's behavior in this thread, I don't expect 80x80 avatars to stick around. Members should just have as much fun as they can with 80x80 avatars while they can and not worry about the staff or this "trial."

http://s107.photobucket.com/albums/m285/fofonda/Emotions/peachkiss.gif

Momiji
12-07-2008, 07:33 AM
I'm not whining, damn it. I'm saying this for the sake of those of us who happen to enjoy having less pixelated, cramped avatars for once. And I'm not just talking about you or Sheep. There are a bunch of new animated avatars since the size limit was raised-- and if you can't see that, you clearly are not paying enough attention.

I honestly don't mind that people have them. I just happen to like having a nice, clear avatar.

Fonzie
12-07-2008, 07:40 AM

Clouded Sky
12-07-2008, 07:53 AM
Even Sheep had an animated avatar before at 60x60

Yay you said it for me! I could really care less if it's 80x80 or 60x60. I'm not here to compare avatars - I'm hear to read threads. There are so many flashy things on the internet anyway, I'm frankly used to it, so bigger, smaller, moving, non-moving, MEH.

As far as the admin are concerned, this wasn't a "privilege" for them to take away. It was clearly a trial period. Of course if they don't like it they'll take it away, that's why it's a trial period.

As far as animated goes, There are what, maybe like 7 people with them now as opposed to like 5 before? I'm just saying ANIMATED =/= 80x80. Yeah, they get more annoying at that size but you can give people seizures just as well with 60x60 ones.:D

Del Murder
12-07-2008, 07:58 AM
There probably isn't that many more animated avatars. It probably has a lot to do with biased sampling from looking in this thread. But you cannot deny that something only slightly annoying becomes much more annoying when it is bigger. To say the size increase has nothing to do with it is foolish.

The decision has not yet been made. Other than this one issue I'd have to say I'm pretty fine with the change right now. There are also plenty of people who's opinions matter just as much as mine and who have not weighed in on it publicly. I only keep posting because I'm bored and I'd also like to repeat as Best Admin.

Thanks for your votes.

i move that this thread should be closed...all it's doing is making people argue, and that's not going to solve anything.

the avatar size has been changed temporarily, and perhaps permanently, so just suck it up and deal with the animations (i know this is bias because my avatar is animated, but seriously, it's not a big issue)...this isn't aimed at anybody in particular, but no matter what your viewpoint is, people aren't going to listen to you; if people want to use animated avatars, people are going to use animated avatars, just let it go, there's nothing you can do (while this sounds hostile, it's not meant that way...i'm just trying to make BOTH sides see some sense)

Del Murder
12-07-2008, 08:14 AM
Uh, the point of this thread is for people to get help with resizing their avatar. I don't think there's that much arguing and almost certainly nobody is hostile.

.:kerrod:.
12-07-2008, 08:42 AM
i meant that what i said may be taken as hostile, and while you say there's not much arguing (which i disagree with), there's also not much resizing going on

Well I went from animated to non-animated. Hard enough for me to get one of my animations in the 60x60 size(me = bad with animations).

Anyhow, this should have been seen as coming. By changing the size limit and advertising it you promote people to gain new avatars. When the people doing the new avatars/resizes happen to be known as animated avatar makers you are going to run into at least a slight increase in animated avatars.

As for me if we go back to 60x60 I will be using my old animated cat girl again. If we stay with 80x80 I will probably continue to use non-animated avatars. Well unless there is a kb increase as well. A KB increase would push me to play with animations more :D.

Edit- Though hearing all the reactions to animated avatars makes me really want to make one :p.
Also if it went up to 100x100 or even 150x150(like I see on several forums) I would be even less likely to make animated avatars. At those sizes I can just make more small details. For example my current one was made for a forum with 150x150 size, and it looked a fair bit better there in my opinion. A lot of the micro detail isn't visible at this size(let alone 60x60).

The increased use of annoying animated .gifs is pretty much making the decision for us though.

I've only seen two new .gifs so far, and that's Allie's and Aaron's. It's not like that's even very relevant to the avatar size, since one can have annoying .gifs at pretty much any size. The rest of the new .gifs belong to those who already had animated avatars to begin with. :p

I would've switched to this avatar regardless of the size change, for the record. I'd just have used a smaller version of it. In fact it was actually harder for me to make the change in 80x80 because I had to remove the "Communism" caption from the original version in order to make it fit the file size requirements.

Samuraid
12-11-2008, 07:27 AM
To many of the 60x60 arguments here:

Just for the record, saying that allowing 80x80 pixel avatars automatically results in more animated .gif images is complete rubbish. If anything, it would be easier to make an animated .gif at 60x60 because you would have more file space to work with, relatively speaking.

Miriel
12-11-2008, 11:03 AM
80x80 doesn't make more animated images, it just makes the animated ones larger, more visible, and more obnoxious. That's all.
