I think this would be a good way to find out about some movies that some people wouldn't normally watch by having other members post about what they saw last and their take on it.

So, I will start by saying that the last movie I saw was Stargate, made in 1994. It started out fairly interesting and within half an hour I found myself nodding off. Most of the movie is comprised of sand people running around speaking in unintelligible tongues and walking around the desert.

Anyways here is the beginning portion of the movie; it's about a discovery of some sort of large ring made out of a material that's not from Earth during a dig back in 1928 Egypt. Flash forward roughly 65 years later and you have James Spader talking about how the Egyptians didn't actually build the pyramids. Everyone thinks he's a whackjob and he ends up going broke and losing his sciencey-type grants. Then some wrinkled old prune pulls up to him and asks him iif he wants a job translating Egyptian writing.

He does some translating and it turns out that this giant ring is actually something called a...

wait for it...

stargate(!), and that it can take you to distant galaxies via technobabble explanations. Anyways they of course get trapped when they use it and wind up with the sand people on a distant planet. After an hour of sheer boredom and stagnant plot development this weird alien guy who really looks like a girl comes down and starts kicking the sand people's asses. Turns out he is Ra or so he says. A bunch of things happen and alot of sand people die and eventually a big bomb goes off and the credits roll.

The last movie I watched was From Dusk till Dawn. It was surprisingly good. It had every thing a good movie needs: Boobs, Gore, and Explosions. Towards the end the movie really picked up. Tarintino's acting was good. He was a convincing psycho:).

The Spirit

Acting ... 4/10
Lighting Composition... 10/10
Set Design ... 10/10
Costumes ... 6/10
Overall ... 7/10

A very artsy film. I haven't read the graphic novel it's based on so I can't say if it follows it accurately, but I thought it was decent in terms of storytelling. The children they casted to play little Spirit and little Sam were very close to the adult actors. I rarely see that happening in movies. The fight sequences were pretty boring in terms of choreography and action.

The set design and lighting were of course amazing as they were in Sin City. I don't think I've seen such superb light composition in awhile. It really helped to add to the atmosphere of the film. Some of the costumes were pretty cool, but many of the costumes of the main villain named The Octopus (who is played by Samuel L. Jackson) were a bit too over-the-top. The clones The Octopus made were annoying as I don't know what and Scarlett Johansson's character could have been easily distinguishable. Her character was boring and clearly just another pretty face with no depth. She even seemed bored with her role.

Sam played by Eva Mendes could also fit that description, but her character at least has a back story. Most of the actors were averagely decent or just plain boring in this film except for Samuel L. Jackson who was entirely too campy. In a funny way! In terms of being a superhero movie, it was not the best and definitely not as good as Marvel movies like Spiderman -- the first one only. However, I was impressed with the neo-noir look and it kept me entertained to an extent so I've gotta give it a passing grade.

Logan's Run

As a pre-Star Wars sci-fi flick, it does occasionally dip into the valley of Star Trek cheese with regards to special effects. There's only a few times when it's overwhelming, though, and for the most part the characters and story are at the forefront, not the special effects. Plot-wise, though, it leaves a bit to be desired with a few things that you're just supposed to accept, like who is actually handing down the orders to keep all the stuff going.

Not too bad of a movie though. 7/10.

Last movie I saw was The Mist last weekend. It's based on a story by Stephen King, so I had high hopes, but the writing for the movie was pretty disappointing. Every plot development just seemed so forced, as if they wrote a story separate from the book and had to go back and quickly edit some things in.

The explanation for the mist was equally forced and anticlimactic, mentioned once with no build up or development and then forgotten. The creatures in the mist were not remotely frightening and their inability to break glass or damage buildings or vehicles was frustratingly unbelievable. The ending was decently unexpected and a good twist, though also seemed kind of haphazardly done like the rest of the writing.

Overall: 5.5/10 (I couldn't decide between a 5 or a 6)

EDIT: I should qualify that I was a bit drunk when I watched this, but still quite lucid.

Watched Big last night.

