Hello EoFF! I've come here in hopes of gathering as many talented artists as I can for my collaborative project, The Final Fantasy 500. This project's goal is the creation of a group picture of 500 characters from across the Final Fantasy series. This is no small task, so I've been searching for as many artists as I can to help me out. I've noticed this site has an unusually large amount of extremely talented artists, and I hope some of you would be willing to help me out in this. I've created a site to act as a resource center, status update page, and general Q and A page for anyone interested in what the project is about. You check it out here:
The Final Fantasy 500 (http://www.finalfantasy500.com)
I've gotten decent support so far, but with a project this size I'm always looking for more artists to help me out, so here I am. Anyone that is interested please check out the site for the basic idea behind the project. Any artists who want to help out can contact me either here in this thread, via PM, or via email at espritduo@hotmail.com. You can also find me on AIM occasionally, also as espritduo. Just browse through the characters listed on the site and let me know which character(s) you want to do, and I'll add you to the ever-growing list on the update page (http://www.finalfantasy500.com/update.htm).
Also, for any artists interested, here's a few important guidelines to keep in mind before you go rushing off on a drawing spree:
1. There's no deadline on the project. I will be working on it as long as it takes to get it done, and I'm giving the artists involved all the time they need to do as much or as little as they want to do in their own time.
2. As far as actual submitting goes, there's a limit of 10 characters at once per artist. Most people only take one character, but there are always a few eager beavers that like to take a bunch at once. This is great, but to keep a limit on how many characters I have up in the air, I'm limiting it to 10 at one time. As you finish characters you can then add more to your to-do list. Just don't go too crazy, since I've noticed I have a lot of people who have taken many characters, and have yet to finish their first one. Take as many as you think you can do in a reasonable time, and then as you finish them you can choose whether or not to do more.
3. I'm not screening artists based on quality or anything like that. If you're willing to help me out, I won't turn you down or ask you for samples or credentials(although I'm always curious to see anything the artist has done if they want). Just let me know what you want to do, and you're in. Simple as that.
4. Style and method. There are some things all artists needs to keep in mind when drawing their characters.
4a.) First and foremost, all characters need to be in color. If you really want to participate in the project, but can't color for beans, there's always the option of giving it to someone else to draw. I won't be actively looking for people to color other people's work, but if you can find someone, then go for it. As long as the finished piece is colored, I won't care how it got that way.
4b.) Secondly, the characters should not be in any sort of action pose, like jumping through the air, or swinging a sword, or anything too stylish. This picture is a group picture like you'd see in a graduation picture or some other gathering where you have a large group of people standing in front of a camera. The characters can be doing static things like holding up their sword, or posing in a "cool" manner, that's fine. Also, make sure the entire character is in the picture. No wings/feet/tails/limbs cut off from the edge of the picture. Just try to think of your character as a person(or animal, as the case may be) standing(or hovering for the flying types) as naturally as possible in front of a cameraman waiting for the flash.
4c.) Pencil-drawn (and colored) characters are acceptable, but I strongly recommend ink/computer drawn if you can manage it reasonably well. If you can go over the pencil-drawn character's lines in ink, then that's a good alternative. I'll still accept a completely pencil-drawn character, but unless the artist takes care to draw clear, solid lines and smooth coloring, it will come out as blurry, faded, and grainy, and may need to be touched up before I can add it to the final version. You can see examples of all kinds of drawing methods in the done characters I have uploaded on the site's character list (http://www.finalfantasy500.com/list.htm) page.
4d.) Last one. Backgrounds aren't needed and will only be removed by me when I get them and put them into the group picture, so don't go crazy with fancy backgrounds. Best background is just a plain white background with the character clearly and completely in view. You can add your signature if you like(just don't plaster it over the character!), and I'll keep that intact for the individual picture which will be displayed in a seperate credits section along with the names of everyone who participated in the project.
And that about covers the basics of the project. If you want to know more, you can always check out the FAQ (http://www.finalfantasy500.com/faq.htm) page of the site.
Feel free to post any questions or suggestions here and I'll be sure to address anything anyone brings up. Thanks in advance and good luck!

