Do you rename your characters? Are there some that you like to rename just to affect the dialogue?

Someone once suggested here that I name everyone in FFVII "Sephiroth" I think I'll do that when we do Eyes on Plays FFVII. In FFVIII I like naming Griever as "my ass" and Shiva as "cake."

Wow, I never though renaming had any use

I don't remember dialogue typically, so I don't know what would be funniest. :/ DEFAULT IS BEST! Except III-DS. What terrible, horrible names. :(

Firion -> Frinel
Gus -> Guy

Kain -> Cain
Rydia -> Lydia
Tellah -> Tella
Edward -> Gil
FuSoYa -> Fusuya

Bartz -> Butz

TERRA -> Tina
SABIN -> Mash
CYAN -> Cayene

Aeris -> Aerith

And sometimes, just for fun:

Dagger -> Sarah

My last playthrough of VII when I was 13 years old.
Cloud >> Playboy
Tifa >> Hooker
Barret >> Mista T
Aerith >> Flower
Red XIII >> Kitty

And I think that's all who I got to name before my memory card decided to suck. Yea, these names suck.

I think in FF9 instead of renaming Garnet to Dagger, I named her Garnet, and she was like, "My name shall be Garnet"
I would check to see, but I don't feel like playing to that point
EDIT: 1000th post, yay

SABIN -> MashWasn't that a mistranslation of "Matt" or "Matthew"? At least, I always assumed it was.

No, that's a misconception started by people who don't know how to read kana.

Because of the way kana is constructed, you don't technically have "shu"; written down, you have "shyu." But you still pronounce it "shu" -- or, if it's at the end of a word, maybe just "sh."

"Mash" written in kana is "Masshyu," and if you didn't know you're supposed to ignore the Y (and downplay the U), that might look like it sounds like "Matthew." But it's really just Mash.

ah; I'd somehow also obtained the misconception that "sh" and "t" could be interchangeable in kana. So it goes.

I think in FF9 instead of renaming Garnet to Dagger, I named her Garnet, and she was like, "My name shall be Garnet"I did this my first time through the game, too, because "Dagger" just sounded too bland to me. Unfortunately, I eventually found that there are some scenes where you need to be using the default name for the symbolism and wordplay to work.

I don´t usually rename characters and if I do I name them other FF game characters. I have now FF6 playthrough going on where I have renamed characters following way:

Terra- Rydia
Locke- Blank
Edgar-Al-Cid
Sabin- Ward
Shadow- Tseng
Celes- Ashe ( I would have used Beatrix but it didnt fit)
Cyan- Auron
Gau-Guy ( I prefer Gus of Gai but oh well)
Setzer- Luneth ( I regret not using Ingus or Desh)
Mog- Yenke
Strago- Galuf
Relm- Eiko
Umaro- Biran ( havent get him yet but this name I will use)
Gogo- ( havent yet get him)

If I rename summons then I put something really stupid, usually nothing FF related.

"Mash" is an incredibly stupid name for anyone, let alone royalty, so I leave him as Sabin.

I change names for amusement's sake sometimes, but that's about it. I'm going to do the obligatory "my balls" playthrough of FFVII sometime, with a few other changes as well...

Yeah the 'My balls' one is a classic.

I saw an hilarious review of VIII where this guy named Rinoa 'A whore' and her dog 'anus'. This results in funny quotes like "When walking the streets a whore's anus learns new tricks."

On my second p;aythrough in VII I named Red XIII Nanaki. I regretted it when I got to Cosmo Canyon. Nanaki: "I'm home." Cloud: "Who is Nanaki?"

It's hard to explain, but Sabin just sounds too "soft" for that character. Mash suits him much better.

This thread cracks me up. :lol:

Would be funny if Shiva was named after some type food. Maybe McDonalds, put into that frame above.

I renamed Rinoa to Rose when I first played, haven't changed anything since.

I think Mash sounds too soft. As soft as mash potatoes. If you say Sabin like "Sa-BIN" it sounds harder.

My problem with Tina is just that it sounds too common. Terra has an earthy quality to it that is a good parallel with Celes (I know it wasn't meant to be like that but it worked out well). I am a big fan of the Woolsey translation, he did a great job given the situations he had to work with.

Mashed potatoes are potatoes that have been mashed. Hard things mash.

The Turk

True. But you have the dinner, 'bangers & mash', with the mash being mashed potatoes, but simply referred to as mash. lol... I can't not believe I just typed that in a FF forum.

Did you ever rename or make up names for any characters when possible? I've changed Amarant's name to Red in later playthroughs, and in FFX Tidus became Evian and Frans and Ixion was named Kit Fox on one of my files.

I never rename characters...I don't even like when I'm prompt to make hero's name...

Ixion is named Kit Fox in a screenshot in the International manual. Maybe the other manuals too, but I wouldn't know that since I don't have them, now would I?

How strange. As far as I know, he just works in manga; maybe he knew someone who was working on FFX.

That name appears in relation to another FF. can't remember which.

I renamed them when I was younger, but I can't be bothered with it now, save for one time when I played FFVI. The only one I piss around with is changing Aeris to Aerith because I think it's prettier. I will change them for the Eyes on FFVII playthrough aka playthrough of the best FF (I'm getting started on the smacktalk early) out of boredom, though.

I never change names, even if I know the character's actual name. Like I always keep Red XIII as Red XIII and Frog from Chrono Trigger as Frog.

My problem with Tina is just that it sounds too common. Terra has an earthy quality to it that is a good parallel with Celes.I like the name Sabin better. Mostly because Mash makes me think of the Vietnam war show.

Tina is a pretty common name. Tina is a suffix for many given names including Martina (from Mars, God of War) to Christina (from Christ, the annointed), and can be used in place of any form of Catherine/Katrina/whatever which is believed to be derived of the goddess Hecate whose name means "far off" or something. I like the name for its first two connotations.

I tend to name the main character Xavier. Rosa is a name I like to name girls as well as Lilleth or eve.
