In the EoFF Event Committee, we decided that The Lounge needs excitement, so we're going to be doing Eyes on Obscure Musical Artists.

Basically, each week (with the exception of this one, as we're going to do three to start off with a bang and give examples to people - unless people really rather like the multiple bands a week, then we'll stick with that!), we're going to showcase a relatively obscure/not terribly mainstream musical artist/band that we want to introduce to EoFF.

Anyone can participate in this. Just PM me an artist, and (not mandatory but greatly appreciated) a short little blurb about the artist, or even just some recommended songs, or maybe a sort of "You'll like this band if you like bands such as x, y, z", whatever. Any genre works. We'll dedicated one week to them.

This is a good thread for people who like to be introduced to new music, but find that last.fm gives them the same sort of music over and over, and would like some fresh recommendations. Got it? :cactuar:

Okay then! As I said, we'd be doing THREE! So let's go for it:

William Fitzsimmons:

This is most definitely acoustic-indie, with a bit of piano and electronic infused in it. What immediately interested me about this artist was that his songs are almost entirely about his family issues - his issues with his father leaving him and his brother at a young age, and his divorce with his wife, for example. They're extremely direct as well - William Fitzsimmons was just in the process of finishing his degree in psychology when he decided to record his first two albums in his home on his own - as a result of his career background. The lyrics don't delve into metaphors all that much in many songs, but it works for him, because the frankness is really touching. If hard-pressed for a word, I'd say his music is very much doleful, but not depressing.

My personal favorite song of his is one about his divorce with his wife off of the album Goodnight, "Leave Me By Myself". The lyrics really hit me:

"If you sign the papers when I'm not around,
try from now to use your maiden name
And don't find someone who treats you like I did
You deserve a better man than me
I know you'll leave me by myself."

The artists that I'd most associate with William Fitzsimmons are Iron & Wine, Death Cab For Cutie, and Gregory and the Hawk.

Here are two of is his more well-known songs:

Passion Play (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVMQ1kYng-w)
Funeral Dress (my second favorite song of his) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnYvRLFnFts)

Willie Dixon:

I am in the mood to give tribute to a overlooked forefather of Rock 'N Roll. Some of you may already know the man, who deserves to be a legend. He inspired some of the most influential bands of the earlier rock years. Cream, Grateful Dead, The Rolling Stones, and Led Zeppelin are just a few. He was a crucial part in making Rock 'N Roll what it is today. Thank you Dixon.

Schoolyard Heroes

Right, Rye has almost certainly provided you with an absolute KITTY so it's time for :bou::bou::bou::bou: to get serious right here: Schoolyard Heroes rock the smurf out and are severely awesome to the point that I want to wound people.

Bury the Tooth of the Hydra and a Skeleton Army Will Arise (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbgzymItJ-Y) - Favorite song of mine from their first album
Centaur - Half-Man Half-Motorcycle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTpKsxmcWIQ&feature=related) - Probably my fave from their second album.
They have a third album! To my dismay I have barely listened to it, which is something I am going to rectify right now.

Similar band: Tsunami Bomb

I figured I'd put a up a poll to see which bands you guys enjoyed of this list. Feedback is good too - would you like to see multiple bands a week, or just one? Enjoy! :kaoclove:

Well obviously I like the ones I put forth xD And you've already had me listen to Fitzsimmons, who I like. That Willie Dixon fellow is mighty good too, though!

So I'm happy with this thread so far, at least :)

I already liked Schoolyard Heroes (I'm an indie kid), but Fitzsimmons is new. I like him. Can we submit more than one band? I know so many obscure artists I love.

Yeah, definitely. Submit as many as you want, the more, the better, because I need lots of bands for each each week. Also, glad you like Fitzsimmons! :jess:

Not obscure enough. They all have Wikipedia pages.

I shall rectify this situation posthaste.

The band Huntingfield is really good, but extremely obscure, IMO. So is Fair.

Ohhh. I like them all three, although I already knew Billy Fitz since you started spamming him :jess:

I'll be sure to submit something for this later!

Oh, Willie Dixon, hot damn. Hell yes. Awesome to see him recognised. I'll submit something. Probably.

Nice! I'm glad you guys mostly like these so far!

Also, please PM any submissions/recommendations to me, don't post them in the thread, that'll ruin the surprise!