>>> Very interesting idea you got there, its a huge task.
I would like to give some piece of advice to you since there some issues when you try to gather talent from different people.
First the style, it seems you already thought about this and you gave some reference pics for the people out there. So I think is ok.
Second is the quality, all the drawings you gather must have a very similar quality. And of course not all the artists who send the images will create something in the same level.
You have to be careful about this.
Third and most important is the fan made vs official artwork.
In this final picture you want to make in your list of "done characters" most of those images you want to use (if not all), are official artwork from square, the problem is that mixing official art with fan made stuff will create something too weird and unappealing in the end.
So its better if you stick only to fan-made drawings and discard any official image from square, no matter how appealing and pretty they are.
Well this is something I was thinking about, your idea is great but it have to be carefully planned if you want to make it succeed..

Yeah, this is probably the biggest hurdle, and one I think is just inevitable. There will be a difference in quality between characters, since no two artists are exactly the same. I just have to try and hope for the best, and hope the basic individuality of the characters themselves is enough to make up for differences in style and quality. So far I've gotten a wide range of styles and quality work, though, and the images still mesh together surprisingly well, so I feel the end product will definitely be worth striving towards.

Oh yes, this is a completely fan-made project. The only official artwork is what I've gathered on my site for resource material for the artists. No matter how hard it may be to find an artist for a particular character, I will not have any official artwork in the final group image. I'm not sure what you were looking at on my done list, but if I understand you correctly, you're clicking on the name of the character on my list, and that brings up their bio with a list of resource images for the artists. If you click on the star next to a done character, you'll see the actual submitted fan artwork for that character.
Well this is something I was thinking about, your idea is great but it have to be carefully planned if you want to make it succeed..
I've spent many months now planning and organizing and predicting all the twists and turns of this project, and I am 100% confident I can make it work. All I need now is a solid core of dedicated artists to supply the art, and everything will come together. I've already got a quarter of the 500 characters accounted for by over 30 artists, and there are still many more sites on the internet I have yet to tap.
Now, what about yourself? Truth be told, your incredible artwork was one of the main reasons I picked this site for my project, and I'd be pleased as punch to have you lend your talents to the effort, even if it is just for one character.

I agree with this. If it were all drawn from official art it would get rather boring I guess.
I'll start on Julia from VIII. I don't have a clue how to work photoshop but i'll do a drawing with graphite and colour pencil.
Any idea on the scale of each drawings?

Any idea on the scale of each drawings?
The average size of each character completely zoomed 100% is usually about 200x500 pixels, although that varies depending on the character and pose. I scale the submitted characters up or down to approximate their actual height compared with the other characters once I get them, so you shouldn't have to worry too much about that.
And I can put you down for Julia no problem. Since you are doing her in pencil, just make sure the lines are nice and solid and clear, and the colors as smooth as possible, and not grainy or sketchy. That's a common problem with the pencil-drawn characters and tends to make them stand out from the rest as faded and blurry. If you are comfortable going over the lines in ink, you can try that. I have other artists that are doing that with their pencil-work.
>>> Yeah i wouldnt mind to do a couple of drawings, but the quality will probably be far above from the ones you already have.

If the only problem I have with your work is that it is too good, I'll gladly make that "sacrifice", heh. Just let me know which free characters you're interested in from the list and I'll put you down for them.
I'll do Relm, and Hilda if you like.
I like quite a bit. :) I'm assuming you're doing FFII's Hilda, and not FFIX's Hilda, since Hilda IX is no longer on the list due to space constraints. So I'll put you down for Relm and Hilda (FFII).

Unfortunately, Shiva's already taken. Make sure you check out the character list (http://www.finalfantasy500.com/list.htm) to see which characters have been accounted for and which are free. If you really have your heart set on her, though, I can talk to the person doing her and see if he'd be willing to switch. He's actually doing quite a few of the scantily clad women from the series, and I might be able to bribe him with Siren in exchange for Shiva, heh.

