Mononoke Hime is not only one of my favorite Miyazaki films but its actually my favorite film of all time and the film that inspired me to be a writer in the first place. Its just fantastic in everything really, a moral message, an ambiguous answer, excellent action, great characters wonderful music and drop dead gorgeous animation.... *raves for a few more hours about how great the movie is*

It's great, but I liked Spirited Away (and Ponyo, which I just saw today) more.

The heavy environmental message is great, and the animation is nigh peerless. Used to think the story was a little weak but after repeated viewings, it's held up well enough.

It looks stunning, and it has some very strong characters in the likes of Lady Eboshi (most films would demonise her,but Miyazaki isn't interested in that approach, and the film is better for it). However as good as it is, I do slightly prefer the likes of Totoro and Spirited Away from Miyazaki's work.

I'm a huge fan of Miyazaki, but unfortunately Princess Mononoke hasn't been released here yet. Eagerly awaiting to see it, though.

Kodama/Mononoke sets unite! Take my hand, cloud_doll!
Yeah, I have the deepest admiration for this movie and the fantastic craftsmanship obviously put into it. A wonderful and engaging story, expressive and beautiful animation and exciting dramaturgy throughout makes it one of, if not my very favourite of the Miyazaki movies I've seen.

One of my favorites. And I think it was like the second anime I saw, after Kiki's Delivery Service. It's been too long since I've seen either of them though. I should go fix that.
To be honest, this movie kind of scared me.
I liked Spirited Away much more.

fave one
except for the parts with the boars i didn't like those
Man, this is my favorite Miyazaki film and thus my favorite anime film, since Miyazaki's work consists of the only anime films I actually enjoy. It's also on my Top-5-favorite-movies list with Gattaca and a few others.
It was released here in the US when I was about 4 years old, and I first saw it when I was 7. It was so inspiring to me then, and I'm still in love with it. The art direction and the music are both gorgeous. The characters are so realistic; Miyazaki didn't steer toward that good-versus-evil bull:bou::bou::bou::bou: that plagues most films dealing with morals. They're all complex.
The voice acting was phenomenal. My favorites were Danes as San, Driver as Eboshi, and Anderson as the wolf (Moro?). There's something almost sultry about Gillian Anderson's low voice - it added an extra dimension to the protective, vicious character. I must also mention Minnie Driver's laugh. It was EPIC. I'm talking about when Prince A says something like "see with eyes unclouded" and Eboshi responds "Eyes unclouded?" and then laughs. I used to rewind and watch that part over and over because I loved the jeering laugh so much.
And the Kodamas! I always pointed out their adorable rear ends when I was younger.
I haven't watched the movie since 2007. I ought to do so again, but my copy is all scratched up!

Top tier movie. I remember just about falling in love with the film when I first saw it when it got released in NA.

I didn't really care for any of the parts with human interaction, but once the action got back to the forest, things were
I think mostly I had something else entirely in mind the many years I heard this movie hyped up, and it met none of those expectations. Kinda like taking a drink of tea when you're expecting coke; either tastes fine, but when it's not what you're expecting, it's weird and almost gross xD

Mononoke Hime is my favourite Miyazaki film. Miyazki is pretty brilliant in the themes he works with in all of his films. The pre-modern Japan he has envisioned in quite interesting as well as the main struggle of man and nature. A:bou::bou::bou::bou:aka (is sexy) plays an interesting mediating role between both worlds, especially if you consider the fact that his people are not highly regarded by the majority of humans (one point of the movie Jigo mentions the fact that Imperial family had tried to wipe out all the Emishi).
Love the music too.
More is pretty awesome as is the Forest God. :D

Mononoke is my absoltely fav Ghibli film (and I've seen them ALL, except Ponyo). It's the second Ghibli I saw (Kiki as my first) and I saw it in the cinema when it came out three times. It is absolutely perfect.
Rodarian (sp?): Tales From Earthsea isn't a Miyazaki film. Well, not a Hayao Miyazaki film. It was done by his son Goro Miyazaki. It's pretty good . . . but I'm a HUGE fan of the books it is based on . . . and it could have been SO much better had Hayao done it instead. But the fault rests on the author of the books: Ursula K. LeGuin (from my hometown of Portland! I've met and spoken with her!). Hayao approached her a long, long time ago about adapting the first book . . . but she declined, not understanding that an animated film from Japan would NOT be some trite Disney crap. When she'd eventually seen Mononoke and then Spirited Away, she begged him to do Earthsea . . . but he told her he was busy with Howl's Moving Castle . . . and that he'd lost the passion over all the years to tackle her book. So Ghibli had Goro do it instead . . .

Not a huge fan of Princess Mononoke to be honest. Probably one of my least favourite Miyazaki films. Its still better than Saturday morning television, Ill give it that.

