View Full Version : Take the "LOL SAT" challenge!

Aydin

So, i strolled into Barnes and Noble today looking for a book that will help me with the SATs. I found "The Laugh Out Loud Guide Ace the SAT* Exam without Boring Yourself to Sleeep!" by Charles Horn, PhD. (This is the guy who made Robot Chicken!) I bought it and thought it would be interesting (and a nice twist) to add a little humor into my studies. I opened up a page and was ROFL at the Barnes and Noble as soon as I read a word problem.

So... I thought it would be fun to challenge you all to an SAT challenge. I will have 1 question from each subject (Writing will be replaced with a common error question) and the first one to answer them all correctly will win!

The questions I am using are coming from the book and I do not own them in any way. All credit goes to Charles Horn, PhD.

Uh oh... I just realized that all three of you were wrong on the algebra question! I gave Momiji a hug accidentally.

Remember, the values in between the lines "|" are absolute values meaning that there are more than one answer.

So, in the equation:
|x - 6| < 3

The solution must be worked twice like this

Either
x - 6 < 3

or,
-(x - 6) < 3

So that was a mistake on my part. Sorry... ^_^;

|x - 6| < 3

2 < 3

GIVE HIM HIS HUG BACK

Also if you plug 4 in for your two examples:
Either
x - 6 < 3

or,
-(x - 6) < 3
4 - 6 = -2
-2 < 3

-(4-6) = -(-2) = 2
2 < 3

WE WERE RIGHT

Critical Reading!

"You snooze, you die!" says a new study in this month's issue of the journal SLEEP. According to a new study, apparently funded by Maxwell House, people who sleep the recommended eight hours a day actually have a higher death rate than those who sleep significantly fewer hours. When asked about his findings, the study's chief scientist said "Must...stay...awake. Must...stay...awake. huh? Wha? Who's there?Get your stinking paws off me, you damn dirty ape!" Ironically, the journal SLEEP is excellent bedtime reading.

The primary purpose of the passage is to...
A) snidely criticize a policy decision.
B) factually explain a scientific approach.
C) humorously comment on a news story.
D) wittily defend a health study.
E) fictionally quote an authority.

The state of mind of the study's chief scientist at the time of his quote can be best characterized as
A) altered
B) livid
C) lucid
D) logical
E) inebriated