I haven't seen this movie in a number of years, and I was pleasantly surprised by how well this movie has held up. Sure, the logic behind it is a bit flawed, but it was also arguably Tom Hanks' finest comedic hour. It's pretty hard to be bored by this movie, and even though many clones of this movies exist (many body-switch/transformation movies like this existed in the 80's, all based off of 1976's Freaky Friday), it's still quite memorable.

Saw Hot Fuzz with my sister a couple days ago.

Amazing movie that Hot Fuzz. The acting was quite good, and the jokes were hilarious. Also, that action scene at the end, regardless of being a parody of action movies, was one of the greatest action sequences I've ever scene.

Flags of our Fathers.

A pretty amazing war movie, and one which made me think about it for the rest of the night after I had watched it. However the last few minutes flagged, I felt, and were too much of a "tying up loose ends" kind of thing.

Still, excellent movie and well worth watching. I'm going to try and watch Letters from Iwo Jima soon too, I hear it's better.

I can't imagine why you expected anything else.

NECRO: which fight scene was your fave? The one where she was making Bruce Lee noises filled me with glee, but overall I think I have to go with the beat boy boss battle. I love when she starts to mime his tics, and that final kick basically seals the deal.

I can't wait for Raging Phoenix.

neo: yah man good film. have you seen shaun of the dead?

Own both of them actually. What I loved most about Shaun of the dead, is thats a very likely scenario to happen if there ever actually was a Zombie attack like that.

Yes, even the Jerry Springer thing at the end. XD

I still need to see Run Fatboy Run though.

Edit: I should also mention now the last Movie I have watched is the TV special Lupin III Vs. Detective Conan, with Subtitles since I don't think there was an English version.

It really wasn't them versing each other though, so much as they both ended up int he same situation and assisted each other. Overall though, I feel it captured all the characters used from both series very well, and the story and plot were very entertaining, though a bit more predictable then some of the better Conan Cases.

Overall, great movie, and I'd suggest for fans of either series.

The Ugly Truth is the worst romcom I have ever seen. Romantic comedies is not a genre where the expectations are even that high. So to sink sooo far below it is pretty fucking bad. Wow. It was horrible.

Other recent films I've seen...

The Hangover - Didn't expect to like it, but it was fantastic. Had me laughing like crazy during certain parts. Really enjoyable. There's one scene that still cracks me up just by thinking about it.

500 Days of Summer - Super cute film, thoughtful, quirky and innovative.

I watched a pretty odd French animation called Fantastic Planet last night. Very unique compared to anything made in the west or east. The music is also very interesting to listen to and the artstyle is completely original. The story wasn't anything to cry home about but it moved things along and allowed us to see some pretty trippy stuff along the way. Really recommend the film to anyone that is tired of the same rehashed 3D animation we are given these days.

My only complaint was that it was too short.

'Up' you know after Wall.e I found that it'd be extremely hard for Pixar to make another cute film. I spent the whole entire film looking at wall.e and sighing 'awwwwwwwwwwwwww' 'awww' 'awwww he's sooooo cuuuute' >.<
So when my bf and I decided to watch 'Up' I wasn't that excited UNTIL they showed some short subject: Partly cloud, to get you in the mood for fluffiness. So the filme actually began and they were the most emotional 5 minutes in my whole life, I looked liked a pregnant girl with mood swings: I cried, then I laughed, then I cried again... the rest of the film was just laughing and smiling because even though mr. Fredricksen had a tough life, which we all have, we all were hoping that the end would be good, the end turned out to be exactly what we were hoping for and THANK GOD. It may be cliché, the end, but the base of the story, which gave sense to the adventure it was very well executed.
Besides... those graphics made me and my bf drool, the feather of the bird, the hundreds of dogs that appeared on the film, even mr. Fredricken beard was excelent.

Now I've read some critics that said that the first part was really harsh for kids, due to all the emotions, even though I think it might be too real for kids, when Mufasa died in "The Lion king" didn't we cry? Wasn't it harsh for Simba to lose its parents? Then it was also harsh for mr. Fredricken to lose his wife...

9.5/10... Gogo Pixar!

The last movie I saw was Marley & Me. I thought it was a sweet movie, didn't have much of a story and it didn't really know whether it wanted to be a romantic comedy, family drama or a movie about human/dog relationships.. but, I still thought it was a sweet movie with some nice moments.

