Courtney Love To Sue Activision | News @ Ultimate-Guitar.Com (http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/general_music_news/courtney_love_to_sue_activision.html)

Now, I've never been one to agree with Courtney Love on anything ever, but! To anyone who knows anything about deceased Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain is that one of his greatest fears in life was that he would become an image that could be used & abused by corporations to make money. To me his appearance in Guitar Hero 5 is his fear come true. To me Courtney Love has some nerve to agree to let his likeness be used & then turn around to try & sue Activision but I reckon this time her heart is in the right place! I mean Guitar Hero is a bit of fun but I'm beginning to agree with many musicians that it will turn children away from playing actual instruments & play the game instead. In the time it would take you to get a high score on a song in Guitar Hero on expert you probably could've learned the song on an actual guitar.

The point of trying to make here is whether you like Kurt Cobain's music or not (I'm not a particularly big Nirvana fan) no one can denied Kurt is the face of an entire genre of music & that featuring him in a Guitar Hero game, its a disrespectful use of his likeness.

I strongly disagree with this. The people with the will and desire to learn an instrument aren't going to decide not to because Guitar Hero is easier, and you you sure as hell can't teach yourself guitar in less time than it takes to learn a song on expert. Unless you're totally uncoordinated, but if you can't handle the song on expert then how will you manage with a real instrument anyway?

If the use is disrespectful then point the finger at whoever signed over the rights to use it in the game. I'm not going to fault Activision for wanting to include the likeness of celebrities dead or otherwise to sell more copies. It's not their job to defend his image. Frankly, I couldn't care less as I utterly detest Nirvana, but if there's any finger pointing to be done, point them at Courtney Love.

I find it funny though that no one seems to care that Johnny Cash is in the game though.

As I said elsewhere when this first irrupted, that's probably because Johnny Cash's estate knows Johnny Cash wouldn't give much of a :bou::bou::bou::bou: and would want people to worry about things which actually matter.

I do not believe this is disrespectful. I cannot see how it might be. I would be flattered if I had done something that people liked enough that I was still cared about 20 years after I died.

You're not everyone to be fair.

This whole situation seems a bit murky - someone must have given Activision the rights to do it after all. I like Nirvana and all, but I don't think this sort of thing is going to drag Kurt Cobain's name through the mud or anything. And Courtney Love rants at everyone.

Honestly, what does it hurt?

It's just a game that is loaded with other songs as well. Ya people have their favs on the game but it's not like a "Guitar Hero: Nirvana!" :/

Utterly ridiculous... seeing as Courtney doesn't give two :bou::bou::bou::bou:s about anything (or at least thats how I see it)

The reason this is disrespectful is that the use of Kurts Image to sell something is the very thing the man himself stood against.

Imagine if people started depicting Abraham Linclon as a man who daily roamed the streets beating the :bou::bou::bou::bou: out of black people. (Yes, I know Lincoln didn't really do it to free the slaves, but more to unite the country, but this is the best example I could come up with right now. :p)

Mind you, that is much more extreme, but this is disrespectful in the same sense that this scenario is, just much less extreme.

I don't really blame activision, I put the blame on Courtney for giving the the right in the first place.

But while this is disrespectful, I'm not exactly enraged or anything.

I can't make up my mind. Part of me says, "Smurf her for doing something that she KNEW he'd be so opposed to."

But the other part of me says, "Smurf him! He was just a weak coward who couldn't handle the difficulties life gives us."

So . . . whatever. It's totally legal. But she should have respected his wishes.
