A classmate was nice enough to let me borrow his copy of FFVI, so now I finally get to try this game out xD

Any advice? I don't want to get stuck too often, because when I get stuck on a game I become discouraged, and then I take a break from it. Since this is a borrowed game, I'd like to avoid that x.x

EDIT:

GBA version, if it makes any difference.

Only a couple of things to worry about missing, really. I'm sure most of these make no sense now, but they will once you play the game.

When you can freely explore Narshe, you'll come across Lone Wolf pilfering the treasure house. Give chase and when you corner him he'll offer a Gold Hairpin (weak) or the moogle (Mog, awesome!). Pick Mog and he'll join your party.
Once Mog joins your party, jump back in the Serpent Trench so he can learn the Water Rondo.
Hard to find enemies in the World of Balance: Fossil Fang - in the desert outside Kohlington where Figaro Castle sits, Grenade - in the forest to the west of the Veldt, Intangir - on the triangle island in the northeast corner of the world map.
When escaping from the Floating Continent, once you reach the end and are prompted to jump, choose to stay and wait for Shadow. When five seconds remain on the clock he'll show up and leave with you. Otherwise you lose him and he's gone forever!

If your going for an awesome game file, dont level up too much in the beggining, once you get espers they give you stat boosts when you level up. If you just want to finish the game then dont worry about it.

Everyone in Zozo is a liar...
Dont use Gau...
When you reach the ice plain battle, let us know, cuz that one is the first semi-frustrating battle of the game...
Have as much as possible and try out some things before getting too attached...

Steal the game and never return it to your classmate

Hmm.. Gau is a great member(stray cat early on). When you get Espers, pay attention to their level up bonus. That is the best way to make your guys stronger. If your not worried about a perfect runthrough(which i am sure your not if its your first time) than i recommend getting Edgar to a high level using bismark(an esper acquired after a trip to the capital)To make his drill and autocrossbow very, very strong. He is a pivitol character in the game and he can attack all enemies w/o the use of magic, thats why I would choose him.

The only advice I can offer is to savor the game and enjoy it! :)

So I'm at the part where the castle thing sinks in the sand, and I'm liking this game so far. I was worried that I wouldn't like any of the classic FFs ._.

South Figaro is coming up and their is a ribbon, hyper wrist and running shoes which are great to have early on.... They are hard to find but wil be a great help if you want them. Especially the ribbon which is notoriously great throughout the series.

Oh dont open all the treasure chests because if you leave them the items change and get better when you pick them up later.

I too am recently starting this game, having finally found a GBA copy for sale, and I'm enjoying the story a lot so far. I am a little annoyed with some of the game mechanics (most notably the requirement to avoid combat/levelling to get max stats and the missable monsters for the bestiary), but the game is turning out quite nice.

So thank you all for the tips as well. But, blackmage, which chests change? All of them? And at which point later should I pick them up?

OK. The figaro cave and narshe mines are the first that come to mind with the chest upgrades. especially the rune edge west of the moogle cave, that turns into a ribbon. And because of a glitch in the game any evade bonus means nothing. Also Magic evade % will count towards towards both evade and M. evade... So relics like the beads(20% evade)are useless where whitecapes and things that increase M. Evade are great.

That's true for SNES/PS1, but this has since been fixed in the GBA version.

If you can try to say on a low level for when you have proper Espers. I say this cause Espers help your stats at level up, so Behamut levels up HP 50% or something like that. Lower level = more stats when you are sure what you want to level up.

The Man
02-20-2009, 01:56 AM
Levelling up HP is worthless, since there's almost nothing that does the full 9,999 damage anyway, and levelling up MP is almost equally worthless since Osmose is so powerful in this game, and thereby renders the cost of spells pretty much irrelevant. Use something like Vigour or Magic Power that can't be raised otherwise for stat bonuses.

Saber
02-20-2009, 04:10 AM
yeah I read a guide that states you only have to level up with behamut at level 68 69 70 or some where aroun there. It was an example. I mainly leveled up my strength and magic.