I remember enjoying Jennifer Aniston in it, actually. Also, the end had me crying like a baby. Got very close to personal experiences.

All in all a neat little movie about life and human/dog relationships I guess. Far from being a masterpiece but still rather enjoyable.

I wasn't too hot on Let the Right One In when I first watched it, but I think it's one of those films that grows on you. Public Enemies.

It's a good film, but it's not something you should pay to see in the cinema. It's worth maybe a fiver when on DVD. Having said that, it is a good film, I just don't agree with paying more than a tenner for a movie. Even when you know the history behind Dillinger, you still find yourself hoping he somehow manages to escape. Bear in mind that it is actually a fairly slow film. The adverts and trailers make it all seem to be about bank robberies and gunfights, but it's not. It is not an action flick. It's about the violence as much as The Prestige is about the magic. The main part about the film is about the drama of John Dillinger's life when he wasn't getting rich.

Nope but the fact that Miyazaki's works have inspired many at Disney, I think that says something. The bonus content in Spirited Away mentions how they went to the flight scenes in Miyazaki's work to help inspire them while working on Fantasia 2000. Basically, it is sorta agreed across the board that Miyazaki is brilliant. Disney does a real good job of dubbing the studio Ghibli movies too. :D

Last movie I saw was 銀色の髪のアギト (Origin: Spirits of the Past). Was a pretty decent movie that explored the theme of man vs nature and to the extent humanity will try and control nature. It was not brilliant but still a good movie.

Wendy and Lucy. Some random low-budget or indie or film festival or some crap movie from a collective called mongrel media or something. I watched another one of their movies called One Week before Wendy and Lucy, and it was pretty good. Wayyyy too Canadian (but this is a good thing).

Wendy and Lucy is amazing. It's about a girl (Wendy) and her dog (Lucy) and their journey to Alaska. Basically the story starts with them at random point X on their journey. Wendy's car breaks down in a random town and things just start to go to :bou::bou::bou::bou: - and she has no money! She gets arrested for stealing dog food for Lucy, and that's when stuff gets really depressing because: (minor spoiler) Lucy is missing from the pole outside the grocery store after Wendy is released from fingerprinting etc..

It is a really well made film. If I remember right, there isn't any music in it at all and the dialog is pretty sparse too. The girl who plays Wendy is amaziiiiiing~~ There is one specific scene where she sleeps in a forest and a crazy guy comes up to her and she has a little freak out after. Honestly two of the best scenes in any movie I've seen.

Overall, the director does the whole "this isn't a feature film therefore has to have extended shots of dark forest with train noises in the background" thing a lot. And by that I mean some scenes drag on for too long - but the plot and characters and acting way than make up for it.

THE END IS THE MOST HEARTBREAKING THING EVER.

Chris Rock directs, stars, and has written the screenplay for this movie. It's very funny in parts, and the overall story is quite good, but something is missing from the film overall that I can't put my mouth on. When I first saw the trailer for this film, I thought this would be a very comedic, yet quirky story about a man who was mentally deranged and socially awkward. I was right. Ryan Gosling never ceases to amaze me in whatever role he's in. I actually I liked this better than his role in the Half Nelson. You can tell he's put a lot of effort in to making his mentally delusional character come alive.

He plays the role of a loner named Lars, who comes from a troubled family where his mother abandoned him, his brother and their father. Ryan made some great choices for the character; one of which is an occasional eye twitch. He also takes me back to his Mickey Mouse days of singing and dancing when he does his own awkward, yet humorous rendition of Nat King Cole's "L.O.V.E." He definitely outshines the rest of the cast whom are all just secondary characters as far as I'm concerned and not very interesting.

Although this film definitely has it's points of hilarity, there are some moments where you may want to grab your Kleenex. It may seem like a dry, slowly paced tale with dark colors, but in truth it's a feel good film after you get through the taboo of having a relationship with a sex doll and the inclinations of delusion disorder. However, this storyline is not entirely unique since the loner gets a sex doll thing has been done before in movies like Love Object, so I can't really give it an originality score aside from the unique mannerisms and wardrobe of Lars. Nonetheless, it was entertaining and in part, an interesting character study.