>>> I would like to take Hojo and the Onion kid/knight ..
You dont have Dr Unne and matoya in the ff1 list??
well that sucks, you should take out warmech and put dr.unne at least.
If you are willing to put unne or/and matoya ill draw them right away..;)
>>> Edit- oops, it looks like Onion Kid is taken already but because of this, I just had this fantastic idea that can make your project several times awesomer..
Why dont just make all the characters listed, open for everyone?
Lets say that "artist A", "artist B" and "Artist C" want to draw Sephiroth..
with the current system only "artist A" would have the right to draw Sephiroth, instead if is open for everyone "B" and "C" can draw that character too..
Everyone WIN with this, specially you since in the end you will have various images from the same character to pick from, and you dont have to pick the one you like right away, you can wait until the end, when the 500 characters are done and pick the best images for the final thing.
This way it will be more fair for all the people who want to help out there and of course its going to be more fun and im sure more people would like to help you with drawings..
I hope you consider this..

I had Matoya on the list at one time (you can actually still see her page here: The Final Fantasy 500 - Matoya (http://www.finalfantasy500.com/500/matoya.htm)), but I had to drop her to make room for another character down the line. I figured both Matoya and Dr. Unne just weren't big enough characters to justify keeping them in while trying to fit in other much bigger characters. I've always loved Warmech, and consider him the original superboss of the series, so I felt compelled to keep him in, and I doubt I'll change that, just cuz I like him so much. There's a few other characters like that here and there that are on the list mainly because they're personal favorites of mine and I just really want them in the project(like the FFII Beavers, FFVII's Johnny, or Sagi from FFU).
As far as letting people take the same character, I don't have any problem with multiple people taking the same character if they really want to. There's two problems with this on a large scale though.
Firstly, if I let people take any character they like without regards to who's already taken and who isn't, I'll have everyone doing the same popular characters, with the lesser ones being forgotten and the project stagnating. With a one artist per character rule, it keeps the project moving forward and makes sure the lesser characters are taken. I don't have so many artists yet that I can afford to have them all doing the same characters. If I had literally hundreds of artists on the project, I'd be more open to the idea, but as it stands now, there just isn't enough support for it if I want to complete the project in anything resembling a timely fashion.
The second problem is more of a personal one. I don't like being the judge and jury of who's art makes the cut and who's doesn't. The idea of having someone work hard on a character, only to have me drop it because someone else later did it better is unappealing to me. It's true that this means that what I get for a character is what I get, and I don't have much choice in the matter, but I feel that's just the price I'm willing to pay to ensure an artist doesn't have to worry about their efforts going to waste.
Of course, that being said, I'm not stopping anyone from doing a character they really want to. Like I said above, multiple people can do the same character if they both want to, and I'll just suck it up and pick which one works with the project better. I try to keep that to a minimum though.
Also of note, I am willing to take characters not on the list if I like the piece enough. So if you're really that eager to do Matoya and Dr. Unne, then go ahead! I'll make room for them somehow.
For now I'll put you down for Hojo for sure, and wait for you to let me know about the rest.

>>> hehe, I doubt real ff fans would only want to draw popular characters, that would be just too lame..
The second problem is more of a personal one. I don't like being the judge and jury of who's art makes the cut and who's doesn't..
>>> I think thats exactly what you have to do when you try to create a project (if you want it to be good of couse), and I dont see why you have "a price to pay", is not like you are forcing people to help you. I mean the artists who are helping you with this are doing it because they want right?..

I am up to do Setzer from Final Fantasy 6, if he wasn't taken.
I'd love to do Rydia if she wasn't taken...
I can also do Tifa if she isn't taken as well...

