I knew my love of ghost stories would someday pay off. :D I was watching Gothika when suddenly there was a major revelation about a character with a tattoo of Anima Sola (lonely soul), the chained woman in purgatory wreathed in flames.
It starts to make more sense now. Most discussions about Anima involve the meaning of just the word itself. Looking back at the design for the Aeon, the membranous wings have flame-like edging, as do the spines in her upper head. The other parts of the image, chains and a woman in purgatory, fit the Fayth and Aeon very well.
I found an article discussing the symbolism here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anima_Sola).
EDIT: Looks like others made the same discovery on this forum. (http://www.neoseeker.com/forums/569/t680369-official-square-enix-ripped-off-iron-maiden/)