Fargo. Different way of telling the story and the first movie to successfully turn my stomach with little gore. This movie is based on a true story of kidnapping and murder. Brilliantly done, I hope to watch it again sometime in a theater, Yaw.

Last movie I saw in theaters was (500) Days of Summer. It made me break up with my boyfriend...which was a good thing! 9/10 for creativeness and honesty =)

Last movie I saw at homerss was The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. At first, I really liked it. Something about the atmosphere, the lighting and music and such, that made it so awesome I wanted to live in it forever. But then it just kept going, and going, and going...and the ending was stupid. And impossible. But OK, I still give it a 8/10, because it was a fantasy. It just seemed that the first half thye took their time on and did great with, but then they slacked off with the end half =/

Yeah, the lighting for the film was great. Lots of use of warm hues and soft light made me feel very relaxed and drawn to the movie. It didn't have harsh, exciting light that made my heart race or make me feel uneasy. I also agree that it dragged on a bit. There were probably a few parts that could have been edited out. I thought the scenes with the dude who kept getting striked by lighting were funny.

Lost in Translation I felt was very endearing depiction of cross generational friendship in an alien (Tokyo) ... Sofia Coppola takes after her father and her visual direction is amazing. Its not particularly a fast pace story as each scene is meant to draw the out the characters personality in the unfamiliar environment.Plus the music is subtle and but you can feel its presence and meaning of it for certain scenes.

I give the movie a perfect score

The Taking of Pelham 123 confirms Denzel Washington as an absolutely brilliant actor to watch on-screen. John Travolta's role as "RYDER" synergizes just right with Denzel's Garber too.

Visually the movie tends to delve into heavy use of high shutter speed constantly which may put the watcher off a little... and the ridiculous premise of a high-speed cash transfer by car, though fun (and makes for some crash calls) is of course, ridiculous.

I recently watched Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance, and as a huge Evangelion fan I can say that I was very impressed. The story has been almost COMPLETELY re-done at this point and encourages viewers like myself to keep watching this series of films. The new storylines seem to have great potential and could end up being just as good as the original plot. Not to mention the updated animation is awesome! Rei seems to have more personality than before, which at first I thought I wouldn't like but in all honesty it isn't that bad. Both Rei and Asuka's feelings for Shinji are also more obvious this time around, which also isn't that much of a bad thing.

Overall I walked away from 2.0 a happy fan. That and District 9 are my two favorite movies this year.

I think it's a delightful horror movie. Classic Sam Raimi in so many ways. It's wonderfully changes between being scary, funny and campy - and it just does such a good job at combining all of those things into something "B-movielicious" in all the right ways. (500) Days Of Summer.

Its an amazing film. Its a Romance Comedy, and I thought it did the blend of a actual love story and comedy just right.

I love how the film is in non-Chronalogical order, The start of the film shows the Lead man unhappy (Day 468) then shows him just seeing the love of his life (Day 1). I like the transition between the days, when that particular day is happy, the background goes a green happy colour, but when its a bad day (Particularly days 300-489) it shows a morbid dark gray colour.

Out of 10, Id give it a 9/10.

The Final Destination

Overall: 4/10

To begin with, the writers pretty much follow the same formula they used for the other two. If you enjoy watching gore and violence you won't be disappointed. The movie features a barrage of scenes filled with horrible deaths in graphic detail. As with the previous films, a lot of people die from freak accidents, but a premonition from one sole person saves a select few people who then become personal targets of the grim reaper. As you can see, this has definitely become a rehash. I wasn't surprised by some of the deaths in the slightest bit like I was with a few scenes from the previous installments. With this one, you can pretty much expect who is going to die and when (and sometimes how) almost throughout the entire film.

On the other hand, the acting was horrible. In fact, some B movie horror film actors are better but hey, that's what you get for hiring no name actors. The only face I recognized was Nick Zano who is also in other crappy films like Beverly Hills Chihuahua and College. Bottom line is, don't go see this. It's not worth the extra money for the ticket to see it in 3D or at all for that matter. I can't say I'm too disappointed, however, because I didn't expect much from any of the three films. Yet, it was definitely great for a time killing (and I.Q. killing) movie -- for that reason I give it a generous score.