Elena (FF7)
Mindy (FFIV) -- lineart completed
Mandy (FFIV) -- lineart completed
Sandy (FFIV) -- lineart completed
Kuja (FF9)

I can put you down for Gau, Elena, and Kuja no problem, Setzer the Gambler. And if you are going to do Sandy and Mindy, do you think you could do Cindy as well? it'd be weird to have those two drawn by one artist, and then the third sister drawn by a completely different artist.
As far as Shera goes....she is currently on the 500, but she was actually one of the characters I was planning on dropping if and when black orb submits Matoya and Unne. You can still do her if you really want to, and I'll just have to figure out some other character to drop, but if you don't mind it would make things much easier on me just to let her go. And the same goes for Darryl, really. She had originally been on the 500, but I had to get rid of her to make room for others. Like I said to black orb, if you really have your heart set on Darryl, you can still draw her and if I really like it I'll make room for it somehow. As you can see, though, I have to get rid of someone else to fit her in, and that tends to complicate things.

Looking good so far. And yeah, Amano knows how make your head spin with his artwork, heh. I like the rose in her hand though, nice touch.

Yeah, you sort of had bad luck with that one. If it was some other character who hadn't even been started yet or wasn't part of a multi-character piece, I could take it no problem, and I'd just let that person know they'd have some competition. If you find anyone you like, just let me know.

Unfortunately, both of those are taken, with Fighter actually being done. I wanna try. I'm a busy gal so I don't know how quick they'd be done. Does it have to be done in photoshop/paintshop/gimp? Can I just freehand it and scan it in? If so I'd like to take on Sephy-poo <3 , Rufus, Squall, and.... idk yet. I'd like those 3 plzkthnx <3
espritduo
03-05-2009, 05:57 AM
Rufus and Squall are already done, so I can't really recommend doing them. Sephiroth is already accounted for(by two people already actually), so I wouldn't do him either. If there's a free character you'd like to do, though, I have no problems with that. You can check the character list page (http://www.finalfantasy500.com/list.htm) to see who is done, accounted for, and still open.
As far as how you draw it, I'm fine with freehand, as long as it is in something like ink or marker. I can take pencil-drawn and colored art, but it doesn't show up very well with the rest of the characters, so I'd stay away from that if at all possible.

Well a reasonable amount of time for this project is pretty much however long you like. You can take a day, a week, or year if you like. You should place some characters in close proximity so they look like they're interacting with other characters :)

That's actually the Black Mage from FFI, not Vivi, but he is still amazing, yes. :)
Nice! I think, though, that cutting off the height to maybe around half and placing them more width-wise might be more effectful. That's your choice though!
Yeah, it sort of ended up longer than wide unexpectedly. These pre-500 images are just me getting practice before the full 500 character image, so I work out the bugs as I go along.
You should place some characters in close proximity so they look like they're interacting with other characters :)
e.g. nanaki could be lying on Ozma, Squall could be pointing his gunblade at zalera, Eiko and Mog could be standing back to back. etc
I plan on doing that whenever I see two characters that work together in the image. For example, I do have Whyt peaking out from behind Rydia, and Marlene is standing right next to Barret. I definitely want somebody on top of Ozma(and Alexander whenever somebody decides to tackle him), and I had tried out Cait Sith, but for some reason it didn't look quite right so I put him on his own.
As for Mog, I will be having FFIX's Mog with Eiko just like Rydia and Whyt, but the Mog in this image is actually FFVI's Mog, so he's alright on his own. You can tell the difference because FFIX Mog has a bit of a mane and a yellow pom-pom and FFVI's Mog has no mane and a red pom-pom(or none at all, depending on the source). Also, one's a guy and one's a gal, heh.

Yeah, it ended up that way completely by accident. I was going ~ten characters a row for ten rows, thinking I'd have a square when I was done, but of course, people are taller than they are wide, so I ended up with a longer than expected image. It did give me a good idea of how tall the image will be when done though. It will be about as tall as it is now, but five times wider, which is huge, but not unmanageable.

