I heard that the latest Microsoft Update is supposed to take care of this, so I updated everything yesterday.

That being said, it may be a good idea to not connect to the internet tomorrow, just in case. I don't know all of the details, so better safe than sorry.

What's known so far is that on April 1, all infected computers will come under the control of a master machine located somewhere across the web, at which point anything's possible.

If you've had an automatic update anytime recently through Windows Update then you should be safe. This worm disables auto updates. I think you can still do manual installs, though.

It'll be interesting to see what it does when it activates. afaik they haven't really pinpointed its purpose, just its activation dates and symptoms so far.

Værn
03-31-2009, 07:00 PM
You know, this raises an important question. How do they know about it when it's not supposed to begin spreading until tomorrow? I think one of the people researching it must have been the one that wrote it, and it only "researching" it to look less suspicious.
Or has it already been spreading for a while, and only has yet to activate?

(If it exists, of course.)

rubah
03-31-2009, 07:07 PM

I think they meant that whoever controls the "master" computer will activate it manually on the day, assuming it's true, I doubt it's an automatic time bomb virus.

Gotta give them credit though, the idea of spreading to a small span of computers across the world to act as hosts to spread across networks everywhere in a quick span of time is pretty cool anyway you look at it.

Bit of an update to put you guys at ease, aslong as you have the October Microsoft update patch KB958644, then your immune to it, if your unsure, then do the following

Tools > Windows Update > View Update History

then look for it

Also, just to be safe, do a full system scan to make sure that you dont ALREADY have it, several Anti-viruses were patched to detect it and severals programs were developed specifically to detect JUST that, look em up.

Not going on your computer on April 1 won't save you at all because Conficker will try and download the new payload any time after the 31st of March 2009. So, even if you stay off your computer on the 1st of April, the worm will try and update itself the next day.

If you really want to be safe, just use a conficker removal tool or simply reformat your computer.

Looks like we got lucky, but it DID happen, Variant D was given new instructions a few hours ago, HOWEVER just as other sites have suggested, go back and find my post, make sure you have the October Patch, make sure your Anti-virus is up to date, and aslong as you DONT already have it, your safe.

The patch/up to date Anti-virus are a wall, the Worm cannot go past that wall unless it was already there before you put the wall up OR if you open the "backdoor" for it (i.e, plugging in a USB thats infected or opening a connection to an infected network)

Well everyone should all just update their antivirus manually every once in a while, that way they won't ever have to worry about this when the cornflicker 4 is eventually made.

The cornflicker virus is a delayed activation program. It gets in your computer, and then eventually activates at a much later date, similarly as to the herpes virus functions. :p
