Dragon Ball Z to Rerun on Japanese TV in HD in April - Anime News Network (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2009-02-06/dragon-ball-z-to-rerun-on-japanese-tv-in-hd-in-april)
Daizenshuu EX - Updated 02/06/2009 -- ["Refreshed" DBZ TV Airing In Japan!] (http://daizex.com) (Feb. 6th News Entry)
I'm pretty excited to see how this turns out. The 100 episodes thing is just a rumour right now (which I guess is why ANN doesn't mention it), but if it turns out to be true that would be the most interesting part. Cutting 191 episodes does seem kind of extreme, but there are two things that made it 'okay' in my mind:
1: Obviously, trimming fillers and the staring contests/powerup sequences the series is infamous for
2: The cast is freaking old. 'Tienshinhan' is already dead, and 'Goku' is 72 years old. Doing the full 291 just increases the chances of more people kicking it.
What I would really want is for them to completely reanimate it but taking into consideration the Age thing again, that would take even more time. So this'll do. There is a surprising amount of anime fans who have never seen Dragon Ball Z, so I hope this 'refresh' is good enough to catch their attention and give 'em a bit of history. When I was skimming through my Cell Games DVDs, I was impressed at how some of those episodes could still hold up to similar shows today.
Aside: the date this is starting--April 5th--is also Toriyama's birthday.