You can go ahead and mark the Nero's as free for the taking. I might still get around to finish them, but I don't want to occupy the spot if I'm not sure I will!
I dunno how I missed this. This is friggin amazing. I'd help out, but I never learned how to manipulate my art very well in an editting program. And lost my scanner a long time ago anyway. Awesome stuff though
Edit: That mog looks suspiciously "official". Was that done by an artist?
espritduo
07-21-2009, 06:14 AM
Yeah, that Mog is obviously just a copy of the very Mog artwork I used for my logo :P. I let it go because it was just a bonus thing the artist threw in with their other characters and there is somebody else who is actually supposed to be doing Mog and hasn't finished yet. Once that one is done, that will be the real Mog for the project.
And both of those look great, Setzer. Whenever you're done, I'll happily take them.
And if you've actually already started on the Nero brothers, Rantzien, I might as well leave you on. I don't think anyone's going to be asking for them any time soon anyways, heh.

Wow, I looked through the characters available. There's too many that I could choose from, but I'm going to pick one at the moment. Anyway, I'll choose to do Cid Kramer from VIII.
Cid it is!

Yeah, that's a slick looking Watts. Awesome work!
EDIT: Oh, and if I could make a small request with Zone - do you think you could manage to squeeze in The Girl Next Door dirty magazine into his image? That's sort of his thing besides the convenient stomach cramps.

That's an awesome Cid right there. I think that might be my favorite one of yours so far. And yeah, 50 characters...that's getting close to half the total characters done up to this point. Crazy. If I just had nine other people as dedicated as you, the project would be done right now.
And I'll add Alexander and Titan to your list. I'm eager to see what you do with Alexander.

Ah, thanks and fixed. As far as Magissa goes, I don't know if I'll be able to squeeze her in there or not. I've pretty much got the 500 where I want it now, and it would be exceedingly difficult to try and get rid of someone else now. I'll still put her up on the site of course, and we'll see if something doesn't work itself out down the road.

Lol, I've drawn Marcus but that's as far as I've got. Unfortunately it's not due to being busy but more being un-motivated at the moment that is making them take so long. I drew Marcus quite a while back but just haven't really felt motivated enough to complete him or the other two just yet. But dun worry, I'll finish them. Just a matter of time and how bored I get with everything else, haha.

Well you got about 100 other character's I'd say it's a pretty fair deal ;) Let's see yours anyway!
Also I know she's not really the conventional image. To my mind she takes after her father who I imagine to be pretty insanely huge including height wise and she's a lanky, skinny kid. I hope it's not a big problem x)

Nope, no problem by me. Relm should be on the site now, in all her lanky glory. :)

Has Balthier been taken? I didn't see him in the 100, but I'm too lazy to look through the whole thread for it. If so, I CALL HIM HE'S MIIIIINE. But if he's already taken, I have others:
Black Waltz no. 3 (just 'cause he's fun to draw)
Bartz ('Cause he's so unpopular for some reason, but I kinda like FF5)
Quina (Same reason as Black Waltz)
Shopkeeper from FF1. Yes, you read that right.
Marche from FF Tactics Advance
Aaaaand I can't think of any more. least of all I should be able to do Black Waltz no. 3, shopkeep and Marche, but if any of the otners are availible I'll happily do them.
espritduo
09-22-2009, 06:11 AM
You may want to check here (http://www.finalfantasy500.com/list.htm) to see what characters are already taken and/or finished. Balthier is already taken, as is Bartz and Quina. In fact, both Bartz and Quina are already finished, although I'm not to happy with the Bartz one, so you can take a shot at him too if you like. The FF1 shopkeeper is not on the list, and is a bit too obscure and irrelevant for me to make room for him now. Marche and Black Waltz #3 are still available, though, so you can do them without any problems.