Just for fun, see movies I've rated lower than this:

Meet the Spartans: 2/10
Zombie Nation: 1/10

The Ugly Truth is a very well put together romcom (as in, what the audience wants to happen happens, and a rofl from time to time). The humor appeals to tastes of a variety meaning the standard non-romcom kind of male guy would be able to laugh at least twice. My only problem with the film is the same with just about all common romance/romcom films... NOTHING UNEXPECTED HAPPENS.

Films this week overall:

The Ugly Truth 3/5 (Above average for it's genre, a fun film to watch at least once or twice... if that's what you're hoping for)

Taking of Pelham 123 3.5/5 (Average drama saved by great casting, acting and choice of character roles)

But it's grown on me after all these years and I can't even imagine the movie with out them. I'd still like to find a copy of the old dub though. :(

Blood: The Last Vampire (2009)

I thought it was gonna be bad so I may like it because my expectations were so low going in. Some of the action was campy and the stylized speed variations during weren't as organized as they could have been; if the intention was to give the movie a chaotic feel, it didn't work out. At some points I was reminded of old Kung Fu movies. I like the music, it has definite nods to the original film, but no tracks actually return.

They squished the high school plot in too fast, but I guess they needed space for all this new crap they wanted to put in.

I enjoyed the acting though, most of the characters hung on between insanity and normalcy. Whether that effect was achieved intentionally or because they weren't taking their roles seriously doesn't matter to me because it worked for me.

7.5

The Day The Earth Stood Still (remake).

Not the atrocity which I feared, but a very long way from the classic original. Largely, I think the movie would have most been helped by being 20 minutes longer and actually fleshing characters out a little. I can see the skeleton of the thing and it's not irredeemable but the short length of the movie meant the only way it worked was to make a lot of people hold idiot balls.

It was always going to be flawed because why didn't they just show up and say "so guys, there aren't many habitable worlds in the galaxy*. Keep yours usable and we'll give you freaking awesome technology - including technology that actually makes it viable for you to completely restructure your society and economy to be more environmentally friendly" but had it been done better that problem would have been less glaring.

I did like when Professor Barnhardt completely pwnd Klaatu.

* Of course, Gort was going to scour the Earth clean of everything and a planet covered in nanobots wouldn't have been terribly pleasant for the beasties in the ark, so they evidently can turn dead worlds into living ones, making the whole thing nonsense. But whatcha gon' do?

Edit: Oh also, of course, the ending means that Klaatu's message can't be actually told to most of the world and those who do hear it are going to be preoccupied with staying alive in a world of 6 billion which has suddenly had it's production capacities reduced to a lot less than 6 billion, so yeah :monster:

To be honest, the action/intrigues in this movie are too convoluted to keep track of. And since I knew all of the consequences from World's End, I stopped paying attention in the middle. I have a hard time feeling anything towards Bootstrap Bill, but I found Norrington's thread to be very interesting, where before I had kinda ignored it because I didn't recognize him as the character from the previous film.

In short: too-long, too-complicated.

3:10 to Yuma

7/10

Some scenes like when the drunk deputy gets shot are so campy it's hilarious. The repetitive use of the theme song throughout the entire movie is very powerful. Glenn Ford plays the character of Ben Wade to a tee. I didn't buy the ending at all because I really doubt that Ben Wade, a criminal, would decide to jump on a train heading towards the prison that he will most likely be rotting in for the rest of his life all for the sake of respecting how morally righteous, brave and persistent Dan Evans is.

3:10 to Yuma Remake

8/10

It's usually the originals that are better than the remakes. This was the case with the original Japanese Godzilla that was a symbolism for the atomic bombs dropping on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The original Godzilla was much better than the weird superimposed visuals and horrible dubbing in the remake i.e. American version.

In this case, I think the remake is actually better. You really can't go wrong with actors like Christian Bale (American Psycho and The Prestige) and Russell Crowe (A Beautiful Mind and Gladiator). Though I still think Glenn Ford was better as Ben Wade, Crowe gives an amazing performance as the gunslinger as well. It's a lot more action packed than the original and also a lot more cynical. The ending isn't exactly happy, but it's perhaps a bit more believable than the original's conclusion.

