I'm a little confused as to what ovelias role was. I though since orinas was going to succeed the throne, the dispute was over who would be his regent, goltanna or larg. What did ovelia have to do with anything that would have people want her dead?

Larg is Queen Louveria's brother and Orinus's uncle, so if Orinus were accepted to the throne, the regency would default to Larg. For someone like Goltanna to rule, an eligible heir would have to be appointed who isn't connected to the Queen. Ovelia's only vital function is that she fills that role.

The knights in the prologue that attack the monastery are actually largs soldiers disguised as goltannas who were ordered to kill her right? In order to have goltana executed for treason? Wouldn't that seem odd since she is his way to the throne?

The knight at Orbonne just says, "Surrender the princess," since Goltanna would put Ovelia on the throne even against her own will. She surrounded herself with bodyguards and attempted to hide at the monastery because she didn't want to be exploited by either side of the conflict.

She didn't hide herself at the monastery, she was sent to live there by larg. Agrias is part of the royal guard who was sent to escort her. And gafgarion, ramza and co were hired escorts. She wasn't hidden.

She was being protected from Goltanna, I guess is the point.