09-22-2009, 07:38 AM
I, uh, typed a lot but my browser decided to delete it all.
And so, I give you... highlights of my deleted response!
I didn't know there was a list, or I would have checked and will for further characters.
I might do all the Waltzes as they're all not taken, but only #3 for sure.
I'll do my version of Bartz, and you can decide. I saw the other, though. If I get in, it... might be best not to tell the guy.
Bit surprised Quina's taken, but I expected Balthier to be.
I'll get to work on Marche first, And I'll do that tomorrow.
And last, how do I send the pictures to you?
espritduo
09-22-2009, 09:46 AM
OK, I'll put you down for Black Waltz #3 and Marche for sure, and we'll see about the others as you get to them. You can email the images to me at espritduo@hotmail.com, or post them as an attachment here, or if you have a deviantart account or some other place to upload you can post them there, and just link me to the image. And just so you know, it's best if there is no background to the image - just the character on a plain white background. Thanks!
Joethulhu
09-22-2009, 11:01 PM
I expected the white background. I do traditional art, so I'll try and keep my paper neat and clean.
I have a DeviantArt, and thinking about it, I'd like to post them there, so I'll link them.
[edit] Looking over the list, I've decided to do Dalan and Puck also. I'm putting together my resources, and my lined paper sketch of Black Waltz no. 3 looks pretty good, so I could have that done very soon.
espritduo
09-23-2009, 05:37 AM
Alrighty, I'll put you down for Dalan and Puck as well.
Joethulhu
09-26-2009, 05:29 AM
Update and questions:
Black Waltz no. 3 is finished except for inking and color. Do I actually need to color it, or do you want to?
Puck is half-finished, I'm having trouble with his pants.
In between I've worked on Bartz a bit, I've got his head half done and his torso finished, and I think it's coming along well, though he is proving to be the most difficult.
I haven't started Dalan, but I will one I finish Puck.
espritduo
09-26-2009, 05:47 PM
Hah, I'm no artist, so you'll have to be the one to color it. Hope that isn't too much of a problem.
Joethulhu
09-28-2009, 03:45 AM
Nah, that's fine. I should have Black Waltz & Puck done Wednesday-ish; I gave myself the weekend off. ^^
「edit」Sorry for missing another one of my own due dates, I'm just not going to give them anymore. They would be done, but Puck... didn't turn out quite right, and I realized I didn't have much to color it with. I may color it digitally. For now, though, would you like to see the black and white drawing?

Yeah, that Brahne is hot stuff, hah. Sorry about the delayed response, but my computer died about a week ago, so I haven't had much online time. My new, vastly more powerful computer should be arriving this week sometime, so keep those images up till then. And don't worry, everything is safely backed up on my external harddrive, so this doesn't effect the project at all.
And Joethulhu, you can send me a sample of the black and white sketches if you like. I always like seeing any works in progress, and it's always nice to know a character is on the way and not lost in artistic limbo.
beema
10-27-2009, 06:41 AM
What are most of you using to create these drawings?
I'm a traditional pen on paper kind of guy but I've never done color (not for detailed stuff) except on a computer where I've scanned in something and done coloring in illustrator (a bit painstaking).
I'd be interested in doing a character or two.
I really like the Sabin from Kal... that guy needs to make some more. Looks kind of like a Street Fighter image actually.
Joethulhu
10-28-2009, 03:19 AM
Sorry that I've also taken so long to reply also, but I've been having scanner troubles. Once I get it working, I'll scan the picture. I'm really sorry about this all, I should have had it finished by now, but I can really ONLY color it digitally, and the scanner is just a hair short of flipping me off on the messages it's sending me. I'm sorry it's not done, I may just have to get someone else scan and color it for me if the scanner keeps acting up.

Finally, I have time to finish Zone.
The next one I'll go for Hiryu...:)
espritduo
10-29-2009, 05:44 AM
Ah, good old perverted Zone, I love it. And Hiryu, eh? As soon as I get my new computer I'll add that to your list. I'm supposed to get it tomorrow, so hopefully I'll be back up and running this weekend.
And beema, if you're interested, check out the site to see what characters are still free and that you'd be interested in doing, and let me know. There's still plenty of characters open.
And take your time, Joethulhu. There's plenty of other people who have taken far longer than you, so don't feel like you've got to rush. The project will get done when it gets done. Hopefully before FFXXVI!
EDIT: Alrighty, my new computer's broken in, and I've updated the site with the new submissions.
