Alright, I can't seem to remember how to factor out this perfect square trinomial. Here's the equation: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v388/42091/MATHSUX.jpg I know how to complete other basic ones, I just can't find the common monomial they all have so I can take that out and factor the left overs. Any help is welcome. Thanks Edit: I checked the back of the book and the answer is (U + 4V)^2 if that's any help.

Your equation is set up like this: Ax^2 + Bxy + Cy^2

Here's a shortcut, take number A and multiply it by number C, then see if you can find two factors of the number you get that add up to or subtract to number B. Then you'll have your answer. Be sure to reduce your equation first, though.

Thanks for all the help guys, but I found out what I was doing wrong. I completely forgot that 16v^2 would end up as 4v*4v in the process I\'ve been using to factor equations.

(a + b)2 = a2 + 2ab + b2
Just remember that. :p
