View Full Version : Hey guys, I'm "on a distinguished road"!

Yar

P.S. What does that mean?

http://img34.picoodle.com/img/img34/3/1/22/f_drom_0ad0079.png

Is everyone on a distinguished road, or are there varying kinds of roads, avenues or boulevards that we EoFFers may be on?

blackmage_nuke
01-22-2009, 10:16 AM
Whats with the new reputation button? Is it a new way to tell EoFFers how much we love each other? Why implement something and then have no site staff on to explain it? I think it's a test to see how we react, like throwing a hamster into a maze full of mice and feeding them pellets instead of cheese. Then including a button that shocks you when you press it...ohhh I'm onto you! Now the only question is what to do.

Loony BoB
01-22-2009, 11:19 AM
Geez you're quick! Anyway, see the announcement for details. :p

EDIT: Merged! Also, I've removed the little green image from the postbit so at the moment it only shows up on profile pages. I might remove it from there, too, I don't know... at the moment it's more so people can approve of other people's posts, rather than actually increasing reputation points or anything similar to that. Not a race for reputation-counts, just an easy way to say something nice.

Rep doesn't seem to be enabled on the Metallic Blue styleset. sadface

also FG disabled reputation last month. Is EoFF becoming FG and vice versa?

edit: in fact I don't see it on any style set.

edit 2: oh it doesn't seem to be showing up on the postbits of any style sets, but it does show up in user profiles. Yet Yars' screenshot shows it on the postbit. What gives?

Loony BoB
01-22-2009, 07:14 PM
He took that screenshot while the templates were being edited. People notice things extremely quickly around here. :p

FG was an EoFF ripoff for years, so it's nothing new that it's trying to emulate us (until it becomes common knowledge and they go through another 'we must not be like EoFF' phase). ;) EoFF doesn't emulate FG any more than it emulates any other forum out there. FG just happens to be the one you know. This was inspired by TheAdminZone (since that's where I first noticed it being used to effect) and adjusted to fit EoFF (ie, it's more about knowing you did good than being able to boast about it).

rubah
01-22-2009, 07:14 PM
The amount of reputation won't show up because b0b doesn't like it and because well, I mean, whatever. The ability to give someone is down by the warn button.

The Man
01-22-2009, 07:28 PM
For the record I haven't really consciously modelled any of FG's recent decisions after EoFF. If anything I'd say we emulated EoFF way more when I first started FG than we do now. With that particular comment I was mostly commenting on the relaxation of rules here, which was something I'd been arguing in favour of for years before it happened.

I can kind of see why putting it on the postbit could turn it into an e-popularity contest but at the same time I don't really see it happening here. Then again this is the same board that completely removed post counts because they felt people were making it into an e-penis measuring contest, so you know, whatever :monster:

Loony BoB
01-23-2009, 12:45 PM
Somewhat predictably, I've had to delete a bunch of "coz they're cool" or "hey let's communicate via reputation" reputation points. But most of the reputation points handed out in the first day or so have been people genuinely approving (or in some cases disapproving) of posts for their content, so I'm happy with how it's gone so far. :)

Of course, most of the joke ones were done by various mods. >=P

I've already found interesting threads just by reading through them in the admin CP. This is paying off, at least for me, for that reason. :D

DP: Forums staff can hand out negative reputation points.

It's not an ass-kissing button unless you only use it to suck up. I, for one, plan on using it on whoever helps me out with problems and answers questions well, particularly in the gaming/help forums rather than elsewhere. If you so wish it, you can boost the ego of someone who you actually (shock) think is deserving of it. Heaven forbid!

Of course, if you are able to and they are not against it, then I will not stop anyone licking any other such person at these forums... although with all this "I'm a chocobo who licks people a lot" stuff going on from you, boko, I'm starting to suspect you're just taking notes from my past posts/chat sessions. :shifty:

EDIT: What qualifies as a reputable post: Anything that is genuinely insightful, well-thought out, answers a question well and in a helpful way, a quality new thread... stuff like that. Obviously, not spam or people asking questions or "I want some love" (Sorry Polaris! - but I'm sure you'll get your reputation boosted for helping people in the GD forum :)) etc. Basically if you be sensible about it and aren't using it just for the sake of using it, then you're probably using it right.

I'm checking over all the reps and deleting any joke ones at the moment anyway. 'grats to qwerty on being the first person to get two reps for the same post, and for good reason.

I'm tempted to remove the negative feature from staff as well, actually. :p But I'm trusting them to use it for responsible purposes, which I would not trust a chunk of the regulars to do. It's for the same reason that all through the years this has been acceptable...

That was a great post, man.

That post sucked.

The Man
01-25-2009, 09:03 AM
if you require people to specify reasoning and just delete the stuff that doesn't supply valid reasoning, that could theoretically work. Though I wouldn't trust it to if it were anonymous, and I wouldn't trust it not to devolve into negrep wars if it weren't. I don't really think there's a good solution to it other than allowing people who have earned it the ability to negrep, but not anyone else. I do think that should be a larger portion of the user base than staff (or staff + RMs) though, or else the negrep feature should just be removed entirely.

Totally. I got none. :( Three or four people have given me reputation points so far but I've had to delete all but one. :p

The point of this system is to encourage people to compliment the better posts of this forum and to allow people who do make valuable posts to feel good about themselves.

Visitor messages, custom titles and swear words - now they are pointless. But that doesn't me fight against them.

There's a spot for them, yes, but I have 11 points and one rep? One rep is worth eleven points? The system needs refining. I mean, the thing is really small, I can't see who repped me, I dun know when someone reps me unless I continually check the CP, and it doesn't have it's own section you just need click CP.

As far as I know, the reputation system allows people with administrative (possibly mod/super mod) abilities to see who the reputation was given by. All others can only see the thread, date given, and an optional comment. I tried looking at the User CP in the different skins and they were all the same.

Right now the descriptions are pretty meh, I might change them later. Also the points you need to get to a new level... as we don't give automatic points for things such as being registered for a long time, or allow for some people to have more 'point-giving power' than others, it would take a loooooong time to get to some of the current descriptions. I'll probably use levels in the same way that the UBB did with postcounts - level 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, Immortal.

Candies are better than points.

It still says that I'm an unknown quantity at this point in my profile, and the question of where the viewed points are in the User CP.

If you have no rep points, then it also shows nothing, correct?

I think you'll need to rebuild the user reputations after deleting them for everything to work properly. I recall that editing a user's reputation manually would still leave them with the improper comment value for their rep. So in other words, even if Tav's rep were currently 10, it wouldn't reflect that. Hopefully the next version of vB fixes this.

Oh dear, I'm an unknown quantity. Does this mean I got minus rep'd?

Oh, yeah, I changed the default to 'unkown quantity' because that seemed more accurate for someone who has never had a point given to them. Most people should have that now. I've also decreased the amount to go up levels, but it will still probably take a long time before you go up the 'ranks'.
