That they have them and are standing around Coneria when the game begins is just one of the conceits of the story. These things weren't thought out down to the last detail back in 1987.

Most likely, though, they acquired them while on adventures.

In my opinion, the Warriors of Light were destined to carry the crystals and wielded them as their birthright. Maybe it's something like how you wake up one day and suddenly discover something that wasn't there before?

There is no official statement on this aspect of the story. It is possible that Dissidia Final Fantasy will offer a glimpse of how the developers might interpret that simple story.

No really, probably something they had laying around like an old heirloom and when evil rose, the crystals "spoke" to them and told them to see the princess/prince/king or whoever was in charge of the castle at the moment.