Cujo. You have to praise a movie which is comprised solely by rabid dog attacks. It may be badly acted and cheap but it was surprisingly tense near the end. Recommended.

Just watched Trick r' Treat. This was supposed to be a theatrical release in 2007 but disappeared and never made it to theaters. IMDB has theories as to why, but whatever. Now it's straight-to-DVD October 6th.

But it deserved to be released in theaters. It was everything I wanted it to be: campy, funny, scary, well put together, and a surprising amount of twists. The whole thing is just so goddamn weird yet so lovely. Theaters are constantly plagued by boring slasher movies where a guy with a knife kills hot blond people with no personalities. It sucks that a movie that tried to be something different isn't getting a good treatment.

Anyway, I'd go 10/10. The movie is not perfect by any means, a lot would hate it maybe, but like I said, it gave me exactly what I wanted. Can't ask for more.

I saw the remake of Fame recently, and it was actually pretty good!
My only beef with the movie is that there is too many storylines going on and not enough fleshing out of each one.
Needs less happening, and more developing.
The movie is worth it if only for the Halloween Carnival dance they have in the middle of of it.

State of Play

Really enjoyed it. I'm not a huge fan of Russell Crowe, but I thought he was really good in this film and Helen Mirren was great as always. One of the better thrillers I've seen in a while and not as predictable as an awful lot of them. I liked how the political consequences of the actions and the media backlash took a central role in the plot rather than presenting the actions of the main characters as being in a vacuum. I enjoyed it so much that I really want to watch the BBC series that it was based on now, which is supposed to be even better.

8.5/10

Before this, I went to see Surrogates at the cinema. Barely worth watching, was essentially very similar to I Robot and offered little new. Friend of mine fell asleep whereas I saw one of the major plot twists coming from the introduction. Wouldn't bother going to see it. I never felt like walking out, but I did regret missing my train by seconds and seeing this instead of District 9. 4/10

The Falculty

Plot:
A high school student discoveries a new breed of species on Earth and gives it to his Science teacher to examine. His science teacher ships it off to a university and shortly after the same student finds out that his school is being overthrown by a parasitic alien race and it's his job along with about five other students to get rid of them.

My Critique: I hadn't seen this movie since like 1999 and it's still damn funny. This movie is an hour and 45min of pure lolz.
I still crack up at the ridiculous things in this movie like when that teacher gets her head cut off and it crawls away back to her body that is still moving and the reaction of the principal and other teachers when Wood and that girl find that dead body in that closest. I also lol when I'm watching it and saying to myself how could they have not realized that that country girl was the mother alien. For one all that started when she came, two she didn't trip out when she "sniffed" the cocaine and three, when all that stuff started to happen she was the coolest of them all. Everyone else was tripping out except for her.

Maan this movie is a pretty good laid back comedy. I give it a good-hearted 7.

It just feels like child pornography even the story is about sexual awakening and what not. But it's about a 13 year old girl! Oh well.

Um, yeaaah. This was interesting to say the most...

Towelhead

5/10

I thought the scenes between the main character, Jasira and Travis played by Aaron Eckart were tough to watch. It made me feel very uncomfortable. I'm not entirely sure where this movie was going. Was it trying to depict childhood promiscuity like in Kids, or was it going some where else? I thought Peter Macdissi, who played Jasira's father, was pretty good. He made me dislike him almost as much as Jasira did. The dialogue in this film is just awkward; especially between Jasira and Thomas. Strong performances saved an otherwise odd and unclear story. Everything else in the film is too mundane to discuss imo.

I watched 30 Days of Night (xD... I have about five/six times now).
- It doesn't feel like it paces on for 30 Days, that aspect is indeed what the minds behind the film failed on.

- The atmosphere is pulled off rather well save for some illogical antics (used to take the pacing of the film events somewhere, which is understandable).

- The important vampires are all there (save for Vincente who was replaced by Marlow).

- The story has a deep focus on the events involving Eban and Stella.

- It's missing what makes the vampires special (Save for maybe a half minute where Marlow is using his nails to gather henchman, and the slight event where Arvin hints that hey, maybe these vampires are extremely smart and resourceful).

