I just managed to hack a cheat device code that lets you customize any equipment ability with just a single potion for each ability.

I have versions of the code for both PAL and American releases, although I can't guarantee the American one works properly (it should do, though). I also can't guarantee it works on anything but Codebreaker version 7 and above, but you're welcome to try (if you're not using Codebreaker or another device that supports raw format codes, you'll need to convert the codes to your cheat device... feel free to ask me if you need help with doing that).

PAL:
40AD4198 007D0002
00012000 00000000

American:
40ADF298 00780002
00012000 00000000

Out of curiosity, does this code include the Ribbon Ability for armor?

As long as it exists in your version of the game, yes.
However, the code won't allow you to customize Ribbon on the american version, because Ribbon doesn't exists there.

Me and a couple of other hackers are currently trying to work on a code that adds Ribbon to the American version. We already know how to add new abilities to the PAL version, but there's still a few things that need clearing up for doing this in the American version.

If you're interested, two other codes I can do now would be ones to allow customizing of Capture and No AP. Let me know if you want them. I can also do ones to allow customizing weapon abilities on armour, and vice versa. (They still work 100% the same.)

I was under the impression that the ability existed, but that the customization option for it was removed. Just as the ability existed in FFVIII, but the way to acquire it was removed (no Chocobo World in the US until the PC version). I thought the ability itself was still in the code, there was just no way to access it in-game, which is why I was asking about it in the first place. I was curious to whether you could access the code segment via your new cheat. But, if I'm wrong, oh well. I don't own a Code Breaker for the PS2 anyway, so it doesn't much matter to me.

Okay, I've got the code for Ribbon, and while it does require some type of cheat device, it doesn't need to be Code Breaker.

The following code should add Ribbon to the American version. Note that you must keep this code on at all times while using Ribbon.

Unlike the code above, it should work on ALL cheat devices, but you do still need to convert it to your device's format if you're not using Codebreaker or another device that supports raw codes.

Adding Ribbon's data
20AED594 04018114
20AED598 00301B63
20AED59C 000A1B6A
20AED5A0 01B41B6C
20AED5A4 000A1BA8
20AED5DC 00FFFFFF
20AED5E0 00FFFFFF
20AED5EC 000000FF
20AED5F8 00004000

Adding Ribbon to the customize menu
20ADF654 80530002
20ADF658 00632035

Setting Ribbon's name
20AEFB24 71786100
20AEFB28 3A7D7E71
20AEFB2C 003A3A3A

You need to use all three sets for it to work (well, the last one is optional, Ribbon will be called "Curse Ward" if you don't). I made this by overwriting the Curse Ward ability, which is 100% inaccessible without cheating. Note that this means if you then load your save without the code, Ribbon will turn into Curse Ward. (Don't freak out if this happens - as soon as you put the code on again, it'll turn back.)

On the subject of FF8, I don't know about the American version but the European version certianly did have Chocobo World support. By importing a PocketStation, you could indeed play it and get Ribbon.

Perhaps it did then. I'm not sure. I know it had the ability to link to Chocobo World intact, but I didn't think it was compatible with the non-Japanese versions of the game. Not that it mattered much, since getting one of those things outside Japan was a pain in the butt.

This is interesting code work, I admit. Good job on the hacking.

It's a shame that Square-Enix feels the need to cut things like that from the American versions of their games though. Just like we lost out on Anima's Overdrive and the Dark Aeons.

It wasn't cut, it was never in there to begin with. The original Japanese version didn't have them either.

They were added when the International version was made, which is a common practice to add extras to. The only reason PAL (European) got them is because it was released after the international version, so they decided they may as well add them into it too.