If you're not one of those kinds of gamers, you can go ahead and ignore the dozens of people who talked about not leveling and what the best ways to grow your stats are. What they said is technically true, but this isn't a hard game. You don't need to obsess about your stats and min/maxing your characters or whatever. You can be an 11 year-old with absolutely no concept of how to "build" your characters and still beat the game pretty easily. I beat the game when I was 11 and I didn't even understand that the esper bonuses existed, much less did I obsess over what stats to give my guys. Just play however you'll enjoy it.

But much, much later in a game, should you decide to sleep in a certain castle with a certain swordsman in your party, make sure you have someone who knows the spell X-zone. Or at the very least, make sure you didn't leave the only magicite you learn it from back on the ship with someone else. That's a pretty sucky time in the game to have to give up and restart from the beginning -.-

Ragnarok Esper is better than Ragnarok sword.

When you get to the Floating Continent, make sure you wait until the very last second before leaving. Do this right, and don't be a dumbsmurf like Goldenboko ;)

Goldenboko

Ragnarok Sword>Ragnarok Esper.

Vermachtnis
02-21-2009, 05:58 PM
You don't have to choose any more. Pick up the Esper when given the choice and pick up the sword during the final fight. That being said, the Esper does indeed blow. But you still need it for completion data and its a one time only deal. Unlike the sword, you can challenge the final boss as much as you want. Gotta love Game+.

The Man
02-21-2009, 08:59 PM
It's much better to have the sword for the entire second half of the game (well, after you get Locke again) rather than just the final fight. Then again I guess the GBA version's mechanics work differently.

Strategy has nothing to do with winning in this game. The Figaro Bros. are a testament to this. Ultima doesn't help the argument either since the rest of the FF series has been nerfing this spell ever since VI :p

You can either blast through it or go deeper, its one of those type of games that can actually accommodate most type of players. Just take your own pace and enjoy the game.

Infact it can be annoying rather than useful most of the time when it wastes a move. Speaking of Tools dont look past the deliberator. Most people seem to ignore it like Gau but it can occasionally come in handy on some tough boss fights.

protip: you can make Celes almost invincible with Lightbringer/Illumina, Paladin Shield, Mystery Veil, Minerva Bustier, and two Zephyr Capes. It caps out her magic evasion.

Earth Dragon is ezmode, just put four angel feathers on and whack away with physical attacks. I like to use the Debilitator on Dullahan though, weakness against Holy + Sabin with two Dragon's Claws = WIN.

OH YEAH. When you get to Presenter/Angler Whelk, make sure you kill both the head and shell simultaneously. He'll drop two Dragon's Claws that way.

Doesnt holy cure him? Thats something I remember. And using Sabin's Fight command was worthless for me until the end of the game where it doesnt matter anymore.

Edgar, Sabin, Mog and Cyan are going to be the coolest/staples of parties if you use them right...but you can do that with anyone.

Nota Bene: Keep checking item shops for tools and stuff.
Nota Bene Duo: Ice Field Fight...Solo Edgar FTW!

Holy would cure him if the Debilitator didn't change his weakness like I suggested. Two Dragon's Claws does about 5-6K per attack, much more than anything else you've got to throw at him.

You don't get the offering that early in the game and by that time, if you've been using Sabin for awhile like I always do, he hits like a truck and puts out 15k+ worth of damage every round.

Absolutely. You get Bismark early enough that Sabin's roidin' by the time you get to the Dirt Dragon.

That whole sequence is amazing... Granted you can miss by actually saving Cid but I usually let the useless coot die. All you get for saving him is losing one of the most emotionally charged scenes in the game and you get to play the rest of the game guilt free. So in the end its better to let him die.

Wait til you meet up with Setzer and Cyan. The whole second half of the game really does a lot to bring the cast to life and expand upon them.

Probably really late, or already said, but I'll give it a go anyways

Even though it seems heartless, when Banon offers you to join the Returners, refuse him 3 times. You'll get a MUCH better accessory, makes the earlier portion of the game a lot easier in my opinion, and it's also one of the only two in the game !:D
