I'm a very very casual gamer when it comes to this game. It's my fav FF so it's pretty much the only one I revisit.
In fact, Poor zidane was riding on that elevator to get to the top of linblum castle for hours. I just left the game playing without pausing it.
I try to do all the chocobo hot cold games and all the extra little minigames. I look for every box and do everything I really can. I just have fun with it. 'Cept that damn hippaul, I could only get him to level 40.
I take my time and try to enjoy every last bit of the game!
How do you play it?

Grind for abilities (though not for levels, they come as a matter of course) and try to do each minigame as and when I encounter them, then curse myself for forgetting.
I always job the hunting festival because I like the prize you get if Freya wins.
Ouch!

I like to max out Dragon Crest, Frog Drop, and Thievery so I can bludgeon through everything with Zidane, Freya, Quina, and Steiner.
That should give you a vague idea.

I'm bad when it comes to abilities. I don't grind, but I won't upgrade my equipment until I've learned it. Going through the game with stuff from a couple towns ago is annoying.
But I do grab all of Quina's Blue Magic ASAP. That's just fun.

I never level quina. I hate having to get all the blue magic stuff. :/ That's the one thing I never do.

I do frequently stop and grind for whatever abilities my equipment offers, and I always fulfill the entire Chocobo quest and unearth all the Dead Pepper treasures. Once I can get to Daguerro, I use the Grand Dragons exclusively, naturally maxing out Dragon Crest in the process. I also max out Frog Drop because IS CAN GOOD EAT, but I usually run out of patience powering up Thievery.
Screw the Athlete Queen, too. I don't think I've ever gone nuts enough to get all the Tetra Master cards, either.
Once you get to choose your own party, I always go with Freya, Quina, and Salamander. Most people seem to ignore them in favor of the starting characters, but I swear they're the ultimate team. :freya: :quina: :salamander:

I'll grind for abilities, though that's it. I don't even grind to be honest, I just make sure that I have them before a certain point. I certainly don't bother to grind incessantly as soon as the opportunity to gain a new ability arises. I never bother with Blue Magic. Tetra Master is something I'll involve myself with when I'm doing well. I don't like the game but if I've won a few games then I'll continue playing and building a collection up. Once I've lost a few games my enthusiasm quickly disappears.

I am an over grinder. I am a sub-plot finder. I am a mini-game flocky. I am a Chocobo jockey.
Also some people call me the space cowboy.

This is the only FF game where I really liked all the mini games and did them all as soon as I could. I definitely got all the Tetra Master cards and then spent a bunch of time leveling them.

Same here. That's the main reason this is my favorite game. All of the mini-games are so fun. I loved the friendly monster thing as well. That and Ozma are the only two things I've still not beaten in this game, I think.

I try to do everything but I never do things I don't feel would be fun. I've never attempted the Excalibur 2 quest as I rather find IX's plot and gameplay to be really splendid and I don't think I could ever rush through it all.
I don't play Tetra Master but its because I quickly get bored. Beyond that, I try to do everything though I have never successfully completed the Coffee quest, Mognet, or the Jump rope game... I really need to pop this game in again...
Never tried to get Excalibur II, and I always forget about the Coffee sidequest. Other than that, I give it a good hard shot to max everything.
I never did the coffee one or the jump rope mini game - I forgot about those. But I loved doing Mognet, and I did complete that.

the first time I played ff9 I ended up spending at least six hours on jump rope at the beginning. Sometimes I get obsessed with these little games. The same way Miriel got me obsessed with Flood It!

Blue Mage is my favorite Final Fantasy class, so, naturally, I strive to make Quina eat every enemy type that my party encounters!
During my last playthrough, I completed the Mognet and Chocobo Hot & Cold side quests for the first time and attempted to defeat Ozma, but... :mymelfacepalm:

I have to steal everything. Especially all items from bosses, I can't kill them until they have no items left on their body! It's a bit frustrating when there's a very low probability of getting an item, like the fairy flute and it's 1/256 chance or something.
I never play tetra master, and I always do all the chocobo stuff. Best chocobo sidequest eva.

i liked how this game had multiple items you could steal from pretty much every monster.

I'm also obsessive about stealing everything. I'm obsessive about getting a good card collection, I have multiple times attempted to achieve the highest rank, but only once have I gone the whole way with it (you have to get one of every card, and no two cards with the same arrow combination... yeah). I have gone for stat maxing a couple of times but I always find it drains the fun out of the game so I usually end up doing moderate stat raising instead.
I don't think I've gone one playthrough (maybe my first) without beating Ozma and Hades, and I always fully complete the Chocobo treasure hunting. I've completed the coffee and Mognet sidequests a few times. I've raced Hippaul to level 80 to receive the Athlete Queen once, and I'm never doing that again xD I've never gone for King of Jump Rope, I usually go for 200 and if I fail after that I just consider myself done with that.
I actually don't remember if I go for all Blue Magic, but I think I must've done it at one point. I always get all equipment abilities, though, and I level at least past 60 mostly. I tend to max out all the fixed-damage abilities.
I've never attempted to get the Excalibur II, though. :D

This thread reminds me that we all should admire SeedRankLou for doing everything in one playthrough (perfect game).

Yes congrats to him ^_^ I should try to get everything =o but I get distracted easily and would never be able to get Excalibur II :P

wow, I guess I got lucky when I got highest rank because I sure didn't know the arrows had to be in different directions.

Are you sure you got the very highest? I can't actually remember what it says, but there are many different for various situations (like, getting a certain amount of X and A modifiers in the card stats might give you a special rank). Seeing how much trouble I've had getting all unique arrow combinations, it just seems incredibly improbable that you'd get it by chance.

Oh I don't know, I thought you were talking about being S rank. I haven't played ff9 in years so I don't know what my actual number score is.
Freya

I never attempted to get the rank and all the cards. Is it that hard?
Rantz
07-25-2009, 01:19 PM
Oh, S rank isn't very hard to get if you do the H&C quest. What I was talking about is the rank that's in the upper right when looking at the card menu. And no, it's not that it's hard so much as it is a lot of work, and most of all, a lot of keeping track of what arrow combinations you already have, unless you want to have to look through all your cards every time you get a new one to check for duplicates. xD I'm not sure why I do that.

Oh yah, stealing X_x thats always a peach.
I have only finished the jump rope game once if memory serves me.

Yea, I don't think you need all 100 cards to get S rank. Getting them all leveled to EAEE with different arrows is pretty ridiculous.

I'm stretching the limits of the topic now, but for the record there's no gain outside of card battles in leveling them up beyond getting the modifier to A, and the cards have different upper limits (I don't think any card can become EAEE).

I always thought Athlete Queen was quite easy to get. Screw the Jump rope thing, though. I get the good cards, then I leave. :)
Hilgigas was a bastard to steal from. I went through 18 Trances overall until Zidane finally manned up and got the Flute.
