View Full Version : R1 for critical hit?

Well, me and a freind have been arguing recently with another freind (whos currently playing through FF8) about this matter.

The two of us beleive that pressing R1 at the right moment was the only way to initiate a critical attack. I cant remember whether it was only with Squall due to gunblade or others aswell.

But the freind currently playing through it beleives it only works for Squall and that pressing X then O timed right during Zells attacks will iniaite a critical during a normal attack. Is this correct or am I right in thinking this is alot of rubbish.

Thanks

As far as I knew, I thought that only applied to Squall and Seifer as gunblade users. :-/

It only applies to gunblade users.

yup, only Squall & Seifer, i don't remember it working with anyone else, and technicaly not always a critical hit but mearly added damage, as you can still crit without it as well as not crit with it... granted your chance of getting a critical hit is greatly increased if you do use the added dmg trigger...

Gunblade users = no critical hits, but 50% more damage by using the trigger
Everybody else = double-damage critical hits, the frequency is based on their Luck stat

Thanks, no one has mentioned the X + O thing which was what I mostly wanted to know about but thanks for all the replies. By the looks of it the X + O thing is crap lol

maybe he's referring to zell's limit break Duel. I thought the R1 trigger also worked for irvine also

Me and my freind instantly brought up Duel. We both played most of the FF games back in the good old days and for him to try and tell us X + O makes zell do a critical hit. Was like yeah his limit break moves require different buttom combinations. But nope he definitely means just during a normal attack....

you could get your two friends together, put in ff8, and compare damage. That way you will have direct proff of this. Have each person get in a battle with Zell in the group and take turns seeing what difference there is. If there is no difference you know it was a lie and you and yur friend are telling the truth, but if Zell does attack more... then post here and tell us all lol.

That's for Irvine's limit break.

As others have said, pressing R1 during an attack will have no effect on any character other than Squall or Seifer.

Indeed. R1 only works for Squall. End of story.

Epilogue: it works for Seifer too when you have him, as said multiple times already. :shobon:

If you have trigger method set to manual on gunblades, you will never get a crit hit if you don't press the trigger. If you set it to auto, you'll get automatic crits. Gunblade crits are not as potent as crits with other weapons, but you will get much more of them, even if it's set to auto.

No other weapons than gunblades can be triggered to get critical hits.

Only for gunblade users (Squall and Siefer only), when you press R1 with correct timing, the attack does 50% more damage. Squall also uses R1 for his limit break, Renzokuken.

X+O is Punch Rush (I think, I don't wanna research or play the game right now), an attack in Zell's Limit Break, Duel.

All characters can get critical hits, which doubles the attack damage, depending on your luck junctioning. Except, Squall and Siefer just have that additional R1 move...

Btw, Irvine only uses R1 in battle, besides escaping/fleeing, for his limit break, Shot.

P.S. I hope I could help.

I always forgot to do it for years and years which was rather silly of me. When playing through FFVIII again last year though, I remember making a point of always trying to get the extra damage.