- Cunning is shown through the beautiful Zurial and, mindless (but controlled) acts of insanity are shown through the stunning Iris.

- Awkward jump cuts here and there (don't ruin the movie, but I can't help but notice them after seeing the film a lot).

- The violent nature of the ghoulish vampires (It's clear that the old Nosferatu film inspired the look) are welcome any time at my place :D!

It had a really impressive cast of voice actors: Charlize Theron, Nicholas Cage, Samuel L. Jackson, Donald Sutherland and Nathan Lane. I especially love the homage to Tezuka in the film where they had one of the scientist animated to look like his self portrait. http://www.tezukaenfrancais.com/TIE/Osamu_Tezuka_StampS.JPG

Not a good date movie and, some pretty shots aside, just not a good movie. They need to keep the art out of horror methinks 2/5.
I strongly disagree with all of that.Really? This is a good date movie for you? Colour me freaked out.

I'll stick with Let The Right One In for my art horror...

Where the Wild Things Are

Acting...7/10
CGI Animation...8/10
Plot...5/10
Soundtrack...10/10

I agree with Del Miriel that it dragged out in some parts. The boy was a great actor, but I still think having James Gandolfini as the voice of Carol was a weird casting choice. There were some things that were very subtle about the film that I liked. It may you pay attention to body language and interpret it for what it is rather than blatantly having a conversation about what the characters are feeling. The CGI animation looked amazing, but there were some parts where the Wild Things didn't move as fluently as they could have. I also thought the soundtrack was great and fit nicely with the film. All in all, enjoyable film though disturbingly violent for a kid's flick.

Overall...7.5/10

(PS> I love B films too. Troma is awesome. Toxic Avenger 4: Citizen Noxie <3 or Red Neck Zombies)

Taken (2008)

The last time I seen an action/thriller as good as this was Die Hard or Heat. It was awesome! Great acting and Liam Neeson can certainly pack a punch. Doesn't get much better, and everything you would want from a movie of it's genre. Original too...

9.5/10

A funnier review of Where the Wild Things Are (http://www.filmsinreview.com/2009/10/14/where-the-wild-things-are/)

My teacher owns the site. It actually has some really decent reviews and then reviews by this lady. xD

I recently watched Where the Wild Things Are and Paranormal Activity.

I am a Spike Jonze junkie. Hell, I've basically been free promotion for Wild Things since I saw the trailer and wouldn't shut up about it to anyone. Despite all my personal hype, I'm in love with the movie. I heard so much about a boring middle and lack of narrative but I was riveted the whole time. Maybe I'm one of those early-20's guys that just has to look at it and make cute sense of every monster and line, but whatever. It's not perfect and it's not for everyone, but it is exactly for me. I'm not even going to score it.

Paranormal Activity. What you don't see is usually the scariest! There were spans of time where nothing much happened yet I never felt like nothing was happening. Some interesting stuff going on spotted here and there. Though I still can't decide of Micah is a BAMF or just a retard. I got the 2007 ending which I think is way superior to the new theatrical ending, but either is fine enough, I guess. 4/5

The development (of a cyborg!) was engrossing, and the music I listened to on repeat all night. Loved it

Duel. I enjoyed it thoroughly. Steven Spielburg was the man back in those days.

The guy who directed Robocop also directed a movie called The Fourth Man; which coincidentally, is the basis for his other film, Basic Instinct . It's a pretty symbolic, well-acted movie with some noir undertones and perverse Biblical themes.

Up.

Probably my favorite Disney Pixar movie, if not my favorite Disney movie of all time. OF ALL TIME.

It didn't look like much in the commercials, but I was so impressed by how well they combined really adult issues into a really genuien and hilarious story.

I liked how an older man was the hero, and how it dealt with (psychology nerd :(), his struggle to find integrity at the end of his life to look back and see that he did accomplish so much. I liked that it was people in this movie too. Usually Pixar doesn't do that much for me (aside from Finding Nemo and Toy Story, a lot of the movies have been pretty good, but now WOW like Disney usually is), but I was so impressed.

I cried pretty much the whole movie, when I wasn't laughing!
