Well, I've recently started teaching myself piano, and I've learnt how to play 5 or 6 songs and to sing along with them, but when I come to learn the next one, I can't think of any I'd like to learn!:mad2:

So, can anybody recommend some songs for me? Bear in mind I've only started, but I can handle songs with a medium-ish difficulty. And I'd like some popular songs, some fast, some slow, whatever. And if you could recommend some romantic songs too, that'd be nice. Cheers!!! :)

Try some of Gary Jule's cover of Mad World. It seems pretty simple, it's very pretty.

Good for you, for learning, by the way. =O

I recommend the book "Hours by the Masters"

It's a compendium of the greatest like Mozart, Shumann, Bach, Beethoven, etc.

As the book progresses the songs get more difficult, plus you'll find out what kind of music you want to play.

Of course, if you want easy, try FF8 songs.

Yeah, there's so many good FF songs you could play :D Of course, you'd have to come up with the lyrics yourself!

Now learn the harmonica and play Piano Man...

Or learn "To Zanarkand" from FFX, it's one of my favorite songs in Final Fantasy for some reason...

I am envious. Playing the piano is one of the few skills I don't have that I really wish I did. I'd love to get lessons and a piano, but I don't see either happening any time soon.

Thanks for all the recommendations guys. Although I'm not sure about the Funeral March. It sounds kinda depressing...

Heath, I don't have a piano, really, just a keyboard, and it's not really that great. But it serves its purpose. You could always buy one on the cheap. :D

FF songs are easy enough, but only with regards to the basic melody. The left hand is a real pain in the @rse. Still, I'll keep trying.

And don't be afraid to throw in any other amount of songs you like too. :)

Chopin, motherfucker.

I DO like Chopin. I developed a taste for his music while playing Eternal Sonata. :D

If you have trouble playing with a second hand,

1. You are still a beginner, I'm afraid.
2. Chopin is waaay out of your league. :p Even with full functionality in both hands his sonates still take forever to learn.

Well, don't despair. You can now choose two roads.

The first, and slightly longer one, is that you take a beginners book and start learning how to fully use your left hand. The second is that you just start playing keyboard songs, which only use simple lefthanded things.

It's not that I can't use my left hand, or that I can't do both at once. It's easy using both hands, it's just for FF songs, I can't for the life of me make out what is being played by the left hand. If I could hear the notes or even see them, I'd have no problem in learning it.

And I'm not going near Chopin, not for a few years anyway. I know my limits. :p

Oh okay, that's good to hear.

Well, with most FF songs the left hand plays a quiet undertone. You don't have to smash the keys, but softly play the tone and interweave it. At first you can play it in the exact time as to get a feeling for it. But the good news is that seeing as almost all good FF songs were made by the same man, they all have about the same feeling.

Ah. Can you recommend an easy one to start with?

As I said, try the FF8 ones. Those are frightningly easy.

Liberi Fatali
Eyes on me
The Oath

But my favorite easy one is in FFIX: Villiage of Dali, try that one first. :)

Yes, look up Final Fantasy music scores and show off your true inner nerdiness. ^_^ Haha I remember in high school when I got bored, I downloaded Aerith's Theme and Eyes on Me and learned how to play them. Good times. :mog:

You're such a nerd.

....:shifty:

What? It's not like Aerith's theme and Eyes on me were the second and third songs I learned for myself outside of lessons. How dare you accuse me? >_>

Thanks!! I'll have a nice downloading session now in a minute. And complete my inner nerdiness. :p

AK: What was the first song? ;)

The last song I attempted was Yiruma's The River Flows in You (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOqUFqF_ZwM&eurl=http%3A%2F%2Flj%2Dtoys%2Ecom%2F%3Fjournalid%3D16729412%26moduleid%3D1%26preview%3D%26auth%5Ftok en%3Dsessionless%3A1251842400%3Aembedcontent%3A16729412%25261%2526%3Ac43946&feature=player_embedded). Really beautiful, sad song <3

Pretty easy too, but it may not be for someone that's just starting, I dunno. :3

Believe it or not, but it was Fur Elise, from Beethoven. And even more weird, I learned this before any other song, before any lessons. My parents were literally driven mad from my practising.

I think it's beautiful. It doesn't have to be hard to be good. ^_^

The last song I learned was hmm.. well, I learned Comptine d'un autre été: l'après midi (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZJDNSp1QJA) and Canon in D-minor, by pachelbel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABBzejbplVQ) at the same time.

That's neat, AK. Comptine d'un autre été: l'après midi is actually my favorite piano piece of all time. It's a real tear-jerker for me.

I have a plotted agenda of pushing the piano on my children at a young age, so that they can play this song for me all of the time when they're older.

I don't mind playing it for you in vegas meetup next year. x)

Well as most everyone already said, you could always learn how to play music from your favorite video games. Nobuo Uematsu has this cool thing called Piano Collections where the Final Fantasy songs that may have been made on like...a PSX's sound chip or MIDI, are played on the piano. Some of the songs are really complex though. (Eternal Harvest alone from FFIX is like a sixteen page packet.)

I know someone's probably already said all of that, but I mainly came here for this:

Sagensyg plays piano he loves it

Not funny! :colbert:

Hmm.

I reckon you should start off with some of the Childrens collections by someone like Debussy, Chopin, Bach or even Mozart. They might be aimed at children, but they're beautiful pieces and nowhere near as hard as some later Debussy (which is MENTAL hard).

Work your way up to Rachmaninov - he's an absolute genius. :)