This was like one of the first anime movies I watched, and was the first anime I watched that introduced me to cartoons that weren't aimed at children. My mom rented it for me - I don't think she realized what she was giving her 10 year old, though.
Anyway, it's a good movie. I prefer Satoshi Kon as a director, though.

Oh jeez, I was the complete opposite. I was fascinated! Mind you I was used to anime being all sugary sweet like Sailor Moon and Pokemon. After I watched Mononoke, I really got into anime - I watched Akira about a year later, and Perfect Blue ... Ghost in the Shell and Kaidohmaru I remember watching when was pretty young, too ... looking back on it, all I can think is "man, those movies were totally inappropriate for my age level."
Especially Perfect Blue. I don't know what I was thinking.

I actually thought Castle of Cagliostro was his best film, though Mononoke is definately an amazing work.
Watched it for the first time yesterday night and enjoyed it. Good characters, good story, alright pacing. I'm looking forward to seeing more from Miyazaki .

I think BBC2 once showed this, Spirited Away and Totoro on consecutive days so I watched them to see what all the fuss was about. I thought it was okay and watchable, but nowhere near the great masterpiece that some people have hailed it as. The other two I named were better imho.
Also I wanted the forest to be burned down so those weird things in Rantzien and cloud_doll's sigs would be destroyed. I'm sorry but no. :colbert:

>>> Not my fav movie ever but I remember I was totally blown away the first time i watched it. (I guess is was the hype and all)..
Castle of Cagliostro was good too, but they took Lupin III for that one so is not an entirely Hayao Miyazaki original..

I actually don't think Akira was as good as most people. :P
Even though I enjoyed it, the anime itself left out far to many details and didn't explain much of anything, and that seriously took away from the enjoyment.
And someone actually agrees with me about Lupin III! WOO!

I'm not much of a fan of Akira (why are we even talking about it, it's not Ghibli). I didn't enjoy Lupin III or Castle of Cagliostro.
Castle in the Sky was okay . . . but a little too cartoony. I just can't see how his style could have changed that much from Naussiccaa to Castle in the Sky. Just a little too goofy for my tastes, but still good.
If I HAD to choose a second favorite, I guess it would be Howl's Moving Castle or Kiki's Delivery Service. I can't make up my mind.

Maybe it's not that Miyazaki's style changed from Nausicca to Castle in the Sky, but that that's one of his key features, the way he has such a wide range of films, and that he is as comfortable working with a post-apocalyptic tale like Nausicca as he is with a quietly done film like Kiki or Totoro.

Looks like I have to bump Princess Mononoke down another slot on the list of Miyazaki films I've seen. I just watched Kiki's Delivery Service (like I've wanted to for literally 10 years now), and it's by far my favorite, story and character-wise. Spirited Away has it beat in prettiness, though, in my opinion. As for music, I've grown incredibly fond of Ponyo's soundtrack.
Still, they're all wonderful.

Miyazaki's interpretation of the character is original, though. Monkey Punch and everyone else have always pegged Lupin as an incorrigible, double-crossing, hairy stealing and raping machine—whereas Miyazaki presents him as an equally savvy but kinder, gentler Robin Hood type, whose days of foolish excess are largely behind him. Hence all the debates among fans as to whether "green jacket" Lupin is better than "red jacket" Lupin.

Mononoke was the first Miyazaki film I ever saw, and I loved it. It's admirable for its rejection of genre clichés: no morally clear-cut characters, and the romantic sub-plot ends with a realistic "we've both been through a lot, and there's so much rebuilding to do, but maybe we'll see each other again some day" rather than "let's get married NOW and be happy forever". I also really like how the spirits and animals are portrayed.
Nausicaa remains my favourite Hayao Miyazaki film, though, and one of my favourite movies of all time.

I haven't seen Ponyo yet. :( But I HAVE seen Earthsea (which isn't Hayao but his son Goro). It's not half bad. It's not half good either. :/

Princess Mononoke is one of the best Ghibli films out there. The complex factions with their understandable justifications for their actions bring great nuances to the morally grey story. The characters themselves are memorable and interesting, and the plot itself never feels too preachy despite its sometimes heavy messages. The art is stunning and so lush and brutal at the same time, which helps enhance the story's turns well.
And the music! The score to Princess Mononoke is one of Joe Hisaishi's best works. The three main themes are extremely memorable, stunningly crafted in their orchestration and heart-breakingly beautiful while they also help tell the film's story in its own enchanting way. :)

>>> Come on Red Jacket Lupin is a kind guy too..:D
I saw Cagliostro too many years ago so I dont remember much of it but I bet the guy was just looking for some treasure (as always)..
Zenigata, Goemon and Co. remained pretty much the same.
