View Full Version : Wolf Kanno's "Swear Jar" thread

OK, so lately I've been doing more smack talk than usual for a certain FF I don't like. This apparently has offended a few (even though its true) and thus in order to curb my bad trolling habits, I have decided to create a swear jar thread.
Basically it goes like this: If I say anything terribly negative about this game or bring it up when I'm talking about stuff developers need to stop doing cause it was bad then and won't be better now. Call me on it and I will post in this thread something good about this game and I will make it long and somewhat heartfelt.
The goal here is to either stop me from trolling this game or eventually learn to appreciate it.
The rules do not apply to the game's sequel or the Compilation of VII. I can't exactly go cold turkey about this, I'm only human people. If you do not know what title it is, then you obviously don't go through the gaming forums much. :rolleyes2
BTW, the rules only apply to things starting at the time this thread was made and only apply when I bring the game up out of nowhere. If I'm already in a topic about the title, it doesn't count so don't be pegging me for the XIII battle system thread. This concerns new topics or threads I have not posted in.

The first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem.

I like your attitude! Nothing wrong with having an opinion, but it's definitely better to look at the silver lining than the parts you don't like o:

I don't know why you care. It's hardly your fault that there are so many good examples of bad game design in FFX that you can bring it up in practically any conversation on the decline of JRPGs.

I disagree. AFter playing a horrible game, looking to the silver lining doesn't make you feel better.
Hours of bitching and complaining however, almost makes the wasted tiem worth while. :p

So far, this seems to have amounted to an entire thread of FFX bashing. I thought you were supposed to say nice things here.
Anyway, you're allowed to dislike it. As far as I can see, you don't try to make anyone else dislike it, and you don't seem to post just to cause trouble. Unless that's the real purpose of this whole thread. :shifty:

I'm the only one who has to say nice things and no this thread was not created to bash X. I've just had a few people call me on being a bit "too passionate" about my feelings and so this was created as a fun way for X fans to stop me from bashing the game.

Let's face it, I'm a whore... :D

Anyway...
I feel I may have skimmed on the line in a recent post so I will abide by my rules and post something nice about FFX...
Though I am not fond of the the final product, I must say it was bold for Square to move away from a traditional medieval style swords and sorcery and move onto something more Asian. I have always been fond of the ocean and sea and have noticed I tend to be very fond of games with an oceanic theme. The villages of Besaid and Kilika are no different and are easily my favorite location in the title. I feel the Ocean theme X was a nice change of pace and allowed for an intriguing new art direction.
Even the imagery of Tidus' Brotherhood sword was rather enchanting in the early days before the titles release. The Brotherhood still remains my favorite weapon in the game and its Tidus main weapon throughout the title.
I also liked the implementation of underwater parts and I felt the design of these moments were not only realistic but generally fun due to a limited party selection and general change in strategy.
Overall, I have always been drawn to water for its symbolism and imagery.

If anyone wants, this thread can be a general FF thread. If you have an FF title you dislike vehemently, try to go without saying anything for awhile about it. ;)
You can do the opposite, have a game you adore, try to stop mentioning it for awhile. We can make this a group activity :jess:

More like "Quit Your bitching about an FF title" ;)
I only suggested stop talking about ones you like for those who don't hold any malice for any particular title.

I guess this is a good time for me to stop complaining about how everyone in FFIV fakes their deaths so that you only have six party members at a time.

I guess I could shut up about Tidus for a while. Or Nomura.

Well that's hardly fun.
Stupid things in games need to be called out. God knows the stupid people that eat up those stupid things won't call it out, so someone has to.

Because people get more riled up by things they hate than things they like, I s'pose!

Its true, though the only time I think people hear me speak praises anymore is concerning Persona...
Then again, I feel sparking heated debate makes the forums more fun. Listening to people just talk about the good stuff concerning a title always sounds like a bunch of old maids from a quilting circle. It gets boring pretty quickly. I generally feel you learn more about something you love when you hear a different perspective and no one has a more different perspective than the person who dislikes your favorites. ;)

And FFXII. That's why you're currently defending the Espers, which I recall only using once ever, and that was to look at them. Oh, wait, maybe I should stop bashing XII for a while. See how that goes...

You could, though sadly I'm more happy with P3 than I was with XII. :(
Anyway...
I did another blunder so its time for another wonderful installment of "WK saying something nice about X" WARNING MAJOR SPOILERS!!!
I liked the fact that FFX finally did something that Square had been beating around the bush for years. I'm talking about having a bittersweet ending. V had the Deus Ex Machina moment with the crystals reviving everything, Kefka's death somehow gives the planet its will to live back, VII has its ambiguous ending but ruins it with its teaser ending showing XIII alive and well allowing most fans to speculate that everyone survived, VIII's ending is pretty much Disney "happily ever after" unless you're one of the few who somehow missed the fact that Squall is alive and well and the happy go lucky ending is just irony on the writer's part. IX tried to go for a bittersweet ending but chickened out and once again, Zidane overshadows the fact that Vivi is a better and more interesting character.
X finally does what Square had been skirting with for ages and released an FF with a tragic ending, not since smurfing FFI had an FF giving the player a "smurf you ending". Though I have issues with the ending in terms of emotion, the whole scene of Tidus disappearing was well made and and the music was surprisingly fitting for the moment. Its a shame X-2 wreaked all this as I felt X's ending was one of the more defining moments in the game.
